In reality, he didn't actually suggest it be a turkey. If you read the original quote that caused that perception in context, you'd realize he wasn't serious when he said it and meant it as a form of mockery or absurdism in order to make a point about the Society of the Cincinnati and its members who's symbol was an eagle. It's sort of complicated because of course not a lot of people today know about them but at the time they basically fancied themselves as a sort of American aristocracy or nobility. Or at least that's what they were accused of. So when Franklin makes the turkey suggestion, he's doing so less in seriousness and more so to paint the Society of the Cincinnati as ridiculous and silly wannabe imperials. He did however make a more serious suggestion at other points in his life that the rattlesnake should or would be a fitting symbol of the nation. Still, I prefer the bald eagle.
Can we just talk about John's voice when he looks over at Thomas and said *"The EA-GLE"* Or Benjamin's sassy voice when he said "It's a truly *nobel* bird!" No? Okay...

Yes, we can
Franklin wasn't kidding when he said a turkey would stand up to a regiment. I woke up one morning to discover a giant flock of wild turkeys having breakfast in my front yard. Three were on watch and came after me when I opened my back door. I just wanted to carefully drive off to work and leave them be but they weren't having it. When they were finished, they calmly walked away and I was an hour late for work.

Glad you found it here and enjoyed it.
It makes you wonder whether the United States would have ever come into being if the founding fathers hadn't been able to carry a tune and harmonize! ;-)

Saw this in 1976 ...I was in 5th grade...You would have thought they sent us to a porn...OMG...there was swear words! LOL...like we didn't have martini swilling swearing folks at home...Loved this movie. Saw it at Heinz Hall with all the other Pittsburgh schools. I wonder what the actual rhetoric was like. I know my mom made me talk on the radio! That was also the year Bad News Bears came out...or close to it...when PG actually meant something...GREAT MOVIE! Made us realize men were human!
An all time great musical! Perfect to watch a clip again on July 4th!
Franklin; The turkey is a most noble bird (ramble ramble ramble) there for the national bird of America is going to be.... Adams: The Eagle Franklin: The Eagle! (suddenly confused). :) Classic.
I freaking LOVE this movie. We sang Momma Look Sharp in high school, and that was my introduction to it, but it took 20 years before the DVD was released and I was finally able to see what the fuss was all about (already in love with the song Momma Look Sharp), and since the DVD has commentary and the full 3 hour version, I was in no way disappointed. Like I said, I freaking LOVE this movie. I watch it every 4th of July as much as Charlie Brown Christmas and I Want a Dog For Christmas Charlie Brown every December are must sees in my home, so too is this film in July.
1776 is one of my favorite musicals as much I love Hamilton this is still best movie that talks more about our founding fathers. Also the actor playing Ben Franklin was the best choice since we cast Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier and Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Heath Ledger as Joker and Harrison Ford as Han Solo/Indiana Jones and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Michael J Fox as Marty McFly. Also Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Alan Rickman as Professor Snape and Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.
If Franklin had had his way, Thanksgiving would be really awkward.

I may have suggested a Phoenix or a Hydra. A Phoenix is not afraid of death nor change as it resurrects itself with every blow done upon it. The Hydra with many heads and one body truly represents our primary motto of E Pluribus Unum - out of many, one.
Yeah but... John's a farmer AND a lawyer, so what have you got to say to that Ben?
Somehow you hope these three historcal men watch this from heaven or whatever place and have fun about it, their legacy translated this way.

This film is a genuine classic, both as a film musical and a piece of Americana. If it had been released ten years earlier, it would have been nominated for Best Picture, but the national cultural and Hollywood political climate were very different by the early 1970s, as the Vietnam War was drawing to a close and overt patriotism and nationalism went into hiding for the better part of a decade.
