When I was an RBT we did 4 hour in home sessions and we were not paid for travel time. We would get mileage based on how far the client lived from the clinic (not our home) even though we didn’t go to the clinic for anything. Our clinic did provide toys and other items for free. We could fill up a duffel bag for each client. Supervision was essentially non existent for in home RBTs. I met with a supervisor for 20 minutes with my first session with a new client then didn’t hear from them at all for months. In clinic the BCBA might be there for a few hours but 80% of the clients were in home and they eventually closed the brick and mortar location in my area.

This was a great video. I definitely wish I’d found this comparison video when I was joining the field. While in school settings it was difficult to get supervision. In my experience I’ve had to do virtual supervision and that is even more difficult in a school setting because of hipaa and certain schools privacy clauses. However, I agree with the school setting being my most preferred setting, next in clinic, last in home. Thanks again for this video!

May I ask how do you handle a kid that just runs around and climbs and takes apart partitions. Doesn’t stay focused unless they have legos or other toys. I feel like all I’m so big is running after this kid trying to redirect or do table time. I work in a clinic. Your advise is much appreciated. Thank you. I’m new and with this client it makes me question my chose as an RBT.

I recently got hired as an RBT and the agency that i applied for dont have a clinic or school setting. I never had experience working with children with autism and going to their homes is not an ideal thing for me. Plus some houses are nasty and filthy.

Hi Ricky! I had a question, when you had your first job as an RBT, did you stay at that setting or did you look for other places due to not "being the best setting"? Hope to hear back, thank you for your videos!

Hi! Thanks for commenting! Personally, I sought out a new company because I had a better opportunity and at that new company is where I was exposed to working in the home and school settings.

@@rickytherbt3794 Thank you for getting back to me! I was recently hired as an RBT for the first time, but I feel like I was misguided and not exposed to information I should have known during the hiring process. My goal is to work in school or home settings, but after watching your video, I can understand why an RBT would need more experience around BCBAs initially. I am now working for an agency that goes to a special education academy and offers services to children there, but I am looking for another setting. Thank you for your video, the content helps those in the field understand things that companies won't say to employees.

All of my home and school sessions are at least 4 hours, sometimes 5, rarely less! Interesting to hear how everyone has shorter home sessions.

My company also does not pay for travel time at all. Currently traveling 30 miles each way (about 45 min each way) 5 days a week for one of my clients. Located in Central Florida

I would never drive 4 hours for a job. That's a whole road trip! Where do you live? I live in South Florida. There is an abundance of nearby cases.

I have had in home sessions anywhere from 2-6hrs it depends on the plan, client deficits etc. most companies that have contracts in multiple settings or have multiple RBTs they will break up the hrs amongst techs. If the company is solely home based clients then you’ll likely have more direct 1:1 hrs in home. It really can depend on many factors.
