    I am scared. I start next week. I told my friends and family about my new career. Unfortunately, all they had to say was the cons. I have accepted my challenges but that is exactly why I am passionate about this. I know these beautiful souls deserve all the respect and praise they deserve. I am tired of people belittling them. They deserve to be treated like anyone else.

    Exactly why I do this too, so I get hurt from time to time but it is ok, I know the kiddos don't actually mean to hurt me. If it is hard sometimes for adults to process their feelings and use coping mechanism, why can't they accept that it's is tremendously harder for this kids? Our job is to give them a chance at a somewhat normal life, and successful adulthood. Thank you for what you do, and your words 🥰

    You are quite likable. I thank you, as an autistic person, for your compassion and dedication to building bridges of understanding and inclusion for all in our human family. I enjoyed this video, learned from it, and wish you success. To that end, I want to show my love with constructive guidance. The last two items, one a "don't" and one a "do" could seem to directly contradict each other. The "don't" says "Don't give up." while the "do" that follows immediately afterward is "Quit". I certainly know the difference, but some may not. What you can do is emphasize the difference by making the "don't" be "Don't resign in frustration." and then say "Make the decision to move on only after careful consideration and planning a smooth transition." Advise your viewer that it is almost always a mistake to throw your hands up and say "That's IT! I QUIT!" in the midst of a frustration situation. Conversely, it is always a good idea to know when any job is not right for you and you are better off planning your next career move. Like you said earlier, if you get frustrated, you can cry it out in your car, but for both the sake of your clients and yourself, you need to be honest with yourself as to whether or not this job is right for you at this time. It may be time for you to move up in this field, or leave it for something else entirely, but that question should be answered as a result of calm, thoughtful research and reflection, not "the heat of the moment". Resolve ethically that you will remain dedicated to whatever work you have committed to until you are prepared to make a smooth transition for yourself and clients. If you are feeling increased or sustained frustration situations, let that motivate you to do that calm research and reflection when your are not on the job. Remember, though, that frustration is a secret tool in learning. The physiological sensations and neurological structural changes associated with frustration are identical to learning. What does this tell us? It tells us that when you feel frustration, it is a sign that your brain structure is changing, which means you are actually on the threshold of epiphany. Use frustration as a tool to have a breakthrough instead of a breakdown. Research has proven that when you feel frustrated, the method used to "settle your emotions" is identical to the best method for reaching the epiphany your frustration is heralding. Take a break. Call a "time out". Withdraw momentarily from the situation (when safe) and take slow, deep breaths (three to four) and attempt to clear your mind. What this does is help to remove whatever your previous thoughts were that prevented you from clearly seeing the new thoughts which are emerging. It is the clash between your former worldview and the new way of thinking which bring on the feeling known as "frustration". Once you realize that your own thoughts are bringing you a path forward, not an enemy attacking from without, you can relax and let the new thoughts in. Trust that your frustration is a kind of "birthing pain" for a new way of looking at something. Welcome that "baby" in peace and loving acceptance. Of course, it might also be false labor, in which case, at least you're calm and can get back to work. This information is given to you freely and can help you as well as your clients.

    Your words at the end really helped. Not too long ago I got to have my first direct hours with a client who HATED that I wasn’t their preferred tech. As soon as I got them safely to their parent’s car and made my way back to the clinic, I won’t lie, I cried. I thought I was worthless as an RBT, even with my coworkers saying I did decently for my first time. This job isn’t like my previous customer service jobs, where I could just dismiss a difficult customer and not think about them ever again. I will be seeing these clients often. I think I’ll grow from this experience, but it’s a long road ahead 😂. Everyone be easy on yourselves! This job is humbling, and some clients are just prone to lashing out. As long as you’re keeping everything legal and doing your best, you’re doing fine.

    This is a good video for RBT training. The RBT training is unusual. My LBA came in after I had trained for 1 month and purposefully aggravated one of the clients into a tantrum. I was coached for making her run the extinction procedure. As a career switcher with 9 years of management/leadership experience and a master's degree, that made no sense to me (even still). I was ready to "speak out." She was, however, polite about advising me to stick it out and get the RBT certification and transfer to a different location if her team is not a good fit. Thanks for the video!

    Edit: Came back to the video or videos and wanted to edit my comment. Never got the cert for RBT, company I was signing up for had a bad habit of not supporting staff. That's a No Bueno for me lol. Wanted to stress the importance of HIPAA. Don't think the online training really stressed this enough imo. Working as a PCA, or low hanging fruit I like to call the position. It's very very easy to get a HIPAA violation by talking to much and to the wrong people. When it comes to jobs like Nursing, Doctors or mental health, you don't want to be caught talking with coworkers "by the watercooler" about someone you were just with. Than have that "trusted" coworker go off and drop your name and that personal info on the client your with. Word gets around fast and people will bury your ass to save theirs. Social media as well. I learned to speak very broadly about issues and NEVER about someone specific. The only one that knows who your referring to, is you and that's what matters.

    Hello! Idk if you saw me comment on your other video, but I’m loving your videos!! Definitely subscribed :) I just finished my training for the RBT certification and passed 😊, so I was hoping you could answer some of my questions! 1. Based on your experience how long does an RBT stay with the company? I heard you had a contract, but I was wondering because I too plan to go back to school to get my masters in school psychology in the upcoming year. Ive had a lot of unfortunate things come up that are bad timing but out of my control, so I’m kinda nervous if I’m only there a few months it may look bad... I’ve heard RBT positions have a lot of turn over anyway, so my family thinks it will be okay, regardless of how long I could stay there. 2. I am also empathic like you, and my fear is I’ll be too emotional for it, but I really like how you mentioned “crying in the car” that’s so me lol. Would you say you found yourself more down or more happy with the rewarding aspect of the job? 3. And lastly, how were you initially trained when you went into this position? I heard at my company they don’t really “train” they just call it “on the job training” but without another technician? So I’m kinda confused what that may be. Thanks again for the video & content ☺️

    Thank you for deciding to stick around, I'm happy to have you here!! 🤍🤍 Okay here are my answers!! : 1) I personally stayed for a year, and that was because of what my contract required. One of the RBTs that trained me was there for like 19 years. Some people also stay to work their way up to become a BCBA, so I think its all based on personal judgement and where you see your career going. 2) I think, by the time I found a rhythm and had my set clients things became a little better. There were some bad days and a lot of rough moments, and it really pushed me to leave sooner. The company played a part in that as well, so I really stress reading the reviews. But there are people who have completely different experiences. 3) So my training was legit training and like a course to prep for the RBT exam.It took a few weeks. We had like lectures, assignments, and role playing. Then in-house training where clients were brought in and we were observed. Then we went out in the field with other techs and got observed. Once we were certified we were on our own. Then we would have observations and progress meetings almost monthly after we made it out of training. I hope this helps!

    Thank you so much for this video, that is my biggest reserve for this career path; I'm such an empath and so emotional...I may have a lot car moments lol. What was your favorite thing to do with the job? I am still new to getting started with this Cert. I have four children so I deal with this daily, but can you talk about your primary job to do with your client, is it primarily to fix the "bad" or "challenging" behavior with them? How did you take it having to leave them and move forward?

  • @TheDanielleDenise

    Thank you for watching! My favorite part of the job was meeting my coworkers in the beginning, I dont think I couldve gotten through training and the job as a whole with out them. They were a great support team. Also, and equally important, when you've been with a client for a few months and notice how far they've come since you first started with them, it is such a wonderful thing to witness! You're mostly working with them to adjust their behaviors to fit the norms of their peers. Leaving was bittersweet, I knew i'd be leaving behind the client/family/tech relationship that i worked so hard to achieve ahahah. I miss those families and hope they're doing well. But honestly some days were very very very hard, so leaving to start school and pursue my personal goals was exciting and relieving truthfully.

I’m also not a huge fan of working with little kids (I have three little children myself and prefer older elementary through adult).... do you think I’m doomed? Sorry to be so dramatic 😂

    Hello! You're not doomed, it will take adjusting but just try to your best. What matters the most is if you put your best foot forward! If anything, no matter what happens during that interview, know that you tried and gave it your best! If you can, or know of any tricks that aren't as noticeable to others that can help redirect your attention from other external stimuli, I would suggest doing that. It may be difficult thinking of both keeping yourself calm and working with a new client but it will be a temporary solution until you're comfortable. As far as the age group you want to work with, be sure to communicate your preferences to the company but frame it so they think it's their idea. You can just let them know that you work best with a particular age group instead of saying I don't want to work with little kids. I hope this helps, and best of luck to you!

    I am new to ABA and my first and only client is non verbal. I’ve been with her for about 3 months I am having such a hard time getting her to focus or listen to me. And I’m not really sure what I can do to make sessions more fun since she doesn’t really pay attention and moves every few seconds. I wanna give up honestly.

    That is a respectful and professional choice. I would hope that your company respects that as well. I think it varies on the company and their policy, but from what I've seen, if there is ever a problem with scheduling or dynamics between you and a case they'll work something out or you'll be off the schedule by the next shift.

    Hello! Great video😌 I currently have a degree in Child and Adolescent studies and I am an Early Head Start Teacher. I don’t wish to teach forever I just needed some type of experience after school. I’ve been thinking of going to get my masters in School Psychology and wanted to know if getting a job as an ABA Therapist would be recommended before making that leap to grad school?

  • @TheDanielleDenise

    @TheDanielleDenise

    I haven't looked into it and I wonder if there is another option because sometimes you're not in the school setting. However I think overall it would help you gain a better understanding of what some of the kids go through on a personal level. I honestly feel like you could still go into getting your Masters with the experience you have now.

The more experience you can get in a job related to your field, the better. Its never too early to start building your resume!
