Part 1: How the Dutch Republic arrived on the Banda islands and why it wanted to conquer the islands.
In the early 17th century, the Dutch Republic fought for her independence against the Spanish empire. At the same time, it tried to create a worldwide empire of trade itself by means of the East India Company (VOC). Crucially, it tried to gain a foothold in the lucrative trade in spices.
The Banda islands were special because they were the only source of the highly demanded (and expensive) spices nutmeg and mace. That's why the Portuguese and later the Dutch tried to secure a monopoly on the trade in those spices. That was difficult, because the Bandanese knew the value of their goods perfectly well and did not want to be told what to do by others.
However, with the arrival of the Dutch, the Bandanese soon found themselves in a violent nightmare, which ended tragically for them when Jan Pieterszoon Coen came to Banda to settle the matter for the VOC.
While the Dutch Republic itself struggled against an empire, it started to build one itself, with all concomitant violence and profit.

Coen heeft onder meer Batavia gesticht (door Jakarta te veroveren) en is van groot belang geweest voor de ontwikkeling van de VOC tot de machtige organisatie, de staat in een staat, zoals we die nu kennen. Hij was kortom een knappe bestuurder. In de nationalistische 19e eeuw werd hij, net als veel andere figuren uit de “Gouden eeuw”, op het schild gehesen om die daden. Tegenwoordig is er meer aandacht voor de manier waarop hij dit alles voor elkaar kreeg: met zwaar geweld. Maar vergis je niet: dit geluid klonk ook al in zijn eigen tijd én in de tijd dat die standbeelden werden neergezet.

Story and reality is different... Jean pieter zoon coen build his country from indonesia treasure...in banda story is not true... People in banda not much...hahaha.. He died in jakarta -indonesia and his family go back to hoorn.. His daughter die and his wife married for twice... He die with his treasure.. No one know his tomb.. But i know... Hahaha
the VOC was clearly always right. why are you suggesting that the VOC also did bad things?

Middle century?Don't you mean the Golden Age of the Netherlands? And the slave trade was more something of the WOC.

Coen, een strijder. In tijden toen de wereld nog nieteens in kaart was gebracht. Hij streed voor de voc en nederland zoals de bandanezen voor hun volk streden en die koppen snelde. Bloed vloeide in die tijden makkelijk,life was cheap.andere geest. Coen is zeker een nederlandse held ondanks de wreedheid die noodzakelijk was in de context.
