This performance is better than Wei Yanwan's Kunqu Opera.

The Dowager Empress is a bada$$. I know and the Emperor knew Shu was a mole but that smooth introduction really stuck it to the Empress and Imperial Noble Consort. She made them squirm. I feel bad for Shu. She couldn't get a fair shake anywhere from anyone. She disappointed the Dowager, the Emperor never trusted her and destroyed her health with his special medicine and the rest of the harem was jealous and hated everybody. Poor thing.

in the original novel, the ice was not just normal blocks but was actually carved into shapes, and there was even commentary that it was all useless since it would all end up as meltwater anyways

I wish the novel was in English

I cannot understand why the Emperor was so inclined to overlook all the evil Empress did. Yet treated Ruyi so miserably EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS INNOCENT...AND HE KNEW SHE WAS INNOCENT!! SHE WAS IMPRISONED IN COLD PALACE FOR 3 YRS ....fighting for her life every 5mins. Then on house arrest every year it seemed from then on out!! AND HE SLAPPED HER ON 2 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. JAI AND GAU WERE 💩STIRRERS...VERY ANNOYING.

Langhua, Xiyue and Yuyan all came from big, important clans, and the emperor is too afraid the clans would be upset if he punish them. He even gave Jia the imperial noble consort title after her death to appease her clan. But Ruyi doesn't have anyone to back her. Her aunt being deposed/shunned by the previous emperor already gave a bad image to her clan, and even though her father was a somewhat important official, his death meant she no longer has anyone of importance to protect her. That's why the emperor had been treating Ruyi so unfairly while also turning a blind eye to the other women's schemes. He's a calculative, manipulative dirtbag.

Besides being from a big clan the emperor constantly praised he for being a virtuous and generous wife he if he exposed or actually opened his eyes to the empress’s evil deeds that meant he made a mistake and he’s the emperor he doesn’t make mistakes so Languha got to be the saintly empress

Indeed, it was actually painful to watch those parts for that exact reason. They were never held to account like Ruyi was and she was innocent ! He was pathetic and didn't deserve her.

He needed the support of the fuca clan being military he couldn't offend them as he's powerless without the assistance of all clans, if at best he's a puppet Emperor whose strings get pulled in whatever direction at that time.
