The Dual Challenge: Energy and Environment | Scott Tinker | TEDxUTAustin
The world faces two important and interrelated challenges. Affordable and reliable energy for all, and
protecting the environment. The energy-environment challenge is not simple, but it is solvable if we
understand and address the complex fabric of energy security, scale of energy demand, physics of
energy density, distribution of energy resources, interconnectedness of the land, air, water and
atmosphere, and the extreme disparity in global wealth and economic health. The truth is that there are no good and bad, clean and dirty, renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. They all have benefits, and they all have challenges. Climate change is an important issue, but it is not the only environmental issue. Solar and wind are important low carbon solutions, but they are only part of the solution. We must put our best minds to the task of addressing the dual challenge, working together to better the world. Dr. Scott Tinker is a global explorer who works to bring industry, government, academia, and NGOs together to address major societal challenges in energy, the environment, and the economy. Dr. Tinker is Director of the 250-person Bureau of Economic Geology, the State Geologist of Texas, and a professor holding the Allday Endowed Chair in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Scott formed and is Chairman of the nonprofit Switch Energy Alliance (SEA), and together with Director Harry Lynch, co-produced and is featured in the award-winning energy documentary films Switch and Switch On, which have been screened in over 50 countries to more than 15 million viewers and are used on thousands of educational campuses worldwide. SEA produced Switch Classroom, used in AP Environmental Science classes nationwide. Scott is the creator and voice of Earth Date, a weekly program featured on over 425 public radio stations in all 50 United States. In his visits to some 60 countries, Scott has given nearly 1000 keynote and invited lectures. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

More people like Scott Tinker in the world, please! His approach is THE approach needed to solve massive challenges like this. It's nearly impossible to believe conversations with him can end in vitriol or division. Game on.

China produces more because we shipped 70,000 factories and millions of high paying jobs to the far east...well, WE didn't, but our elite did. That's why they produce more than they consume, and the reverse for us. Our elite stole our jobs, got rich doing it, not tell us we have to cut back because of the lies about CO2. It's not a pollutant, it doesn't affect our climate in any appreciable way, and in fact, the world is at an almost billions of years CO2 deficit.
Oh boy, I sure can't wait to remake my topsters on June 1st, 2022! I sure hope the creator of this excellent website hasn't gone absolutely mad!

Incredible album! It's my fav as well :)
Congratulations Dr. Scott Tinker for bringing this discussion with a more realistic way. It is not a simple solution. We need to do the energy transition thinking in everyone!
One of the biggest issues with us is that, we approach a problem in one angle. Renewable energy enthusiasts do that all the times. Am very happy for this presentation as it tells us how COMPLICATED the issue of ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT is.
the topster man is going insane. bladee - eversince was my no.1 for this week tho
Dr. Scott Tinker is one of my favorites to follow on climate change and what needs to be done in a responsible and realistic energy transition. I recommend that it be subtitled in many languages for greater reach.

Finally, someone with a great energy/climate message.
Insightful! Thanks Dr. Tinker.
Great message, and relevant to all.
Why did the topster dude post this
"Energy & Environment have to be addressed together or both will fail. Dual challenge is not simple but its solvable; if we act as one team and together we can better the world" - Scott Tinker A very strong and coherent message about the challenge we all are facing as humanity.
Fantastic thank you!
i wish you could still post links in yt comments because i’d just straight up post my topsters here. anyway my top three albums for this month are: “haha sound” by broadcast, “mirror might steal your charm” by the garden and “work and non work” by broadcast also

Brilliant. Common sense, fact/data based and apolitical! If China, Brazil, Russia and India who create most of the world's pollution today don't also cooperate what we do has minimal impact on climate change. We do not live in a bubble, if we were carbon neutral it would be helpful but never offset the damage they are doing. As always, it's the poor who suffer.

Where is the data that Brazil is a big pollution maker? USA and Europe are way more creators of pollution than Brazil. Don1t believe in the rain forest fires news from midia. Most are lies.

Excellent problem definition overview, rarely seen and more rarely discussed, or acted on because of the political camps and interest groups that exist for their own existence. A large, complex interconnected natural system. 1) An overwhelming factor overlooked in the presentation is the increasing human demand in the system, that numerically is increasing at an exponential rate and as economies improve, will increase with the attendant demand for goods and services (energy) spiraling upward. Could be a long formula as written, with significant human added consumption, for disaster. Decreasing the human demand factor is unlikely. A world with 2 billion people looks like real- time paradise since our the Earth system has everything and more that paradise has to offer humans, as long as golden rule leaders without greed emerge. Sustainability could become a real word, but unlikely, the selfish gene effect. 2) A second group of factors not mentioned in the presentation are the known and unknown prospects and developments in science and technological advances toward solving the problems. Science and technology breakthroughs could be critical toward success, in the near and distant terms, improving lives as they have done in the past. Say hydrogen energy becomes feasible through research and development success (ongoing). Combust hydrogen for heat energy and produce by product water. Perhaps another plentiful energy source plateau to dramatically improve things for generation(s), but what then with increasing demand? Dr. Tinker has an exceptional start on everyone. Catching up enemas is the thing.
VINCE STAPLES SELF TITLED IS ONE OF THE BEST HIP HOP ALBUMS IN THE PAST 10 YEARS
Very well informative. To add my little point of view what are we doing about CO2 already released in the atmosphere as it is well known that it won't disappear so quickly and hence will be there for years ? The 2nd point is about this race for electric cars using clean renewable energy : With the completely factual data , it is clear that this is not the way to go if we want to protect our environment : therefore what can we do to stop this race for millions of electric cars with higher pollution levels (tyres fine particles released in the atmosphere)? Scientists should provide unbiased studies with strong evidences to back up future initiatives to protect our earth's environment against another disaster...Business as usual should be ended and switch priorities to save our planet earth.. Many thanks for sharing this presentation with relevant data ...

CO2 is not a pollutant and it is not the climate control knob. We need more CO2, not less.
I’m wondering if this was required viewing at COP 2023?

The world is at peak oil extraction. Meaning we have extracted half the oil created by nature millions of years ago. Our civilization is dependent on oil. We used the easy and cheap oil. The remaining oil is increasingly expensive to access. It will get worse. Many people can feel it without understanding it. A few people know this, but they will not speak out, because they have no available ready solution to the predictment. Perhaps the solution will be to use some of the increasingly expensive last half the remaining oil. Maybe before it runs out, the white swan events like geothermal or fusion power will be created and scaleable and will come to help out the solar, wind and battery power that being deployed.

Peak oil has been predicted since the 1970's (50 years ago) and it hasn't happened yet because technological advancements allows us to find and extract more oil all the time and their is no reason to believe this will end anytime soon.

If only people stopped over consuming. Do you really need massive homes, 50 pairs of shoes, plastic finger nails, fake flowers, fresh flowers, tabloid magazines, brand new everythings. Instead of planning to consume more and more energy we must reduce our need for things!!!

What about corporations that disproportionately generate the vast majority of pollution? If I re-use everything will that get USA Steel, Berkshire Hathaway, or American Electric Power to generate less pollution? Will it get Samsung and Apple to be more green?

You are completely missing the point of this presentation and the energy challenges and obviously do not understand human nature and the desire to improves one lot in life.
The statement below the title of this video has never been conclusively proven - wouldn't that be bad science - "Climate change - United Nations Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas."

the renewables AND extreme energy efficiency is the only sustainable sollution- we waste 1/2 the energy we make- and our "toys" use up a huge amount of energy and create a huge amount of CO2 pollution - our buildings are also poorly designed- heck if we just faced the long side of the building facing south we can save 15% or its heating/cooling costs! our vehicles spoend most of the energy moving the machine and only a small % moving the human! and do a the carbon footprint of the whole process of nucleal and you'll see its not "clean" or renewable.

LOL, so many people posting here did not comprehend what the presentation was about. You are preaching nonsense and its certainly not science.
Except video! Sounds like CHINA needs to start being held accountable for their portion of CO2 emission. Wonder if CHINA IS still considered a “Developing “ nation & held to lower standards???
what
You don't really need to go to different parts of the world to see "poor" There is poor everywhere even in America and Europe. He is kind of bias and never really presented any kind of solution.

The only energy source that does not rely on fantasies to scale up or replace fossil fuels in every energy sector is high-temperature advanced nuclear fission. Canada will have the first full-scale working test reactor in 2028 and the sky is the limit from there.
