I wanted to say that Berserk is one of my favorite pieces of fiction in any medium. It's always nice to hear some new thoughts on it. I think the story as a whole is amazing for several reasons that I won't discuss right now because of possibly spoiling or hinting at things that might happen. I've subscribed and I'll be following you throughout your reading. It has its critics and you'll obviously have your own opinions, but I hope you enjoy it, stick with it, and catch up with the rest of us because there's so much to talk about.

I've been quiet up to this point but screw it. I think you and a lot of other booktubers are being incredibly unfair with the way you frame Berserk's "vulgarity". Because it only ever flows one way. Sexual violence. What about all the sequences showing men and children being torn to shreds, set on fire, eaten, or tortured? All the detail that goes into their guts, brains, and vital organs flying everywhere? Why is that level of brutality not excessive or indulgent, but the other side of the coin is? Because there's no fundamental difference in showing off the most horrible things that can happen to someone in this world. More to the point, there's a sequence in one of the later arcs involving rape which profoundly affects another character, and wouldn't be nearly as effective if Miura had shied away from showing it all. Feeling uncomfortable or horrified at the level of detail is an intended consequence, not a weakness. No normal person looks at those moments and goes "Wow, so sexy. I could jerk off to this." Putting aside aesthetic value for a dark fantasy, some of this stuff works better than you'd think from a storytelling perspective. Without Wyald, for example, you don't get a frame of reference for the warped desires of Apostles or their mission statement beyond bloodlust. Which is pretty important for building a sense of dread going into the eclipse. You also don't get Guts overcoming the paralyzing terror he felt after facing Zodd. Wyald is an appropriate obstacle because it forces him to reckon with that weakness. And makes him going full doom slayer later satisfying and sensible unlike every other adaptation that cuts it out. It'd help if you made more specific criticisms like the King's unhealthy fixation mostly coming out of nowhere, or Casca having little agency in the Wyald encounter beyond affecting Guts and Griffith. Stuff that's way more reasonable than just saying the whole story has a problem with women.

Well I do agree with you for most of this Some of the ways that the women are positioned can seem a little bit like fan service. I'm not saying that was Miura's intention but it still can leave a poor taste in the mouths of some. I don't have an issue with portraying sexual violence as a way to introduce character development but the way it's drawn and written has to be careful. I do think that the written part was just fine and made total sense but the way it was drawn and the abundance of it to some could seem a little over the top if you know what I mean.

Strongly agree. You aren't supposed to like it. It's supposed to move you. The fact its so explicit, builds up that resentment to the character. Not towards the creator who depict the characters action

perfect comment. I was going to say something along the same lines. I feel like society conditions us to respond to vulgarity only in one direction, and maybe Japanese culture doesn't have that same norm. Also I think Berserk fans, myself included, have had more time to marinate on some of the riskier scenes, and have a better macro picture about how it all hyperlinks into one overarching story. Which is why we get so annoyed at the anime adaptations because they cut out 'key' scenes for plot, when in reality they are only key to us because we nerd out on how everything fits in,

As i watch your review, I remember back during the first covid19 lockdown in Malaysia, that time is the time i first watch the berserk 97 anime and bought the berserk manga due to the anime cliffhanger. I'm blown away by Miura's art and storytelling, since then i'm a berserk fan and then after a year suddenly being hit by the news that Miura sensei have pass away. Hopefully lot more people can enjoy berserk, R.I.P Miura sensei

3:02 - of course you're welcome to your own interpretation, this is an analysis I haven't heard before. For me though, I don't think Griffith knowingly self destructed. He's a man who has complete control of everyone around him and every situation he finds himself in. When Guts disobeyed him and left, it was probably the first time Griffith has ever been rejected. I think him going to see Charlotte that night was him trying to regain some sense of control - by manipulating someone he knew was already under his thumb. A brief moment of poor judgement brought on by a need to feel in control again. Very much enjoyed the video and listening to your thoughts, I think it's a shame that you're so off-put by the more graphic instances of the artwork but appreciate you sticking with the story and seeing the good parts despite that.

@@TheJackedNerd. The more explicit panels don't bother me too much on a personal level. I think how graphic they are serves to make the scenes feel more visceral and uncomfortable, like how the violence is also shown in explicit detail. However, I do think your criticism is 100% valid and I can absolutely understand why someone would feel that way. Just because it doesn't bother me, doesn't mean it shouldn't bother anyone else.

You have to understand that Griffith is literally in his lowest point when he made the sacrifice, faced with such psychological distress are you willing to say that you wouldn't do the same? What if you lost your entire physical abilities after torture which is what Griffith went through and something comes along to offer you it back at a powerful cost. Will you do it?

no, that's not a good idea, because black swordsman sets the tone of dread that is prevalent throughout golden age that is supposed to be there. the golden age was written with the black swordsman arc being first in mind. he may not have had the golden age in mind when he wrote black swordsman, but he very specifically wrote golden age around the black swordsman being first in the story. always read in the order the author intended. remember that black swordsman was written as an introduction to Guts, the World, and the Horrors in it. it's a series of questions being asked, questions that are answered by the golden age. be real weird to get through all golden age to only THEN get the introduction to Guts, the world of berserk, and the fact of demons. and then get hit with questions you already know the answers to because you've turn the first two arcs into a game of Jeopardy. the black swordsman sets up questions, that the Golden Age goes into painful detail in answering.
