The Elite Defender from the 2022 NBA Draft that you Probably Forgot About

Спорт

There were very few guys from the 2022 NBA Draft as good as Mark Williams was defensively last season for the Charlotte Hornets. The 15th overall pick was one of the best Charlotte Hornets draft picks in a long time, and despite the Hornets struggling to compete, with LaMelo Ball dealing with injuries throughout the season, it was hard to ignore the bright spots that they have in Mark Williams.
Mark Williams is already a defensive monster. His counting stats aren't mind blowing, but that doesn't mean the signs aren't abundantly clear that he's not far from being one of the best defenders in the entire NBA. The Charlotte Hornets defense improved greatly once he was made a full time rotational player for them. The former Duke University big man is poised for a big second year with the Hornets.
His time at Duke was enough to get him close to the lottery in the 2022 draft, but Mark now looks like one of the biggest steals thus far, looking more and more like an elite defender.

I see him going 10 or 14 I think most of the teams in the lottery got the players they wanted but he definitely has more upside than Johnny Davis

I’ve been raving about mark wolliams since he got drafted. I think he dropped too low and that his impact is very high for the small amount of minutes he gets.

These are my favourite kind of videos on NBA KZread, especially in the offseason. Living in the UK, mixed with many early mornings, means that I miss out seeing on lots of regular season games. Naturally, the Charlotte Hornets are pretty low on my priority of teams to keep up with, so little 8 minute break down videos highlighting key characteristics of players like Williams supplies me with the stuff I miss out on with casual nba viewing. Before watching this video I couldn’t have told you anything about Williams’ game but now I have something else to keep an eye out for if I ever see a Hornets game. Great vid as always

mark willams is definitely underrated he is the perfect center for this hornets young core with him being a good lob threat in and out of the pick and roll has great touch around the rim and defensively being a good rim protector

I remember when I made my mock draft video for 2022. I said Mark Williams should be a top 10 pick and has the potential to be better than Jalen Duran and EVERYONE was like "Mark Williams isn't even on Duran's level" when it was pretty obvious they were damn near neck and neck potential wise. I'm glad people are finally starting to wake up to how good this dude could potentially be.

I believe the Hornets were 8th in defensive efficiency after they traded away Mason Plumlee and began starting Mark Williams. There are all sorts of other positive indicators that prove the defense is legit. And on offense, one thing worth noting is that he still hasn't played with LaMelo much. He and LaMelo are going to make an awesome pairing due to Mark's ability to roll to the rim and be a lob threat. He also runs the floor well in transition. Beyond that, I do think he's going to eventually have a reliable jumper. He started taking and making midrange jumpers at Duke toward the end of the year, and his FT percentage went way up in that same stretch. The touch is there.

I’ve been saying if Clifford started Mark over Mason Bumlee at the start of the season last year he could’ve made NBA All-Rookie 🤦🏻‍♂️But I can understand he had to earn his spot. But Hornet fans knew we needed a Center and when we got one you got haters saying oh a Center who can shoot 🤦🏻‍♂️ I swear people try finding way to hate.

Bro the Hornets are looking up, they have some promising players, Miles Bridges is coming back, and they just got a top 3 pick in Brandon Miller. Mark Williams should get more minutes now that Plum Dog is gone, this is probably gonna be his breakout season.

Wow another NBA content creator that is aware of the Hornets young good players and again I say I dont see how a vast majority views this roster as bad and directionless this year. I mean they drafted a 6'9" wing for fit (consensus top 3 pick in a supposed deep draft btw) what more could they do to show that they are actually building something. I find it funny that people forget that the whole point of rebuilding should be building instead of throwing random talent at a roster for a decade. Maybe im just a biased Hornets fan but it just makes sense why these last two draft picks were picked over their alleged more talented counterpart in their drafts.
