The Drever: It's an awesome breed!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

At the 2018 AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin, we caught up with a Drever owner in the Meet the Breeds venue. Learn more about a breed we don't see much of here in the United States - yet.

I dont know how a drever wound up in mississippi but 15 years ago my daughter came home with a free puppy. We thought for a long time that she was beagle basset mix but her knees and front feet were exactly opposite of a basset. Her ears were too short and her color and markings could have made her a twin to the dog in the background. She passed 10 weeks ago and im devistated. She had a long wonderful life and ive had many dogs that lived to the end of their natural lifespan, but im haunted by her. She was an incredible dog in ways that would take too much time to explain here. I regret not having her dna checked to see what she really was. I have looked hard at all of the variations of hounds and im convinced she was more drever than anything and quite possibly full blooded. Why she was here in the south and why she was free and not for sale i dont understand. I need to speak to someone who can help me determine for sure and i must have another. Molly never had pups but she raised a beagle heeler mix and he is grieving terribly for her. It might help if he and i could raise one like her. She truely was a special one.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Tiffany. She sounds like what I call a "heart dog," those truly special companions that rarely come along, and are never, ever forgotten. Uncommon breeds can show up in the most unlikely places if the right owner moves into the area, you just never know. Do consider getting another, it's a rare breed that you would be helping keep vital. There is an association in America, you can look at more pictures and get information about the breed, including breeders. Find it here: dreverusa.org/

Thank you kindly she was unforgettable..she was our alpha dog among 3 others who were all rescues. One of them got out one night and a neighborhood dog beat him up pretty good..when he got better, i watched molly and one of the others teach him how to defend himself. They would take turns sparring with him, clearly trying to teach. Short ss she was, she used her butt to knock the legs out from under the taller dogs, earning her the nickname Miss BootyButt. She would also jump up and snatch the bak of a bigger dogs neck and as she fell to the ground, her weight would pull them down with her. She was fun to watch when they all started playing. No one could beat her and few could outrun those short misshapen legs. The front feet almost turned backwards like flippers. I also learned that i was not supposed to correct the other dogs when she was around, she would all but beg me to stop fussing if one of them did something wrong, but as soon as i stopped she would step up and take over. She was very deep and intuitive, all of which sounds like the type of intelligence the drever possesses. Ill gladly help preserve the breed. Thank you for your help and for your ear.🙂
