Thank you for the video. Although I was born in England, I was brought up in Wrexham and have spent many happy hours visiting Llangollen. And I had a determined welsh teacher, so the pronunciation for me is easy!!

Thank you Dan, that was a very interesting video. We did the Llangollen canal some 20+ years ago, and intend to do it again once we've moved aboard our boat, but I expect it'll out of the main holiday season. I have vivid memories of reversing the hire boat on the top part of the canal, and don't really wish to have to repeat that on our own boat! I'm looking forward to more videos like this, it's good to have the background of the canals, it adds to the enjoyment of travelling along them.

What isn't generally realised, is that the Horseshoe Falls weir might be at the start of the canal, creating a head of water behind the metering station, but it isn't the first or final influence on the canal, far from it. Thomas Telford was involved in altering the depth of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) in order to send water down the Dee during times of low water levels. Also, just after the river exits Llyn Tegid, you'll find the confluence of the Afon Tryweryn. This river is mostly well known infamously because it was dammed in the 1960s forming Llyn Celyn reservoir resulting in the residents of Capel Celyn being evicted and the village drowned. It is however less well known for the fact that it flows between two mountains - Arenig Fawr and Arenig Fach. Below each summit is a natural cirque lake and these were deepened with small dams to create yet more heads of water for influencing River Dee levels in order to keep the Llangollen Canal topped up. Today, those mountain lakes feed Bala with drinking water. Llyn Celyn feeds water to Liverpool. Great vid as usual :)

First, I just want to say (tongue in cheek) our horseshoe falls are bigger than yours 😉 That church was beautiful! I really appreciate your sharing that. Your explanation about Welsh pronunciation by locale was very interesting too. Wasn't that aquaduct originally built for mining?

Interesting history. I wonder if there is some kind of a courtesy or warning that could be used upon entering the Pontcysyllte aqueduct to warn any oncoming boats: three short toots of the horn or turning on the headlight. I guess its easily dealt with if you have a companion onboard to walk to the other end and let you know via phone call to go or not go. Keep it boat worthy.

Very well researched, must be the historian in you. Our pronunciation is weird, I remember being corrected for pronouncing Shrewsbury the way that you do and being told it's Shrosebury. I'm not surprised you haven't braved the narrows, we had four of us and mobiles to get us through and it still felt like you had to take a deep breath before setting off!

Haha nothing like a bit of narrow canal to bring some 4mph tension to the countryside! Haha only posh people call it Shrosebury!

Sort Of Interesting I'm posh, who knew! I shall have to be introduced to LCS the next time I we are at court, although perhaps I'll have to work on my surname first... Barton-de-Burgh? ... de Pompsey-whimpleton... yes that's the one!

Do they still periodically drain the Pontcysyllte aqueduct? Until a few years ago (I've not been back up your way for a while) they used to drain it and word was they used to re-line it with the same material originally used to line it: flannel and lead and boiled sugar!

Dan, would you be interested to know that there is a heritage train that operates between LLangollen and Corwen? www.llangollen-railway.co.uk/ I like following your travels on Google Earth and often spot things that are interesting. The Oswestry and Llangollen areas are picturesque and inviting. The interior of the St. Silio's Church shows traditional care and artistry-- small but spectacular. Yes, more of these kinds of videos are welcome along with boaty and videos.

Dan, I found a video series that might interest you. A guy started at Oswestry and walked in as straight a line as possible (GPS, as few feet as possible deviation from the course), to the sea.The varying land use and topography across Wales was fascinating. The whole series of five videos is a hair under three hours. I highly recommend the journey. (He seemed inordinately afraid of Welsh farmers. Did he need to be?) The series kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2urm5pvnsydj8o.html If you don't trust links from strangers search for "geowizard cross an entire country in a straight line".

LOVE IT! I love your very amicable and friendly style, I greatly enjoy and love history and find it a very interesting kind of video, my favorite type of video. Maybe to give you a primer or idea for great form, check out John Rogers Channel. He does well with this format, , but you are more friendly and fun, which I find very enjoyable to be around, while he seems to be more of a tour guide, both great! Cheers my friend, and God bless

Fabulous! I suspect if you started pronouncing everything as the local dialects dictate we'd understand much less! At least I would.
