You need to try rice fish next season if they are available in Netherland. They can survive low temperatures so you can leave your pond outside all year long. Plants wont survive winter but they usually regenerate in spring. Cheers MJ

That sounds similar to Danube guppies, actual wild-form guppies somebody released next to an oil refinery in Slovakia. You can ask on some aquarium forum or "aquarium exchange meetup". I know there are collectors who keep such fish.

maybe rachel oleary can provide more info on her YT channel, but my understanding is that all lilly's have a hibernation period. they can be pulled out, wrapped in paper towels and set in a cold dry place then brought out again in the spring to sprout in the ponds

This pond gave me an idea for an easy guppy breeding Bucket. Been up in my room for one month now. Had 3 spawns, and a giant guppy grown out of it! Thank you for including your cat in the video. My girlfriend and I love seeing the kitty.

I've noticed it takes a season or 2 for the lily's to flower. Seems like they need quite a bit of mass first in order to flower. Save it and put it back out next year. You won't regret it.

I love this video. Great work with your pond and rehoming your fish and shrimp. I'm always amazed and tormented by your videos. I continue to struggle to get my plants to grow properly, balance my tank, and scape my tanks. I will not give up. Your tanks keep me motivated to keep learning. Tired of wasting money and watching my plants melt away. Thank you for the motivation.

Those pond plants, most of them would survive in that "bucket" over winter ;) and could be replanted in spring again ;) as it seems to be successful project, I hope, we see something similar in spring again ;)

Especially if put in a sheltered spot, a sheet of plastic placed over a bucket works well - with some ventilation under of course.

Mark, I would really appreciate it if you could share a list of all the plants you used in the big shallow on the emersed section. I absolutely love how they look and I am growing crazy for emersed tanks lately. How did you set them up? Did you use any "soil" analogue on the wood, like sphagnum moss?

Fyi-good call on not keeping the pond plants where cats can get at them, lilies are EXTREMELY toxic to cats! Whilst some other types of plants might cause vomiting, gastro & breathing issues the lily is a very very toxic, even small exposure can cause internal bleeding and death. So good call! I keep seeing people put plants such as lilies, pothos and monstera plants in their aquariums and I can't figure out if these just arnt toxic to fish the way they are to cats and dogs, or if the fish just don't disturb the roots? Usually its the plant sap thats toxic) so would seep into the water column if the roots where damaged in any way..

I have also an helvola lily in my tank (should be the same kind like yours) and it does very well. Maybe yours will grow big enough to cut in half until next year pond season starts.

Why not replace the guppies with white cloud minnows or just a goldfish or two? The plants would have struggled in winter though.. :)

I don't know whether it's possible with Endlers, but wild forms of Poecilia reticulata are often found in places where the water temperature drops to some 7 ˚C - 10 ˚C. Such was the case with Danube guppies, which lived near an oil refinery's water treatment plant in Bratislava, Slovakia. But similar to fancy goldfish, I would expect lot of dead fish if one tried to breed that trait into fancy guppies.
