The story behind this song is really sweet and sad. It wasn't written by Ben E. King or The Drifters, but by singer-songwriter Doc Pomus. Doc had polio, and wrote this song after seeing his wife dance with everyone but him at their wedding, as he was in a wheelchair for most of the night. Sadly, I don't think there's a recording of Doc Pomus singing this song. I would have loved to hear it. Doc Pomus died in 1991. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame.

There's more to this story. Pomus loved the blues and would go to an all-black club in Harlem and sing the blues on the stage on his crutches because he couldn't walk, let alone dance. He married a Broadway show dancer named Willie Burke and at his wedding reception held in NY City he watched as everyone danced with his new wife. Broadway show people looked down on songwriters as vastly inferior to them and gave them no respect. Oddly, Pomus wrote close to 1500 tunes -- some were made famous by Elvis Presley and others. Pomus became lifelong friends with Big Joe Turner who frequented the Harlem club where he sang. Pomus had his office in the famous Brill building in Manhattan where he penned his tunes. He was in good company there with Carol King and a host of other famous songwriters. Pomus and Burke ultimately divorced some years later and he died in 1991.

One more thing: This tune was the last one sung by Ben E. King with the Drifters. It was recorded on the Atlantic label in 1960. In 1961, King left and went on his own and "Stand By Me" was his first solo hit.

Nice info. It's also worth mentioning, Doc Pomus was one of the only people who was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the basis of songwriting alone.

Waking up to your beautiful face Makes me happy that I'm not in another place. Dreaming of you and me together living happily ever after. Hand in hand, palm to palm just hold me in your arms. Look me deep in the eyes say "I love you" without a lie. Watching you smile makes life no longer a trial. Your happiness is everything to me without you, completely empty I would be. Every night before I sleep I pray to the lord, our love to keep Like a fire burning free our love is eternity.

I don't pretend to know what love is for everyone, But I can tell you what it is for me; love is knowing all about someone, and still wanting to be with them more than any other person, love is trusting them enough to tell them everything about yourself, including the things you might be ashamed of, love is feeling comfortable and safe with someone, but still getting weak knees when they walk into a room and smile at you.

This song is on Only Rock N' Roll 1960-1964. When I found out that this is how the song sounded, I thought to myself "Really? This is rock n' roll?", because I thought it was strange to hear a song like this on a CD that consists of early 60s rock!

On this day in 1961 {July 3rd} Damita Jo's "I'll Be There" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #12 and spent 9 weeks in the Top 100 chart... It was an 'answer record' to Ben E. King's "Stand By Me"... A year earlier in 1960 she charted with another 'answer record'; "I'll Save The Last Dance For You", it reached #22 and stayed for 12 weeks in the Top 100 chart... Damita Jo passed away on Christmas Day 1998 at the age of 68... May she R.I.P.

In your arms, I’m in my safe haven. With you holding me tight, I have no other craving. All I need, is that one look, that says you’re always there, just like in a fairy-tale book. I tell you everything and never with a lie. All my worldly secrets, and everything that once made me cry. Everything in my past, with you I can forget it all. I know I can trust you, to catch me if I fall. If only I could explain, how much love I have for you. Then maybe, just maybe you'd feel it too.

How do you know when your love is true and that you are not just fooling yourself? How do you know that you are not merely infatuated with each other? How do you know that this is a relationship that has lasting power? The truth is that these are only questions that can be answered with experience.

Pomus loved the blues and would frequent a joint in Harlem and sing on the stage holding his crutches(polio) and belt out the blues in front of an all-black audience. The patrons were bewildered and asked: "Who is that white boy up there on stage singing the blues?" But he was good and they warmed up to him. He made a lifelong friend with Big Joe Turner. His new bride, Willie Burke, was a broadway dancer and show people looked down at songwriters as the "lowest of the low." No respect whatsoever. However, her work faded into history while Pomus rose to incredible glory. His tunes, over 1500 of them, were sung by Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, and a host of other greats. Not bad for a short fat disabled Jewish kid from Brooklyn named Jerome Lieber...(LOL) Rest in peace Doc Pomus.

Per: www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm Former Drifter and solo star Ben E. King died Thursday (April 30th, 2015) of apparently natural causes at the age of 76. Ben was born in Henderson, North Carolina, but moved to Harlem at the age of 9. While still in high school he sang briefly with the Moonglows before joining the Five Crowns in 1957. When the manager of the already-successful Drifters decided to fire the entire group the next year in a contract dispute, he replaced them with the Five Crowns, including Ben. Ben co-wrote and sang lead on the Crown/Drifters first hit, "There Goes My Baby" (#2-1959). Ben also sang lead on "Save The Last Dance For Me" (#1-1960), "I Count The Tears" (#17-1961) and "This Magic Moment" (#16-1960), but only cut 13 songs with the group before leaving in a his own dispute for a solo career in 1960. His first session for Atco Records yielded "Spanish Harlem" (#10-1961) and "Stand By Me" (#4-1961 and again #9 when it was re-released thanks to the movie with the same name in 1986). Other hits included "Amor" (#18-1961), "Don't Play That Song" (#11-1962) and "I (Who Have Nothing" (#29-1963). While his career ebbed in the late '60s, it was revived with "Supernatural Thing" (#5) in 1975. Ben was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2009... May he R.I.P.

It may take a few bad relationships before you know how to be in a good one. Another tip is to try to use your head before you get your heart involved. If it makes sense on paper, chances are it is a good decision. It is only when you ignore the warnings that your brain is giving you that you may get into trouble.

This one of my favorite songs and groups. That said, I always wondered what the hell the guy was thinking - was he just the Uber driver? Takes his girl to a night club, sit's around watching other guys hitting on her, into the morning hours, holding her tight slow dancing, making her laugh and smile - she had to be high on the attention. Then he takes her home for a little action. I was around when they sang this, but I always hoped they never married:)

The guy who wrote the words came up with the idea at his wedding- he suffered from polio, and wasn't able to dance with his wife - who was a professional dancer. So she could dance with lots of others at their wedding, but she would be going home with her (new) husband.

Ken, a powerful awakening for me - thank you for your reply and helping me learn by simply providing the facts. I was around when the song was released, but I'm sure I ever wondered why a song was written - I alway thought you just sang it,:) But to better understand I looked it up online and read the story - I enjoyed the song before, but now it has new meaning - I researched it and found: the gentleman you spoke about was songwriter Jerome Solon Felder (June 27, 1925 - March 14, 1991), known as Doc Pomus. Semper Fi!
