Yeah, I think that was a setup. I would think that the Beauty Blender (and sponges like it) are too dense to allow a bug, especially all the way in the middle of the sponge. There would be some evidence on the outside of the Blender for that to happen. The only way that could possibly happen is if the bug was introduced during the Manufactuing process (which I think is possible, but Improbable).

My mother has used a natural sea sponge for her foundation since the 70s (not the same one obviously lol). Not once were there any insects or larvae or anything else in them and they have large holes. So a very dense, synthetic sponge has zero chance of harbouring insects. Bacteria , yes, but not a whole ass insect

As someone who took acting classes to learn how to be more “human,” and who puts on an act 95% of the time- yes, her acting is atrocious. That is the most non-human behavior I think I’ve seen…. As a makeup artist for film and TV, it feels SO refreshing to hear someone talking about how different it is from everyday makeup. People don’t understand that makeup for HD cameras is a whole different world with different products, techniques, and procedures.

In makeup tutorials, I’ve seen many many tutorials that always include contouring and baking. Gurl, I want my makeup simple not looking like I have to get my modelling done in Vogue. An eyeshadow, eyebrows, mascara, blush, lipstick, and a foundation would suffice for everyday makeup.

they could’ve expanded into brushes and setting sprays and things like that but foundation/concealer was the weirdest move ever. and not just that, but insisting on it still baffles me. they’ve come out with a vault this holiday season which consists of 12 beauty blenders for the price of 195 DOLLARS which is insane to me, frankly.

With so many cheaper alternatives to the beauty blender that work just as well, I wouldn't be surprised if the company didn't exist in around another five or ten years. The concept of the beauty blender will always be iconic, and the use of a domed teardrop sponge will always be in many people's makeup bags, but as I said... there are alternatives for a much cheaper price bracket. I personally have multiple sponges and kits of sponges, but none of them are Beauty Blender, yet they work just fine. They did an amazing job in revolutionising an old tool, but I don't see them bringing anything else to the table that would make them a company I buy from rather than a cheaper Superdrug sponge or the AOA ones.

i agree. beautyblender don’t officially sell where i live so basically everyone here uses other brands of sponges and tools and we’re just fine. they’re iconic but for the price, not really worth it

Honestly as a Makeup Artist,I never learned applying with a sponge,Which will dissolve the product to the sponge. And from the all cost of the product and the time clean... A brushes and good blurring foundations and powders, Are worth it !

Could you recommend an alternate brand? I feel like I’m the only person still buying beauty blenders because I’ve tried cheaper dupes but they didn’t work as well for me 😅 I’m partially sighted so I like that I can guarantee the coverage and finish will be even on days where I’m doing my makeup from muscle memory rather than sight. Would love to find a cheaper dupe!

Agreed, iconic, but doesn't have long term relevance. Now even some drugstore brands have super soft sponges that work just as well. Then there are people that prefer brushes. The business just isn't going to last unless they branch out & completely rebrand. But, the beauty blender is most definitely an icon. We alllll know who she is & we even call our other sponges "beauty blenders" 😅

@@KittyChinchilla69 I’ve been using Morphe sponges for years now. They are very bouncy and slightly denser than BB but not nearly as dense as Real Techniques . They also typically have a set on sale so you get multiple sponges in various sizes for the same price as 1 BB. Color pop sponges are very nice as well.

I have zero interest in using beauty blender when I love the paw paw sponges and they’re so much cheaper. BUT we can all appreciate that beauty blender made the sponges popular again. 😊

In short, Beauty Blender chose to try to capitalize on brand name recognition to grow rather than maintaining as a niche market leader for a single product. 2020 trouble was because people didn’t care about makeup with not being able to go anywhere and faces covered. IDGAF era.

I watch a lot of Korean makeup tutorials- because their skin always looks super gorgeous, and a majority of them use those little wedge sponges! I started using them too a couple months ago and they’ve changed my life lol.

that random airbrush foundation tip for oily skin in the middle of the video had me taking notes all of a sudden i wish there were more unconventional oily skin makeup tips like that one

Where a brand name becomes generic, it's called trademark erosion. You gave some great examples, but my favourite ones are Google and Vaseline. Looking forward to watching!

I think it’s just that she never hears that and people don’t put in effort to understand their clients, they should be reaching out to meet you where you are, not lazily waiting for you to learn everything first. It’s her job as the seller to come to the customer’s level and know what they mean even if they don’t use the correct term. If you’re a carpenter and someone refers to a screw as a nail, you should be good enough at your job to infer what they mean and not just stare at them stupidly. It’s just intellectually lazy. _You’re_ not the expert, _she_ is. I always tell clients who apologize for not knowing a technical thing that it’s not their job to know these things, it’s mine. Technically, a _color_ is the purest most intense form of the color, like RED is fire truck red. The shades of red would be less of the pure pigment, with other tones and white or black diluting the original color. So if you’re looking at dark red and you wanted another color, you’d want something yellow, green, orange, or blue (or tints/shades of blue) and another shade would be the same color, just a different intensity. I seriously doubt this was the reason for her confusion though, that she understands the distinction, it’s probably legit that the ppl who she hears talkin about it use “shade” and she has poor language skills. There’s a technical reason for the distinction in terminology and that’s fine on a professional level, but when talking to someone not in the industry you should have enough sense to know what they mean. To me, that woman just seems stupid. Not you.

Juno & Co ate them up by releasing not only makeup tools but primer, cleansing balms to take off your foundation AND skincare. Makeup takes a lot of preparation, we can't blow our entire budget on overpriced neon pink sponges. Plus theirs aren't even microfiber like Juno's so they carry bacteria like crazy. Expensive and useless, in this economy?! No thanks.

The bright side of the beauty blender foundation shades is that that was the 1st time I saw mass backlash over shade range, and after that most brands HAD to have a full shade range or they would be shamed for it. It's still not perfect but progress has been made

Reminds me of school shopping with my dad…when I told him my size was 0 he went on about how it should be free since it’s not a real size😂😂😂. I blame my mom, she didn’t want to go😂😂😂-because he complained about prices.

In the 80s we used these wedge sponges to apply our makeup. It was a new technique by the makeup ladies in the department stores. So, the only thing I am sad about is that I didn't trademark and reshape the same thing and make a fortune off someone else's creation. 😅

Let this be a warning to all of the overpriced brands out there…. I’m looking at you, Charlotte and Pat…. especially in this economy, at a certain point, people won’t OVERPAY for something when they can get something comparable for a fraction of the price. I said what I said.

I think Charlotte Tillburry products are lovely, but I am not feelin them prices BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION..I was in a wedding for one of my uppity friends in 2021, and the onsite make up artist was doing everyone's makeup.. the foundation she used on me was gorgeous and made my skin prettier than I had ever seen, and I wanted it so bad. Till I looked it up. Then I was downright pissed. Its great and looks so flawless, but there are hundreds of other products avail at a fraction of the price.. I was sad and salty as hell lol..

I’ve never bought anything from them. They were always way too expensive. Why would I want to buy a BB for $20 USD when I could get a cheaper version from another brand that does the same exact thing. I applaud them for the innovation of the product because I’ve always loved using sponges for foundation. I used the triangle sponges for YEARS. I’ll never buy a sponge for $20 bucks though. That’s insane!

Especially if you consider that you should probably replace them every 4-6 months since they are full of liquid product that can get mould, and doubly if you consider that realistically manufacturing costs is probably like 40 cents, maybe 2 dollars if it's made in the USA or something.

The Real techniques/Ecotools and the $1 AoA ones are amazing. I've never felt the need to buy a "real" one,I remember back in the day alot of the dupes were awful and hard but now the affordable ones are just as good, the wet n wild ones are good.

Yup, haven't bought the AoA one but get the eco tools or real techniques, whichever are at the store I'm at, and I love them.

When Beauty Blender came out with the winged liner stamps, those were my personal favorite beauty tool because they made it easier for me to do winged liner & I'm pretty sure she was the first to bring winged liner stamps into the beauty tools market.

I was a freelancer for BB, amazing job, and literally out of nowhere one day my higher up texted me and told me i was being laid off along with ALL THE TEXAS BB FREELANCERS. absolutely insane!!!

They are the only company where the actual makeup seems like an accessory/afterthought for the tool they made.

I don’t know if I just do it wrong but I always found the sponge ate up so much of my foundation compared to a brush. Even when I made sure the sponge was moist. I’m a brush girl forever now

for me i'm more of a cushion girl cause i'm really into kbeauty so when i first started using foundation i use the puff that came with my cushion and nowadays brands are making thicker puff that really good for aplying foundation so i never feels the need to try beauty blender sponge again cause ngl the fact that i need to wet the sponge just seems like a hassle to me

Agreed! And with constantly wetting it for the best application, I felt like it was never really clean and don’t like having to replace tools often. I’ve had brushes that I’ve cleaned and kept for almost 10 years. I got excited using the sponge when they were trendy, and do like the look it achieves, but eventually was like oh wow this is not easier lol

tbh i have always hated makeup sponges and never understood why makeup looked flawless online when sponges were used and yet i could never replicate it. then i learned that sponges do absorb a lot of product and i don’t like the dewy finish from a wet sponge. and washing a sponge was always so much work. brushes and my fingers work waaaaay better to get the seamless look i go for.

I worked at a Sephora when the foundation came out and the amount of shelf space drastically changed for beauty blender. They went from this little tiny corner on our On The Fly section to a two-bay gondola. They didn't have enough products to even fill it so it was just a half empty display. Sephora gondala's are very expensive and they are constantly needing refreshing for branding to keep things fresh. A year later the went down to just an endcap. The foundation was always going on sale for half off so it was hard to sell it when it was full price.

I think part of it's success was that initially it seemed quite difficult for other companies to dupe. I remember back in the day buying cheap dupes and they were rubbish. I still find the beauty blender is reliable however the market is now flooded with great dupes. To create a product that revolutionises a market is remarkable

I was so mad when I purchased the Jewel collection. It had a blue green beauty blender, a mini blended, and a green blender soap. I was excited because I hadn't bought an actual beauty blender in years because they cost so much, but I wanted to treat myself. The beauty blender texture was awful and laid my makeup down terribly. It left so much texture that I just stopped using it.

I figured something was off. For a moment, I honestly thought I was just a bit heartless seeing her crying, but it turns out she’s just that kind of person

So when Dragun beauty released those palettes that had egg shaped pans, I saw a photo of them and thought they were from beauty blender. I thought it was such a cute idea! Make the pans look like a beauty blender! I was really disappointed when I found out where they were from. I know gimmicks aren’t great for long term success but part of me wishes beauty blender went full egg shape with all their makeup product releases haha.

I'm using a Beauty Blender sponge for the first time. The only reason I bought it is because it was on sale. I think it's a decent sponge, but it's the best. Eco Tools make the best sponges IMO. I remember the backlash they got for their shade range. Jackie Aina did a video about the foundation and touched on the lack of shades for deep skin tones. If I remember correctly, she said the owner's excuse is that she's Latina and made the foundation with latinas in mind. That's BS because latians come in all shades, and that's erasing afrolatinas. I remember they also shaded other beauty sponge brands by claiming they were "imitating" them. Instead of trying to shade other brands and releasing makeup with an awful shade range, I wish they would have focused on creating more makeup tools. Btw, I LOVE your eyeshadow. It makes me want to incorporate blue eyeshadow in my looks.

In the 80s, IF we used something other than our fingers to apply foundation, it was the little triangle sponges. Some cream foundations, like Merle Norman (popular in malls at the time. I was obsessed), came with a kind of flat sponge that was a bit denser than the triangles. For stage, same thing, although we used brushes for contour etc.

Yes they often came all stuck together and you had to rip them apart and hope you didn't tear the sponge

I cannot do my makeup without a blender! Makeup gives me awful texture when I put it on without one. And I always call it a beauty blender, but I use a real techniques one because the real one is 20 freaking dollars. Crazy for something I change out every few months.

Honestly, the beauty blender was just a stylized version of the old school wedge sponges from the 80s to early 2000s that veteran MUAs STILL use. The wedge sponges worked just as well, and they’re much cheaper.

I honestly never noticed a difference in the finish whether I used an actual BB, a dupe, a wedge sponge, or my fingers. But I don't cake on full coverage foundation, I mix primer with tinted moisturizer. Maybe that's why.

Thank you for brightening my day! As a more mature makeup lover (53 y.o. and counting!), I was SO late to learn about Beauty Blenders. I'd used those small, triangular sponges in my teens and twenties when I was modeling, but I always felt that they wasted product and just always preferred using brushes and my fingers to apply makeup, so when the original Beauty Blender came out I thought it was just a fad. I own a small set of those egg-shaped sponges just to help blend out my makeup now (mature skin is much more challenging), but I use them minimally. And now that I can buy similar sponges very affordably in bulk on Amazon, I doubt I'll ever purchase the authentic, expensive one. As for the BB makeup brand... meh. There's so much to choose from out there, and I've yet to see anything from BB that excites me.

I agree, it’s definitely become a household name for all sponges now alike. I think they should have concentrated on different sponges, not just slightly different shapes and colours. In saying that, I really enjoy using the original Beauty Blender. I remember when the foundation came out and the shades, I agree that it wasn’t the best and not inclusive.

i agree, i also prefer the finish of branded beauty blender. the shade range just left a sour taste in my mouth

I remember from my Sephora Brand Training Video a few years ago that after they released the foundation, they were planning to expand their makeup products to a fully "do-it-yourself" customized complexion products. The little indent on the side of the foundation would turn into your mixing palette, so you could add hydrating drops, mattifying drops, highlighting drops and color correcting drops. They were ready to go crazy with it and were trying to promote this reinvention of makeup. Obviously, none of it came to fruition because the foundation was such an epic failure. There is a small part of me that wonders what could have been and admires Beauty Blender wanting to do something so ambitious. BB's biggest mistakes were the shade range and not waiting to release the entire customization line together. Note: The training video was clearly old when I first watched it, because it was the foundation's launch ad, and by the time I got to it, the foundation was deeply discounted on the shelves.

I must admit when I started playing with makeup, I’ve used my fingers...including eyeshadows to apply makeup. I’m always convinced these tools are made to spend money needlessly but only professional makeup artist use them I must admit the original is the best out of these copies Nowadays I use brush to apply foundation and dry sponge to smoothen it out Great video x

Makeup really shouldn't come with a universal rulebook. If you feel fine using your fingers no one should tell you to stop. Where's the fun and playfulness of makeup if a stranger says you have to use something you don't want to use.

I never saw the point in paying that much for a beauty sponge either, but I absolutely love their solid charcoal brush cleaner! Unlike other brush cleaners that came in a spray bottle, I love that the charcoal solid doesn't leave a big mess all over my hands or my brushes, and it's very easy to travel with. It also cleans my brushes more thoroughly than any other brush cleaner I've tried.

Omg those triangle sponges! I still use them for nail art on my social media!

I remember the hype when it first came out and it was such a phenomenon. I use an actual beauty blender more than other sponges but I do keep an off brand on hand. I also only buy beauty blenders on sale and it's the only thing I use from the brand. This was a great video. 💜

I could never get into the beauty blender thing. It was 20$ even in like 2016 for a product that really just looks impossible to sanitize. I look at it and all I can see is a bacteria colony.

For anyone in the UK, Boots do a great makeup sponge, it's just as good as Real Techniques but it's £1.50 👌🏻 They do have two kinds but I use the purple one as it has a flat edge.

Not to be rude but 3 years is too long to keep a beauty Blender also if a bug is in your sponge it is probably from your house so that’s on you, also there should be a hole where the bug dug into it.

I've used a sponge daily ever since BB came out, but I think I only bought two originals back in the day and have since used dupes. I did notice the difference but not enough to justify the price🤷🏼‍♀️ now I have a bunch in rotation so I can always use a clean one. I do loooove my sponges, love the finish and how quickly and seamlessly I can blend my base.

I started using the BeautyBlender in 2013 and it was life changing. However, I switched to using my hands for applying foundation recently and I find that I don't miss the sponge. It was great when I was learning makeup techniques, but I find that it isn't as essential now that I know way more. I was interested in some of their makeup, but I'm not wowed by anything enough to run out and purchase it. 🤷‍♀️

I was also doing my makeup foundation with my hands then the beauty blender came to the scene and it was a game changer to me. It boosted my confidence in adventuring more into the makeup world ... Now I love makeup it's art for me

Back when BB first emerged on the scene, I wanted one, but couldn’t afford it. The fact that they are still so expensive even with other, more affordable sponges that do the job just as well (or better) is proof that people will buy something based solely on the story they want to tell themselves. Edit to add: Whatever gloss/lip combo you have going on is SENDING ME. Details needed!

The only thing I've ever bought from the Beauty Blender brand is the solid charcoal cleanser in the giant size. It's one of the best cleansers for sponges and brushes I've ever used hands down and takes forever to finish.

If you have a sponge for THREE years..THROW IT AWAY. I use mine for a few months & then i toss it.

8:00 I would brag too!!! You showed the 2000’s picture from the show that she did makeup for and I was impressed by how well the makeup was done for an almost all black cast!

I used the BeautyBlender when it first came out, then started using other sponges for a few years. Recently I’ve gone back to the BeautyBlender though and I find it’s just superior. Also, I do like their foundation. Plus their setting spray is excellent and the new primer is really good too, but no one is talking about these great products

has the formula changed since release? i remember a lot of issues with pilling and textural irregularities at launch

I've tried so many sponges and have recently come back to BeautyBlender. I grab them on sale and for me it's worth it. I've use their skin tint as well and I think it was wonderful, my issue is that they didn't have very many shades and didn't really have one for me. Also, my personal take on what would have helped the brand - don't make other colors. Make pink sponges and then go after anyone else who makes that shape and that color. Then you would always know - pink teardrop = genuine.

i agree, i also like the finish on my skin of the original beauty blender but only buy them on sale. didn’t even bother trying their foundation since their lightest shade can’t be tried in any of the stores around me and i don’t believe they have a shade light enough to match me

I’ve only ever had one actual Beauty Blender. I do always use a ‘beauty blender’ now, and I’d always used brushes beforehand. I feel like the brand Beauty Blender would have done better if they’d stick with their original sponge and done more collabs, more limit edition patterns and colours, things like that.

Excellent content as usual! Its funny bc recently i opened a new beauty blender that i had in back up for a while bc I ran out of the rest of my sponges, and I was reminded of how good they were, but also, how its really not unique anymore as many other sponges are great and affordable. It was a nice throw back, but I wont be repurchasing. I have never used anything else of theirs. I would have made sense if they stuck to other makeup tools and then perhaps from there, venture into other things like makeup, imo.

I like Beauty Blender, but I've always felt the sponges are overpriced, especially considering how often they need to be replaced.

Holy heck i thought the beauty blender was a generic name?! My one purchase from Mac was a makeup sponge that absolutely hurt my soul with how expensive it was. Man, I had no idea my expensive sponge I keep losing and never use because I use my hands to blend is actually a brand thing

The triangular sponges were meant to be disposable? 😦 No wonder my skin is such a mess 😄😄

I’ve been using beauty sponges since the 80’s, before that just fingers which is my least favorite way to apply foundation. I began with those circular plastic containers which had the pie shaped wedges and they were fine. In the 2000’s I bought a Beauty Blender and really liked it but I don’t use it for application-just bouncing to get a nice finish. I would buy them on sale but they were crazy expensive so I experimented with an Amazon brand(?) and loved it. It is an eggplant color with an M on it. Now I apply the foundation with a brush and finish with a sponge. I have brand new Beauty Blenders sitting in my drawer. Of course I will use them but they aren’t my favorite anymore. My blenders last forever and I wash them after every use. I’ve never tried their foundation because the reviews were not great and I found it in TJMaxx the first year. The component looks a little awkward too.

Yessss! I can remember my mom using the lil wedge sponges back in the 80's too. I loved watching my mom do her daily makeup and hair - it was a whole process lol.

MAC in Canada sold ‘beauty blender’ in their freestanding stores for some time. Good video!

I bought my first beauty blender and was underwhelmed. RT's sponge has been a favorite for years

Al Gore Rhythm. I much prefer the Real Techniques sponge because it has a flat side that it can sit on and not roll off the table when I put it down. Recently I’ve been going back to my roots of doing makeup in the early ‘90’s and doing my foundation with my hand ( mostly with lighter coverage things like skin tints and tinted moisturiser that I’m currently enjoying.

I've only owned one actual beauty blender. Otherwise I have used a knockoff brand. The price of a beauty blender is just outrageous.

I’ve gone back to using my fingers to apply foundation. It works so much better than a sponge or a brush. If I feel I need it I’ll use a sponge or brush after to blend. Sometimes the morning is rough so I do need the tool to help. Applying my foundation goes faster and generally I’m blended better. We need to stop falling for all these tools. They aren’t needed. As far as beauty blenders, I do use the original and knock offs. I have both. I do have the first beauty blender foundation they came out with. It’s a decent foundation but nothing better than any other higher end one. I’ve heard the new foundation isn’t as good. Beauty blenders aren’t really any different than the triangle makeup sponges. So it’s not a new idea. Just the shape is a new idea. Even beauty blenders are as knock off of something else.

I've never used a Beauty Blender brand sponge, but do use a sponge on occasion. I used to LOVE the MAC thin, tear shaped sponges. When they went on clearnace years ago I bought about 5 of them! Great video, as usual.

I got the foundation on clearance at TJ Maxx a few years ago & I absolutely love it. It has matched my skin better than any other brand I’ve used. It also sits on my skin beautifully even tho it’s well beyond the time I should have thrown it out. (I check the texture & smell every time I use it, which isn’t often.) I was really disheartened to learn that their shade selection was so terrible because I could probably use a new one, but I can’t bring myself to buy from them again.

Robert, I love these type videos made by you. Because of your professionalism, you always show both the pros and cons of a product or situation. My favorite sponge is the Elf Total Face sponge. I picked up one with a zebra stripe pattern that is fun to use! I clean my sponge after every use with an activated charcoal soap, made by ELF which has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. I have a suppressed immune system, so I must be so careful, but I think this would work for others as well!!🖤🖤🖤

I’ve reverted back to the old school triangular sponges. Cheap enough to wash daily and replace every week. I like the thin straight edge under my eyes and around my lips.

I have never bought the real Beauty Blender just because it was too expensive for me. Nowadays I just use a brush to apply my foundation and for me it works much better

Never invested in a beauty blender but I’m sure they’re amazing. I only use real techniques or other cheap sponges from CVS or Amazon. I absolutely need a sponge to blend my concealer and going back over my foundation after using a brush. And then they had a terrible foundation launch? No, thank you. I’m not begging a brand to cater to me and take my money. I will stick to Juvia’s Place and Fenty Beauty. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I don’t bounce around brands. And these people are dirty using 5+ year old sponges and expecting them not to harbor bacteria and live in a dirty environment and are surprised their sponges have bugs.

I’ve tried Beauty Blender, which is great, but Real Techniques, Milani, and Sonia Kashuk also have sponges that are just as good… The Milani & Sonia Kashuk sponges also last a lot longer.

Calling her company “beauty blender” was such a bad move imo bc then she’s trapped herself in a very specific market. She could’ve called the company whatever else and sold a trademarked beauty blender product

I switch using a brush and a beauty blender. I’m not sure exactly why but I do. Since I use my foundation in small amounts as you mention a sponge isn’t really needed to sop up extra products. Great video Robert as usual. Thank you ♥️🖤

I do feel like applying with a brush gives you good coverage, but it can look streaky. So using a sponge afterwards sheers things down and gives a more even and natural look to your foundation in my experience at least !! Maybe this is all in my head but I did the same when I used a brush still 😭

Hi Robert! I have two shades (one lighter and one darker depending the season) of their foundation. I actually have used it but then I ended up using Haus Labs because the color was perfect for me. I had to mix foundations with beauty blender foundation though! I don’t necessarily mind their foundations and they’re okay, but there’s better out there!

I really like the beauty blender skin tint! It’s really easy to find your shade, thin, not drying, and really good coverage for a skin tint!

Oh! The cleansers too! The solid cleansers for my brushes are a must have
