The Elephant Sanctuary | Misty's New Adventure

On June 11th, Misty ventured farther out into her habitat than ever before...and she even capped off the day with swim in our lake! This is incredible because, although Misty has always had access to this area, this is the first time we've seen her in it.Misty was captured in India when she was 1 year old and spent 40 years in the circus, either in a barn or traveling on the road. Like many captive elephants who left the wild as calves to spend their lives on exhibit or performing, she had little to no experience with freedom-of-choice or large tracts of land...until Sanctuary. Since arriving at The Elephant Sanctuary in 2004, care staff have worked to build her trust, and encouraged her exploration of the larger natural areas available to her.

Located 85 miles southwest of Nashville in Hohenwald, Tenn., The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee provides elephants retired from performance and exhibition with individualized care, the companionship of a herd, and the opportunity to live out their lives in a safe haven dedicated to their well-being. The Sanctuary also works to raise public awareness of the complex needs of elephants in captivity, and the crisis facing elephants in the wild. The Elephant Discovery Center, The Sanctuary’s educational center with exhibits focused on elephants’ role as a keystone species, is open to visitors in downtown Hohenwald. The elephants’ habitats are closed to the public.

Yes you dont fully understand how overwhelming choice is, and open land to an elephant who have never known since capture what that is... it must be very satisfying to see her take risks and venture further, and enjoy her self. It is a marvel, really.

Misty shares the habitat with Tarra, Shirley, Sissy, and Winkie. She socializes mostly with Shirley and Tarra. They elephants decide with whom they spend their time and when:)
Thats great that they don't have to worry about predators - human or animal. It allows them to relax after years of physical trauma in the circus.
I never knew elephants curled up so cute when they rest, and rub their eyes! I mean it's not surprising but very adorable.
This must be absolute ele-heaven for her! She is having a girl's day out, starting with a long walk, then a little light lunch. After lunch, since every girl likes her beauty sleep, a nap and finishing with a delightful spa treatment in her own private lake. Hey, I'd like to join her, it all sounds wonderful!
If only Misty had a special friend to go exploring with...... I hope someday she finds another special friendship like she had with sweet Dulary.
Misty is a bathing beauty! I have never seen any of the girls go into the big lake! That is so great that she's enjoying it!

What a fantastic Sanctuary. I had no idea the extent of it. To see the lovely elephants having all that space now after performing in circuses and zoos, etc. is so heartwarming. You do wonderful work there.

This video makes an excellent case for anyone wanting to keep a captive elephant in chains, behind bars, on concrete floors, etc... esp. an aging elephant who has more than paid his/her dues - performing for us. Wonderful to see these gentle thoughtful creatures enjoying themselves. Will continue to support the sanctuary!
Misty reminds me that at my old age of 65 I should venture out of my habitat too! Just returned from Rome and Capri and I know just how Misty feels doing something exciting once in a while!
I adore Misty. She's my favourite girl, though I love all the ele ladies at the sanctuary. What a darling!

I just absolutely love getting to watch the elephants, and to read what the caretakers say about how each one is doing. As I watched this video, I couldn't help but wonder if Misty was pretending that Dulary was there with her, exploring the terrain she had not yet explored, and sharing the wonderful feel of the water as it cooled her. I just can't help but wonder if all those beautiful elephants that have passed aren't still there with their friends. What a beautiful place to be. Monica W. Barnett

read comments ..and am curious about Dulary. just as I am about some of the (12?) ele's i still have yet to meet. so after seeing this once more :) i will go to the main page ..hope to learn about all ele's here now and ..in spirit. i came learning of Jenny and Shirley. so sad..about Jenny. but..got back..and fell so in love with Shirley. i know i will love them all. tho..i admit i feel a connection with Shirley..always did. but..all are my favorites!! oh..yes..want to see her wiping her eye again too! and curling up like a sweet baby!

Just curious: Seeing a lot of elephants submerging but would like to know if they can physically breathe through their mouths as well?
