Marshall stayed in Wichita instead of going to a big name school is because he could make just as much money if not more there with a program he built to legitimacy . He had stated that he doesn't recruit one and dones because he doesn't like that aspect of college ball and that's who would want to go to bigger schools. In his words, in Wichita, "Basketball is King" since there is no football. There is nowhere else Gregg would have been as revered than Wichita. Private jets whenever he wanted, brining the team to billionaire's houses for team dinner, country club status everywhere in the city, you name it he had it. too bad about his ego.

My friends son, 10 years old, was overwhelmed by the number of kids at camp and was crying... Gregg noticed him (plus 200 kids at the arena) and got Bush Waumakota (7' Center) to make him feel comfortable. Same coach different pressures. Gregg was imperfect but who among us is? Pressure to succeed often changes people from whom they really are.

The loss of Bracketbuster games after conference realignment hurt the league's ability to be a multi-bid league. In the 2000's you would always have 2-4 teams from the MVC making it into the tournament. Problem is that now a days no one wants to schedule mid-majors that have a chance of beating them so solid teams from the MVC and other conferences of the same size legit have no shot when it comes to getting an at-large.

It's so very hard to find a coach that will keep you relevant after a really good one/Hall Of Famer retires or gets fired... -Kentucky: Pitino went to the NBA in 1997 and Tubby Smith won a title in 1998 with Pitino's players and then went to maybe 1 final four over 10 years when he was there before Calipari. That's not good enough for that place. -Indiana: Is considered one of the Blue Bloods, but since Bobby Knight got fired (for coaching HARD), they have been to 1 final four and have had a myriad of coaches. -North Carolina: After Dean Smith Retired in the mid 90s, they bounced several coaches and before getting Roy Williams to come back to Chapel Hill after 15 years at Kansas in 2003. -Kansas: After Phog Allen was forced to retire due to age (he was never able to coach Wilt Chamberlain in the late 50's)...after the 1957 3OT NCAA Title loss against UNC, Chamberlain went pro. Kansas ended up a sort-of "middling" program under Ted Owens from the 60s to the 70s until the 80s. There were a few final fours in there, but no National Titles. They have been lucky since the hiring Larry Brown in the early 80s to go from him to Roy Williams and now to Bill Self. -Connecticut: They won 4 National Titles, Jim Calhoun was that program and they were absolutely stellar, tearing up the recruiting trail...taking recruits from bluebloods UNC, Kentucky, Kansas...etc. They haven't been back to a final four since Kevin Ollie, Dan Hurley is now head coach. -Maryland: A premier program under Hall of Famer Gary Williams and won the 2002 National Title, knocking off Kansas and Indiana to do so. After his retirement, they were able to nab Kansas alum Mark Turgeon (mentioned in this video), they make the tournament but certainly aren't the powerhouse they once were under Gary There are many other examples...but you get my drift. :)

I remember seeing one of those "locker room look-ins" to the Winthrop locker room around 20 years ago. Just the way he talked and composed himself made me think "this guy is an asshole, who'd want to play for him?" I really liked his teams at Wichita St., and thought he was a top shelf coach, but seemed to be a little too self-assured. For reference, I used to think similar things about Frank Martin until I saw interviews with him and he's actually a really funny guy. Marshall seems humorless. I can't say I'm surprised by what was revealed about him, but disappointed because I did think the guy knows how to coach, but clearly not how to treat people.

The contract this guy got out of leaving the program is INSANE. As a Kansas native and diehard KU fan, looking at this guy and what he got, the tens of millions of dollars after all of these allegations, and then to look at the history of Kansas coaches, Self at KU and even Snider at K State, this is a joke of a deal and I wouldn't care if WSU never gets a basketball program worth mentioning again. What a waste of student dollars. A shame.

Oh, and by the way...it was Wichita State that discontinued the Kansas series after being drummed so often in the early 90s. I believe Wichita State stopped the series after a Roy Williams-led team beat them 103-53, in 1993. But I do agree, Kansas should play Wichita State.
