Two-factor authentication protects your account against theft, until you give up your one-time password.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) using one-time passwords (OTPs) is often seen as a cure-all against phishing, social engineering, account theft, and other cyber problems. By requiring a one-time password upon login, the service provides an additional layer of protection for user verification. The code can be generated in a special application directly on the user's device, although unfortunately few people bother to install and configure the authentication application. Therefore, sites usually send a verification code in the form of a text message, email, push notification, instant message, or even a voice call.
This code is valid for a limited time and greatly enhances security. But this isn't a silver bullet: Even with two-factor authentication, personal accounts remain vulnerable to one-time password (OTP) bots - automated programs that trick users into revealing one-time passwords through social engineering.
