The Duke’s Cut-Up. The Upper Thames to the South Oxford Canal - Episode 64

Speeding numpties and the slowest of locks. A short trip along this short canal wasn’t devoid of incident as we narrowly escape a crash, but this charming little canal soon soothes the stresses. I’ve always been curious about this canal, and delve a little into it’s history.

    You are right; total numpty, haring along at break neck speed, causing a wash to the moored up boats, let alone catching Reverie out on a blind bend! Great scenery after the drama, though.

    I came through that lock this week the puddle now works up stream but the other one still has to be held open whilst filling the lock and it took two people to open the lower gate also to much over grown greenery over the canal making passing and viewing ahead more difficult, a fortnight before i came around the bends on the river Kennet just down from Fobnoy lock same thing lots of protruding over growth and a river cruiser came round the bend on the wrong side and i went into reverse hard loosing control and going into the bank, i hope he gets the hang of it soon before some writes off his plastic boat with ten tons of steel, nice video thanks for sharing it with us.

    Wolvercote paper rmill was owned by Oxford University and was unusual in that the paper was produced by an alcalii process (most paper is acidic) in order for important documents to last longer. A distant relative was the manager at the mill and we visited it twice before it was demolished and sold for housing. Amusing to pass by the mill arm whe we discovered boating as a hobby some years later....

    Wow thanks Henry, I love info like this. I used to live in an old paper mill which was once visited by the then Prime Minister William Pitt. In 1795 the mill was producing banknotes to flood the French economy.

    Great video, Andrew. I've had a similar experience on the GU where a boat came around the approaching blind bend on my side. The speeding muppets where oblivious to any wrong doing and despite my efforts and full reverse, I was unable to avoid an almost head-on collision. They then made off without any eye contact or even an apology. Something I'll never forget. I'm just about to go down Dukes cut in the next few days and I'm glad I watched this beforehand.

  • @talesfromtheswansneck

    @talesfromtheswansneck

    Yeah, so I believe. No excuse for rounding a bend at that speed, especially when there are boats moored on the corner. Had I been at the tiller I probably wouldn't have minded that much, but my son is fairly a inexperienced boater, which just emphasises the point that he shouldn't have been going at that speed as he doesn't know how experienced the helmsman on the other boat is.

    Love your latest video , it's amazing to think theirs no sort of compulsory training available that would have stopped that sort of moronic behaviour from other boaters they don't realise the damage a bit of speed and bad piloting does but still despite all that you handled the situation skillfully and professionally and without any highly descriptive verbal language towards the other boater which I'm not sure I would have been able to let pass

    Best thing, if possible, is to take a snap of the speeding boat (ideally getting it's name) and reporting them to the CRT if the boat is privately owned or the hire boat company if not. The CRT should be able to check them out and advise them that a complaint has been lodged against their speeding etc and letting them know what consequences could follow if they ever get reported again. With a hire boat company you might have to threaten to sue them in order for them to do anything to the hirers; a deposit or details of credit card that will be heavily activated if any complaints come in regarding speeding or bullish behaviour should sort that out. Other than that and the awful lock, a really lovely journey. Thank you.

    Firstly Jill, a happy new year to you, and pleased you enjoyed the blog. That's extremely good advise, thank you. I was aware that it's possible to contact hire companies with regard to damage. Having chatted to a guy who used to work for one of the larger companies he assured me that they would readily compensate for any damage. That said I'm sure not all hope companies would behave in the same way. But contacting the CRT is a good idea.
