The Doors - Break On Through HQ (1967)
recorded fall 1966 - lyrics:
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah
We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
But can you still recall
The time we cried
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Yeah!
C'mon, yeah
Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby
She get(s high)
She get(s high)
She get(s high)
She get(s high)
I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chain
Eyes that lied
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, oww!
Oh, yeah!
Made the scene
Week to week
Day to day
Hour to hour
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through
Break on through
Break on through
Break on through
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
"Break on Through (to the Other Side)" is a song by The Doors from their debut album, The Doors. It was the first single released by the band and was unsuccessful compared to later hits, reaching only #126[1] in the United States. Despite this, it remains one of the band's signature and most popular songs and became a concert staple.
The song also appears as track one on the band's debut album. Elektra Records' censors objected to the drug use implied by the line "she gets high", which is repeated in the middle section of the song (after the line "everybody loves my baby"). The original album version and all reissues until the 1990s have the word "high" deleted, with Morrison singing "she gets" four times before a final wail. Live versions and more recent, remastered releases have the full line portion restored.

While I would tend to agree with you, I just heard a song, “What I Say” by Ray Charles- that’s a clear swipe by Morrison. I’m not sure he was ever credited and/or paid for it. I’m still looking for any verification of it. But it’s def the same song.

This is, and always will be the best version of Break On Through, the way Jim sings the lyric "Break On Through to the Other Side" is a lot different than any other version of this song. I'm 61 and what memories this triggers. I grew up in So California during the 60s and 70s and my parents would drive from Orange county to Sacramento 4 or 5 times a year to visit relatives and we would drive hwy 1 all the way down the coast with my dad blasting the Doors, Creedence, Rolling Stones, Beatles and more. They would smoke these funny looking cigarettes that smelled like dirty socks
It's just a honor to be a fan of the doors for over twenty years ago when I was in the 10th grade in high school and I still listen to them every day and every night too

It so happened that sometime in mid-July of 1965, college acquaintances Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, met up on Venice Beach. They retreated to the shade underneath Venice Pier, and sketched out the lyrics to "Moonlight Drive" in the sand, saying "We'll be rock stars!". It so happened that 11-year old me was fishing out on the end of Venice Pier every single day in the summer of 1965, so I was there!

My grandmother asked what to present me to my 16th birthday. Most of all I wanted "the Doors" musical cd. Now it is behind me and I am 44 now. When I was young I've spent endless nights in tears with his songs, knew them by heart, loved him, also Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin. Now I have rather tough times, at least need to "break on through". Is you feel sad, lonely or have problems, no matter man or woman, write to me if you'd like to, I'll be glad to hear your story. Maybe it could come better.
