The portuguese dub was legendary. Being a direct translation from the ongoing french dub, the french tapes arrived by truck at night, the actors recorded their lines in the morning, and the show would go up live in the afternoon. By mistake, the translators interpreted Kakarot as "cachalote", meaning "sperm whale". So throughout the whole series, Vegeta would mock Goku by calling him a sperm whale.

I always viewed Goku as less of a "good person/hero for the sake of justice" and more of "I just want to have fun and I don't want bad things to happen to my friends"

This is pretty much exactly what Toriyama means. The translation is a bit off, but from especially from a Japanese perspective a Hero(tm) is traditionally selfless person who doesn't seek conflict except to help others, and thinks deeply and is conflicted about doing so. Trunks or especially post-Cell Saga Gohan are way closer to that traditional view of classic shounen heroes. This doesn't make Goku is a BAD person morally -- he's more a Fool-type character, in the literary sense, not wishing ill will on people and takes life as it comes -- but he's too innocent and not very thoughtful or proactive to the future (hence why Chichi has to boss him around) in a lot of ways. Most of his friends get he never MEANS to sound like an asshole, but he can be frustrating. Think in the way a little kid can be annoying to an adult without intending to.

Yeah he's pure hearted in that he has no ill intent towards anyone (sometimes to an extreme extent like Vegeta after their first fight on Earth) and wants to enjoy fighting but he doesn't go around helping people or using his strength for good. Just wants to eat and fight. Not a 'good guy' but not a jerk.

People talk shit about "filler" but that was genuinely one of the best episodes of Dragon Ball in it's entirety. Toriyama and his team have such a unique sense of humor, and it barely comes through at all post-King Piccolo. The Super anime in general seemed to have a lot of fun with the production despite it's problems, the idea of bringing Brian Drummond back for stupid purple goo vegeta is really cool, I'm sure he loved doing it.

The Mexican dub also has some pretty funny improvised lines. My favorite one is on the Cell Saga where Cell calls everyone "Insects" and Vegeta thinks "That bastard didn't only steal my cells but my catchphrase too!"

I think Goku can fly the nimbus because he is pure of heart as in he is fully aware of what he wants. His intentions are not mixed with any other underlying reasons except that he wants to fight and become stronger. So he has a pure heart, it’s just not one we would consider virtuous.

Was just absolutely antagonistic to Grandpa Gohan until he fell out of the basket and hit his head, causing him amnesia of his "mission" and his warrior race. i.e. Goku was never "good"; he's innately a wild child, but was raised in a loving home.

Man, I'm brazilian and the Brazilian Portuguese Dub is extremely professional and very well acted (Wendel Bezerra as goku is just the perfect match). I dare say we have some of the best voice actors in the industry. But the Portugal Portuguese version of DBZ dub was so ridiculously hilarious it's famous here in Brazil for how crazy it sounds. I didn't know it was intentional, because it just felt like a bunch of crazy dudes got together and dubbed DBZ just for shits and giggles haha

That English Dubbed Chala was something that stuck with me for years, even staying on my music playlist ever since my brother and I discovered the opening and the full version ages ago.

The two disc set of the 1995 Dragon Ball dub was one of the first dvds I bought after I got my first player. I remembered seeing it on TV as a kid and it didn't disappoint. I actually like the original series more than the ones that followed, although I enjoy them too.

@38:57, actually, they remained extremely faithful to the source materials. In the early phase of DBZ, Krillin was almost this tall and shoulder above Goku. They made him extremely tiny in the later chapters/episodes for some ungodly reasons.

Dragon Ball Big Green Dub was the funniest thing dragon ball related I had ever watched. This is an unpopular opinion, but I consider them funnier than Team Four Star Dragon Ball Dub.

In the italian dub of GT, Gohan (while infected by Baby) says that he is spiderman in order to mock Goku. roughly tanslated Goku: "I'm from earth!" Gohan: "As if, then I'm Spiderman!"

As a Portuguese man who grew up with the dub, I can assure you, it was phenomenal XD, they still made it kind of a gag dub for Dragon Ball Super which I appreciate way more now as an adult.

Actually the series ending at the Cell saga was a myth. Akira Toriyama never confirmed that. My theory is that it was made by butthurt fans that either didn’t like the Buu saga or wanted Gohan to remain the hero. But Toriyama didn’t make Gohan the hero again because Gohan doesn’t like fighting. He only does it in defense of himself and others. Cell saga/Gohan fanboys really need to get over it.

Its actually very possible. I saw all of dragon ball around 1995. How I saw it was my parents had a satellite dish that could get spanish channels. Among them was "canal cino" they show dragon ball in its entirety. I remember seeing goku taking blumas panties off and I was like 8 years old at the time. I remember they also showed dbz up until the android saga.

Something that I believe should have been in the iceberg: The South America dubs of DBZ changed the soundtracks.

I was in a skype call with Lee Tockar (voice of Frieza for Ocean's Kai dub) a few years ago and when he told me that the dub would come out at some point but for NDA reasons he couldn't say anything about complications, my inner fanboy was crying.

So that's where "Whiskers the wonder cat" came from.

Fun fact about the Portuguese dub, they changed the names of some attacks as well. The Kamehameha is called 'Onda Vital' which translates to Vital Wave. O don't remember the other attacks though. On the other hand, the brazilian dub (also in portuguese) is considered to be one of the best dubs outside of japan. The voices fit really well with the caracters and Goku's voice (Wendell Bezerra) became a full blast celebrity in the anime community. He's also famous for being the voice of Sponge Bob.

The Portuguese Dub is so good, specially when Vegeta gives his 'final attack' against Ginyu "E AGORAAAAAAAA, DESAPARECEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!" -> "And now, be gone!!!" xD

Sorta odd, not only is there a Goku's Fire Brigade/Traffic Safety, but there's also two Super Mario anime specials with the same names, and the same PSA story

Only thing Ii surprised isn't here is the Statue of Tapion in Blue Dragon. Although it's not entirely Dragon Ball related, it's still interesting to see Him using Tapion in such a way.

The thing with dragon ball evolution is that it’s outcome was solely because of company cutting the budget and knowing damn well what they were doing and did it on purpose just to make a quick buck. Hell the actor who played Goku wanted to make a good Goku performance. He study Gokus personality and his history by reading the official manga. But the company make a script that ignored the actor’s performance

Fun fact : the Blue Waters dragon ball intro's music was taken from the French dub but the lyrics were translated from French into English. So in conclusion the Blue water Dub's Dragon Ball intro is basically the French dub's intro but translated into Ingles

Being French, I'm used to the AB dub and the French dub isn't that bad, like Piccolo is named Petit Cœur (which mean little heart) but it actually makes sense, especially for French people as Piccolo doesn't mean anything in French, and the pronunciation is different but not that far from Piccolo as it is pronounced puh-tee cuh-r but it is quite weird that they went with warrior instead of saiyen. But as you can see there are no good reasons, even with that, to explain why the Portuguese dub chose to go with Big Green 💀

I didn't know that AB had an English dub. I was shocked to hear the opening because I grew up with the French version, and it made sense to me

I really enjoyed the OVA Yo, Son Goku and his friends since I'm a sub guy and the animation was cool for me, Also, I thought you'd mention this but, Toriyama has constantly changed who's his favorite character is and now its Mr.Satan.

Fun Fact, In the German Dragonball Z dub, Vegeta switched Voiceactors during Frieza Saga. The first voice actor of Vegeta also voiced Spongebob Squarepants in the german dub. So there is german KZread poop of Spongebob using Voicelines of the same Actor where he cursed as Vegeta

I love how Goku sounds like his original Funi dub voice in the Blue Waters dub.

After watching this video, my respect for Team Four Star has immensely increased!
