the DOWNFALL of expensive DESIGNER BRANDS and the RISE of QUIET LUXURY

Hello, my luxurious friends,
I want to talk about why some luxury content creators seem to think designer bags/clothes/shoes are done. I have some thoughts about why people are opting for "quiet luxury" brands. To me, quiet luxury brands are brands like Polene, Delvaux (which is both quiet and really expensive), Longchamp, etc. Or any bag/shoe/accessory from a brand that doesn't display a massive logo. This also seems to have a lot of crossover with the "old money aesthetic" that we've been seeing everywhere lately.
Hope you enjoy. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Luxury has lowered the quality and raised the price. When a group of women in NY discovered the fakes are as “real” as the authentic makes you wonder if they are produced by the same manufacturer. I like quality. I don’t care about the brand name.

Quiet luxury is not a trend 😂. It has always been around and is as old as Old Money. Its been around much longer than Logo mania because quality has been the priority to rich consumers for over a century. Logo mania is only a thing since commercialization, and more recently... Social Media. Its only that the Logo Mania consumers are just jumping on the quiet luxury category recently that they consider it a trend. Trends are for those who are still figuring out their style.

Printed canvas from LV has been around since 1888, and nothing is quiet about LV canvas. That's just a few years after LV started. It's a similar story for gucci also. The argument can be made about quiet luxury vs. loud. However, logo mania is nothing new, and neither is quiet luxury. Quiet luxury is, however, for some people a trend at the moment, and others may not care either way. As for old money, I come from a wealthy oil family going back a few hundred years of generational wealth, so I'm sure I know a thing or two about old money.

Brands like LV and Gucci aren’t really luxury They are aspirational. That’s why every young woman working in an office is toting around a Neverfull or a Bookbag. True luxury like real wealth whispers. If you know you know. But it never announces its price tag. Plastic coated canvas for over a thousand dollars or two is just one of the world’s greatest marketing scams ever. I’d much rather have some LV stock than a bag any day.

This may be unpopular opinion: Luxury is over for social media. Luxury is over because if I judge from Instagram, KZread etc, there are a lot of people who should not be spending 10K on a bag but they do because it’s the in thing and also it helps their channel or post. For those people, luxury is not a way of life. For the people who luxury is their normal way of life, luxury is not over. Luxury has and will always be around. I think a lot of new collectors are experiencing buyer’s remorse around their Birkins and Kellies and poor quality Chanel: the whole reason behind the extreme price increases is to make sure that Birkins won’t become common in the streets and devalue the brand. It’s like buying a house in the country club, the homes in there are priced for the exclusivity but some folks want to be in there for one reason or the other. This is an age old debate but I think social media has put a new face to it.

Yes, I also agree with this comment. Luxury will always be desirable and will always be here, however I’m glad it’s going down as a fad, it was becoming unhealthy for many women. This crazy trend puts pressure to keep with Joneses and gets so many in debts. Sure I love many luxury bags but I just want one and I’m not looking for a jewelry type of bag like the Classic flap. I want the LV alma BB avery usable and not needing to be babied. Just carrying it without worry and feeling like I have an almost indestructible bag. It’s also Okay if you want your first and only luxury bag to be something more jewelry ish kind of bag, bu not my deal. I want something more practical to be my first and only big designer bag. Something to truly enjoy and use.

Super thoughtful! And I agree that even though the aesthetic looks nice, calling it the “old money” look is… strange. If the idea is to appear wealthy rather than dress for your own style, I couldn’t fool new acquaintances if I spent thousands on my wardrobe but then invited them back to my home for pizza from Aldi. The best you can hope for when you buy something is that you’ll love it and enjoy it forever, it can’t change your social class or income.

Old Money is in the Old World i.e. Europe, specifically WASP. WASP is a racial and religious group so yes as a WASP it's weird to see people think it's a costume. By contrast, wearing a poncho won't make me Mexican. I think it started with sad Harry Potter adults in their 30s who didn't wanna wear school uniforms.

I think designer bags aren’t as exclusive anymore and many people buy designer for that exclusive feeling. Although we may not see many people walking around with designer bags in our everyday lives, the influence of social media has made designer items feel like fast fashion. Influencers doing weekly designer purchase hauls takes away the buzz that once came from spotting designer items and owning them. I’m personally underwhelmed by most designer bags at this point. I do not like brands enough to pay thousands of points to own anything from them.

We used to regularly see hummers and LV bags…it took until 2016 until I saw those things in mass again, this time it was just Mercedes or Tesla’s and Chanel bags.

Luxury shopping has lost all decorum. Social media and influencers have had a huge part to play in this regard. As did Covid. I went from getting invites to attend exclusive viewings in store (sent on actual cards) and catalogues, to getting emails, to having to make a booking and then stand in a queue outside the store due to changing protocols during pandemics 😂… somehow the decorum and dignity that was the norm hasn’t returned. Brands like LV and Gucci should take note of Goyard and Hermes’ approach. And even Tod’s and Burberry, they aren’t as far gone in the wrong direction. If you want me to spend $5,000 on a bag, make me feel just a tad special or I’m spending elsewhere…

I feel like luxury esp monogram has become a joke, it isn’t a good investment whe you pay thousands for something poorly made. I shouldn’t have to send. $7000 bag in 3 times for repairs, to me that’s an inconvenience- the opposite of luxury. I have focused on quiet luxury from exclusive lesser known brands and so far I have been very pleased. Of course I will always keep my Hermes and even though it’s we’ll known I think it’s the epitome of quiet luxury.

For me it was mostly the fact, that the quality is just not there for the price. The stuff, won't last, and you can get cheaper full leather bags, with great design, often made directly in Italy with better quality from off brand or small brand shops - which looks more expensive, feel more expensive and last way longer... like what is even the point of buying luxury anymore? It is literally just for the name...absolutely nothing else...and that is paradoxically... very poverty mindset.

Luxury is just that, a luxury. If you can't afford luxuries that just puts you in the same position as most of the world. And, I don't think anyone should feel bad that they can afford luxury when other people are struggling. High income people pay more than our share in taxes that goes towards social welfare to support the community. They should use the rest of their money to buy whatever makes them happy even if other people are jealous. That's all that is. It's pure jealousy for someone to not want to see others do well while they are not.

For me it’s over-saturation mixed with the huge amounts of fakes out there. I sold most of my bags that are heavily copied specifically LVT - I have kept the ones that are not copied as much. I have also bought more unique luxury bags not necessarily quiet ( I like a logo and bling) but not what we see EVERYWHERE. Luxury items used to feel special because it represented something but with the oversaturation in the market with certain things that’s no longer true. I don’t want to look like everyone else . The amount of fakes out in these streets have diluted the brands in my opinion.

I guess I don’t want to be viewed as someone who waste money or insecure. I just know a lot of people judge people who are too focused on looks or spend too much money on themselves. But where I live it’s not okay to wear too much make up either. One should do ones best to not stand out. And because most people don’t wear logos one should not either. I’ve heard many complaints about the quality of Polene. But I’ve never heard anything bad about The Row, Proenza Schouler, JW Anderson, Alexander McQueen, etc. I guess people just need to research some of these quieter brands before they buy. But yeah! I like quiet luxury but I also agree that logos aren’t going anywhere. There are people that love logos and some don’t. And some like both the quiet look and loud look depending on their outfit and/or where they’re going.

People are butthurt and looking at it from a superficial standpoint. It has everything to do with removing yourself from the branding competition to the naked eye while still being able to divulge in “luxury”. This benefits both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum as the women with less to spend can go out without being obvious and questioning of her financial priorities. All the while the wealthy can too avoid questions about their financial means. Its the same in relation to a women dressing modestly does not think she is better than the scantily clad woman (for the most part), she may just want to cover her assists or some other reason that isn’t obvious to the naked eye, but those that know, “know”! And those that “know”, know real “fashion” is about making sure to let people know that is an art first! This isn’t Wall Street or accounting.

I love your channel. I honestly think the whole topic is a waste of time. The point of fashion is to have fun and express yourself. Like who is taking this mess so seriously? Old money, new money, wearing all neutral or logo mania... like it's all just FASHION AND FUN. Wear what you want, spend what you want and if some small minded fool receives your aesthetic in such an impactful way, that is on them, not the wearer. I will keep dressing to make the folks gag and it has nothing to do with my family's/my wealth. I just do not get taking it more seriously than it needs to be

Social media has mostly influenced the popularity of these popular brands imo. I was influenced during the lockdown for sure. When Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie had their reality show 20 yrs. ago they were sporting those luxury brands but it still had exclusivity associated with it. You rarely saw people around sporting those brands and if you did most people didn’t even notice. I personally don’t like logo branded things overdone. Personally I don’t think the quality is not there as many have commented. Recently I was at the airport and saw LV, Gucci and Chanel’s everywhere. It becomes commonplace and not “quiet”. That’s the point…you buy for yourself not to show people you own such brands bc most people could care less.

Great video exploring many different perspectives on this topic. The “old money” isn’t a trend but I guess it’s a trend if people are trying hard to jump on that style but it isn’t authentic to them. Buy and wear what you enjoy. I like a variety of styles and although LV canvas is getting judged - it wasn’t tacky or trendy when Audrey Hepburn was carrying the speedy or Coco Chanel wearing the Alma. I just think if you stay in the limelight too long, you will eventually be judged and it comes full circle.

Hmm yeah I think a lot of people are still coming to terms with the fact that it isn't worth it to cheat yourself out of ever retiring all because you want to live a luxury lifestyle in your 20s. The mystique is gone from luxury because we all know so many people who have a negative net worth who own luxury items and portray a luxury lifestyle on social media so what is there to really marvel over and be impressed by? Real wealth is what you don't see.

I agree with your reflection specially on the videos of “how to look rich and old money”. I find that ridiculous. I don’t think I’ve ever clicked on any of those! Just stay true to what you enjoy, luxury items or not.

Now that people have been priced out, those who can't afford are crying about quality. Some of these large fashion houses have been making these bags using PVC and a sewing machine for decades. You can't create content if you can't afford new bags.. These are other reasons people are done with luxury, I'm just pointing out one. I agree with everything said in this video. True luxury is about quality, being bespoke, and durability.

Totally agree with your assessments. However, I will never understand people not wearing their designer goods just because they think it will be insensitive to others. Yes, there are probably specific situations where it makes sense, but it doesn’t if they have that feeling in general. The reality is that there will always be people who have and people who don’t. The mindset just gives “pick me” and “participation trophy” vibes.

The way that quiet luxury is the talked about trend is the same way that logomania was also a trend. I also think that some creators want to move away logos because they're in a position financially where they don't need to buy showy designer items because they're already established as consumers of luxury goods. Social media has also made designer items seem very common even if no one we know in real life has the item. Quiet luxury is a lot more stripped back and old money brings back a sense of exclusivity.

Luxury should IMHO mean long lasting, true high quality, beautifully made items, made from the best raw materials, by the best artisans and craft persons and sold at a price appropriate to the item and the work and care it took to create them. Slapping on a logo and an often ridiculously high price doesn't make it luxury - it makes it a huge con. Depending on a brand name's long past good reputation, doesn't equate luxury. But the problem with quiet luxury fashion? No free post sale advertising! A plain cream knit top from an expensive brand looks from afar, like any other from any shop. Everyone can look as if they've spent a fortune on their wardrobe, without actually having to do so. Quiet luxury, whilst born of classist and racist social systems, may turn out to be the great societal leveller. If all the visual class/wealth clues displayed via their wardrobes are gone, how can the 'rich' distinguish themselves from everyone else and keep the luxury fashion brands alive? When it comes to quiet fashion, the masses will go for quality over price to achieve the same 'look'. Chanel, LV, Gucci etc are synonymous with high price, low quality tat. When the luxury fashion houses appear more dishonest than the counterfeit operators, you know there's going to be trouble ahead. The fashion houses in order to survive, will be forced to up their quality game and disappoint their share holders. About time.

I don't think it is the end of luxury - if luxury brands are smart, they are going to do what Gucci did in 2009, all of them have pieces that are more understated and do not have a logo / monogram design or big logo hardware on them ... and there are also luxury designers that are by default more subtle (Zegna, Loro Piana, Alaia).
