My technique has been to break my poles before the tips wear out. Your way seems to make more sense. :-)

Haha, that's one way to do it all right. I replaced the tips at mile 700 then mile 1952 then once in 2019. I just installed the 5th set of tips on these poles!

Yep. The very first tip replacement may need several good whacks but it's still pretty easy and MUCH easier than some methods I've seen on trail.

They look brand new!

Sure will! This is the 5th set of tips on this one set of trekking poles. Crazy right? I really go through them.

This worked well on the first tip I removed, it came off on the first attempt, but the second tip wouldn't budge. After about 10 failed attempts on the second tip with no movement, I switched it up so that the tip was pointing straight down. More force this way, and it came off on the first attempt. Do it outside and you don't need to worry about any mess. Also, I removed the bottom segments from rest of each pole, which makes the process less unwieldy.

I'm glad it works for others, but it doesn't work for my poles- even when I used a hammer as well. But soaking in boiling water worked fine - I could then just pull the tip off by hand.

For anybody struggling, using a hair dryer to heat the tip first will help.

They had a vice in a back room and it worked perfectly and popped the tip off easily. Similar method.

This is a way better method than what’s on the official instructions from black diamond.

best tip I don't have time for the hot water

Take the time to find your big hefty crescent. I tried a 10-12 times with a slim 8 inch w/o luck. Came off first try with a large ten inch crescent.

Yep, the more weight the better. These are just what I had in my car.

Great video, first I’ve seen that explains this once mysterious magic that occurred in the back room at outfitters. Have you ever filed a point on your tips.

I wouldn't ever file the tip to a point since then there is so little material it would wear away quicker. Even if I could though it would be extremely difficult to do since it's made of tungsten carbide which they use to make sawblades to cut metal. You may need a diamond surfaced grinder to get it ground down. Even with these old tips the very ends are still in great shape. It's just the plastic sections behind it are worn down from abrasion with dirt. Eventually the metal tips break off the plastic. It's just better to replace the tips before that happens.

Nice tip (pun intended). I always used the boiling water but this method is easier.

Definitely uses less energy and quicker and cleaner than the boiling water way. Good pun though! I wish I used it in the video now. :(

Sometimes they use some heavy duty glue. We tried to get a friend's off and tried the boiling water trick and everything short of a heat gun and couldn't get it off. His father later used a Dremel to remove it.

The wrench method in this video didn't work on any of our 5 trekking poles (an aluminium Fizan and 4 carbon fibre Pacer Poles). What did work was removing the lowest section and placing them tip-down in a potful of water, then bringing to the boil for 5 minutes. The tips slid off easily and no tools were needed. The water needs to cover the whole of the plastic tip as it is brought to the boil.

I ended up using your method. Boiled in a pot for 7 minutes or so and the tips finally came off. I tried whacking them off but only ended scratching my poles :(

Is that Gaffer's tape on the other pole? Gaffer's tape is much better than Duct tape as it doesn't leave any sticky residue behind.

It's gorilla tape, even worse than duct tape. I have some gaffer tape but I like the water proofness of gorilla tape. Generally if I use it I won't be intending to remove it unless to replace it with some other tape.

I use gorilla tape too. Generally not letting go is way more important than worrying about residue. I can get the residue off when I need to.

Did not work for me at at. Too bad. Boiling always works and no scrape damage to your carbon poles. Kind of looked staged.
