I found this neat trick because I have a thing for the smooth Bristol board plate, I found a spray textured fixative. Once I get to the point where the paper won't take anymore lead (not shiny) I spray the textured fixative and let it dry. It creates a textured layer over the graphite that is again workable with slight teeth. It is more time consuming however, I have issues with toothy paper it's just a personal preference. Your video helped me out a lot as a hobbyist creature designer.

I like practicing drawing many textures such as wood, brick, smooth shiny objects, stones, water - all the outdoor nature textures, so I definitely would find a video like that very helpful and loads of fun to practice with. Regarding paper: I find it easier and more precise to refer to them by the pound weight. Most papers used in art or even crafts are labelled this way. Most also give the metric weight as well i.e. 140lb/300gsm. You just have to look carefully as some countries producing art paper might show 300gsm/140lb.

Michelle thank you so much for all your amazing videos and can honestly say that I have learned a lot from you!! Having said that I have a huge problem with Shadows and where they fall especially when drawing Houses or Buildings. Would you have by any chance have Videos on shadow placements? or where Shadows would fall at say morning or midday? or late afternoons? I know the Sun moves but which would be the most efective one or would have the most impressive? Thank you soo much Michelle. I am learing a lot from you viseos so far so good, I am soo pleased I clicked on the first video I watched and have subscribed.

I have a watercolor 90 lb Strathmore paper, it is horrible for watercolor paint. At least for me. So, I will try this as a sketching paper, or sampling color mixing. I have a nice collection of charcoal pencils I thought might work on it. I was waiting for a tutorial like this to guide me how to get the best results on first attempt on this paper, and the pencils. They are still in the package.

Your talk about burnishing makes me think that is what happened to a watercolor painting I just finished. I thought it was just a streak of charcoal pencil that wouldn't erase (I can't see a dent in the paper) but it was barely noticeable until it got a layer of watercolor paint on it (as you can imagine). Nothing helped, so instead of giving up I decided to try to work with it - I did some more shading, added a 'beauty mark' to the woman's face, etc. Many lessons learned there. Do you have any tips for how to salvage a problem painting? Ways to draw attention away from a problem area? It wasn't a professional art piece for publishing or sale (still a beginner here) so I used it as a learning tool instead of throwing it in the bin ;)

Sounds very sensible. There are sometimes ways of removing marks, a scalpel can be used to scrape the surface off depending on how thick the paper is. The main thing is not to emphasise the mark by keep going over it.

The cheapest you can get that are really good quality, in fact they punch well above their weight are White Nights by St Petersburg. Far better than many student brands like Cotman. You can get them on Amazon and at art suppliers.
