The end of Black Mirror’s Loch Henry actually explained. The shocking episode, directed by Sam Miller, written by Charlie Brooker, and as for the names of the cast, I’m going to put next to their character names. Davis McCardle (Samuel Blenkin) and Pia (Myha'la Herrold) pass through Davis’ hometown called “Loch Henry” in order to start their documentary on a local guy protecting eggs against collectors who want to steal them. However, during their stay they embark on a new story about the events that happened in the 90s with Iain Adair (Tom Crowhurst), Dawn Challis (Beth Robb Adams) and Simon Challis (Scott Mooney), and 8 other unfortunate tourists. Sadly, after hanging out with Davis’ mom Janet McCardle (Monica Dolan), and Stuart King (Daniel Portman), they accidentally come across evidence that reveals Kenneth McCardle (Gregor Firth) and Janet McCardle helped Adair in the crimes that took place. Davis really should have stuck with his doc about the “Egg Man”.
In the analysis, explanation, commentary, reaction and all of that, I reveal the hidden Easter Eggs and episode connections that Brooker’s Black Mirror is notorious for. As well as answer the most asked questions about the episode. Like, “What happened to Pia?”, “Why?”, “What happened to the Egg Man?”, “What was up with Janet's red mask?”, “What happened to the girlfriend”, and the classic “What happened”. Also, I point out all the important hints and clues to the twist of the episode.
In order to help prove my thesis, I bring up other episodes like Joan Is Awful, Beyond the Sea, Demon 79, Smithereens, Arkangel, Hang the DJ, Black Museum, Metalhead, Nosedive, Playtest, Shut Up and Dance, San Junipero, White Bear, The Waldo Moment, The National Anthem, and Fifteen Million Merits. You know, just a couple episodes from the series. I also feature an interview with the show’s creator Charlie Brooker.

    There was a line from Davis that foreshadowed her death. Can't remember it, but it was when he first told Pia about Ader. Something about chalking up the murders to the tourist who tripped and fell in the streams. Except in Davis's case, he probably chalked up Pias death to his mother. It's not like he saw her trip and fall, and she promptly assumed Pia got away to rat her out.

    But then why would the mother kill herself? I assume Pia's body was recovered in the stream otherwise she would've been classified as missing and not dead. Had the mother actually killed her, she would've made up a lie about Pia going outside and disappearing instead of leaving the tapes and committing suicide. Also, something that bothered me is that it's kind of unrealistic that a serial killer would just leave bulletproof evidence of their murders out in their living room when (I assume) they still regularly received guest.

  • @WrathOfTheShaft

    @WrathOfTheShaft

    10 ай бұрын

    @rakijr9176 she killed herself because Pia watched the tapes and when she went looking for her she couldn't find her. I assume she assumed she got away to tell Davis what she saw, so went home and killed herself right away. I disagree, Davis said in the beginning that his mother was lonely and didn't get many guests. Also, serial killers often leave mementos and other evidence in easily found places.

  • @rakijr9176

    @rakijr9176

    10 ай бұрын

    @@WrathOfTheShaft No I mean from Davis' point of view his mother killing herself wouldn't make any sense if she truly did kill Pia. You wouldn't murder somebody to keep your crimes a secret and then kill yourself (because you would've gotten away with it). Your right on the second point. I guess I forgot that he said she didn't receive many guests.

    I thought Stuart's father is going to murder Davis at the hospital. But he warns Davis to stop this film because of "the things that he knows". He sounded like a sad old grumpy man. But in reality, he was the most relatable. He didn't want to destroy Davis's life. But in the end, his protest didn't work out. It was his gf and his friend that persuaded him to make this. Moral of the Story: Its not the plot twist. It's about how true crime destroys people's lives just like Davis. Now Davis will never become a filmmaker or get a good job. He will always have to live his life in a sad way doing ordinary stuff and making quick bucks on interviews. He will never be remembered for talent except his parents were serial killers.

    Sierra the problem is Black mirror is no longer sci-fi. It's fantasy. Werewolves and demons etc. It's just not Black mirror anymore. I don't know why this happens to Great sci-fi shows! Literally out of nowhere after a few seasons of being straight science fiction suddenly these switch to fantasy. 🙄 Can you imagine if they did this with any other genre? Can you imagine if they took a great horror series like Haunting of Hill House and then suddenly season 3 with no explanation it becomes a romantic comedy?!?? It's ridiculous! It's not even Black mirror anymore. The thing is I feel like the episodes in season weren't bad they just weren't Black mirror. If they had created a new show and said from the creators of Black mirror comes a new fantasy anthology I probably would have loved to the show. But as it is I am extremely disappointed. We're here for Sci-fi, THAT is what the whole show is about! It's about the dangers of technology, that's what the name of the show Black mirror means! It's a reference to us constantly staring into our cell phones which are a Black mirror. It's about the dangers of technology and all of them feel realistic for the most part. It feels like with technology developing as it is that these are possible futures. But suddenly this season 0-1 movie stars are werewolves, a girl finds a cursed object, true crime

    @@WhitneyDahlin While I do see where you're coming from, I don't fully agree with your take. See, the whole point of black mirror, in my opinion, is not "technology bad, man good". The first episode itself, there was no cutting-edge, science fiction type thing involved. That Waldo episode too. I think that it has always been an observation of human psychology, and how it can corrupt something that is meant to make your life easier, because that is how we are. Technological advancements, as portrayed in most of the episodes, are just a means to the end,they aren't the driving plots of the stories. It is us, our behaviour, and our corruption that is being questioned. So I actually kind of don't mind the occasional shift from science fiction to supernatural stories as much ig. Sorry for the rant :)

It would be beautiful commentary on how netflix shows like to change little aspects of these real life horrors either for shock value or story purposes

    I feel like Davis suspected his parents.. could be wrong, but a few clues are how distant he was from his mom, living away, not consoling her when she cried about his dad. Also not feeling any sadness about his dad. Also being reluctant to do a movie about the story in the first place. Also it feels unlikely he wouldn't have stumbled on any of her memorabilia throughout the years.

    The Titanic submersible accident happening so close to season 6 being released is so ironic. There is a documentary that was filmed of the accident this week, announced onn the day of this video releasing (when the people on board were meant to run out of oxygen) and is released today, the day they died for certain. It's crazy how bloodsucking media companies are but unsurprising. And the victims' morbid curiosity over the experience of dying people in an entertainment tye lense.. I can't help but draw parallels to Pia who was the most obsessed to know and got exactly what she wanted in the end, and died because of it.

    I genuinely don’t think she would’ve killed Pia until she realized Pia knew. The mom enjoyed torturing and killing, but I also think it’s something she enjoyed doing with her husband! Think about it, they liked including other people in their “kink” so doing it alone I don’t think she would’ve found much joy in. Had Pia stayed cool, I think she would’ve been fine…but I understand panicking cuz that video was WILD and it was the first time she’d been alone with his mom.

I wondered what I’d do and even being from America Id attempt to steal Janet’s car and drive it straight to the hospital to Davis. Maybe they’d rush police to the home, I mean based on Janet so quickly assuming Pia was going to out her for what she did, I’d think she’d still follow the steps she did and Pia wouldn’t HAVE to die, but it was like a nod to the factual aspect of tourists dying to natural accidents.

    Well to be fair, it was said by Stuart that they weren’t wealthy and they had a “simple” son, so it may not be a reach to think they were both drug addicts/alcoholics/or genuinely afraid for their sons safety so they became complicit. If they were elderly with a young son I’d think they wouldn’t have much of a choice but to be complicit by force or legitimately be unaware through whatever means they had available. Nice pickup on the Exit Through the Giftshop poster and the Black Museum episode connection. Exit Through the Giftshop is also a reference to a documentary about the graffiti artist Banksy. The twist being that it isn't really about Banksy and you get drawn into a whole different story. The title of that documentary is in reference to how museums funnel you through the giftshop to get to the exit.

Especially since I feel like this season Brooker is attempting to wake people up on what he believes a Black Mirror episode can be. Whereas he believes it's not just "tech is bad", but rather how we as humans act

    I think there’s something in Pia’s early comments, when she says her bf’s dead dad looked hot in uniform and then later that his mum got wet to Bergiac. Like maybe we’ve become a bit crude & insensitive as a society Also at the beginning her bf drove her the long way to admire the scenery but she fell asleep. Like we’re only interested in beautiful settings if there’s a horrific true crime hook at the centre of it.

    Exit through the gift shop is a documentary/mockumentary about Banksy, another ‘artist’ Mr. Brainwash, graffiti and the art world , and an exploration of what is real or fake and criticism of manipulation by players in the art world. Which probably foreshadows/references how the episode plays out.

    I may be way off, but I wonder if there's a connection between the BAFTA mask and the mask his mother wore. He stares at the trophy at the end, but the look in his face made me wonder if he considered putting on a mask and following in the footsteps of his parents. All else is lost for him despite "winning" the award, which wasn't really his since someone else directed it. Is he the next torturer?

    I just had a crazy revelation about the number 4. Back when I was a little child, there was a popular HongKong show that had an opening intro with a specific card to represent each character. The queen and king made sense cause they were rich people that rule over Shanghai with an iron fist. Then there is our MC with a number 4 spade. (Time to spoil 35+ year old show) I guess now I know that it represent that he was a bringer of death to those around him and his enemies. Finally in the end, himself.

  • @kitten-whisperer

    Actually the Number 4 is a reference htho tenacious D and the pick of destiny. "My door is 4" Which is symbolic of the a door being a rectangle. What word is found in the word rectangle? Angle. Kenneth wanted the proper angle for his filming of murder.

    I also thought part of the brilliance of having Pia die by accident also sort of critiques the assumptions true crime shows would make. David didn’t know/probably couldn’t know (?) that his mother didn’t kill Pia. It makes sense that he and everyone else would assume incorrectly that his mother killed her, but as an outside observer, we’re shown it was just an accident and speculation about her death lacks validity.

    I like the parallel of how both Kenneth and Pia were killed indirectly by their actions; Kenneth contacts MRSA while trying to bury his crimes, and the treacherous terrain claims Pia as a consequence of her digging up said crime. Moreover, for how much emphasis they placed on Kenneth only being a secondary "victim" of Iain Adair and people like Pia & Kate Cezar not quite taking their (supposed, in Kenneth's case) victimhood seriously, I think attitudes towards Kenneth's death might be considered foreshadowing Pia's demise. Just as Kenneth is killed by hospital-contracted MRSA rather than from the wound "Iain" inflicted, Pia ultimately dies while evading Janet, as opposed to as one of Janet's murder victims. It also occurs to me that the Scottish Highlands, breathtaking but deadly, mirror Janet in the story, who herself *appears* harmless and yet we know she is deadly. Loved this episode, and I think it is worth a re-watch. So many lines change meaning when you have the full context, like Janet initially greeting her son and his girlfriend by saying "Pretty wee thing you've captured." And then there is the part when Davis gets hard in bed with Pia despite discussing his father's death, which might suggest some hereditary darkness in Davis.

    the theory i got convinced with is that it is the same universe as demon 79 but that she got convinced into giving her soul to Gaap because it wouldn't make sense that the prince of hell needs to do an initiation thing. and also why would a demon save the world? either that or she is just hallucinating everything and killed people thinking those were sacrifices

    i was really hoping this episode would touch on the true crime stuff, especially with what happened with dahmer i think it snapped me out of some things, with some personal stuff my fam went through too the show came off as distasteful. not tryna rag on people into true crime, like i get that criminal minds weekend binge cos tbh, that's sometimes what's up, but it's only time till people start commodifying, say, a school shooting they were in or their friend's suicide or some shit Edit: i also think that the comedic effect of pia dying in the stream is like a reference to davis' comment about tourists jus dying in the wilderness through making a wrong turn or somethin, cos in the story it turns out they were killed by the parents and iain, but in pia's case it was rlly jus the river slippin her up

    i haven’t watched this video yet but what i didn’t like about this episode was how they didn’t explain why davis’ parents did this. it just doesn’t feel realistic and not telling us their motive or what led them to that point feels like leaving a blank page. you could make a plot twist by having anyone be the killers, what we need is it to actually make sense for them to be killers

  • @pegacorn13

    They were twisted sociopaths who got off on it. I think that's all you really need to know. In the end, the episode was about how their actions affected others versus focusing on the murderers backstory and motivations. I thought it was very intentional because most of the real world biopics focus primarily on the criminals and their stories versus the damage and trauma they have inflicted onto others.

    Like others have replied to say, I also believe we know their motives. They just enjoyed killing and torturing people. That's it, they were sick. For the dad, since he was a police officer, it might even be some control/power play. But hard to say since he's dead. We do however get to see the mom, and she seems rather pleased with her actions, according to the ending of the episode. Also, most real life serial killers don't have any bigger motives. They are just deranged, and either enjoy killing, or doesn't understand that what they are doing is wrong. I don't think that the episode lacked any sort of motivation or explanation for the killings.

    In Demon 79, Smart comes to power a while after being kicked from the conservative party and that future also has the robot dogs. So if there is an article saying that he is being kicked out of the party, then its actually entirely in line with that projection. It suggests that there was a third victim in demon 79 but that it just wasn't Smart (maybe the police officer)
