The Eastern Chipmunk - Part 2: A family summer

Chipmunks mate in early spring and can have two litters each year. The kittens do not emerge from their burrows until they have matured. Only females raise their young but don't remain close once they leave. In fact chipmunks are quite solitary at least until breeding season arrives. Summer time is used to explore new territories and food sources and perhaps meet new neighbors. Chipmunks also have many predators including raptors, pets and any carnivore larger that they are. They avoid becoming a meal by being quick and sticking close to home. Studies have shown that activities slow down in late summer as a result of higher temperatures, perhaps a second litter and dwindling food supply. This segment was produced during May thru July in southern Rhode Island.

Wonderful video of young Chipmunks. If you sit patiently several feet from the entrance they will pop up to examine you. Thirteen Striped Ground Squirrels seem to have a designated hole minder, who Mama leaves to make sure no one leaves the burrow, which results in great comic interest as babies are successively patted back down the hole by their sibling hole minder if starting to come out. No such minder for Chipmunks, they seem free to come out based upon their adventurousness.

Charming movies of the beautiful chipmunks. My heart breaks when my cat keeps catching them. Half the time I'm able to get them off the cat & release them into a brush pile, sometimes they aren't badly hurt just shaken. I pray daily for her not to catch them.
