The Division 2 Community Is Not Happy With Seasons 2.0, And They Are Right
Ойындар
One of the most controversial parts of the Division 2's Year 6 Reveal was the new seasonal content. In this video I am going to explore why the community is upset, and why they might be right.

Seasonal characters are, I believe, to make it new players equal to veterans. Basically, they are saying all the players who helped this game grow do not matter. They want the new players. Second, the devs are notorious for making you grind for everything and do it their way, not the players' intuitive thinking.

The cornification of shooters is definitely a problem and it seems to have spread to the division. Remember the atmosphere and grit of the first game? Sure it wasn't everyone's cup of tea but it made the game unique. I always felt like I was in a struggle for my life in the first game. This game feels more like fortnite with realistic building models stretched over it. Ubisoft thinks goofy looking weapon skins and light up mask and bright pink raincoats are something that anyone would wear (and not be dead day 1) during a catastrophe. This isn't the purge, it's supposed to be taking itself seriously according to the plot, but it isn't and this weird mashup of fortnite antics and realistic backdrops clashes horribly.

I remember back in 2016/17 division 1 players got a questionnaire about what we liked and disliked about games and one question was, how intressted are you in cosmetics?
As a veteran Division player myself, I agree with what you are saying here and this is why there was no SOG and they just slotted a trailer into Ubisoft forward. Veteran players won't benefit from Seasonal Characters but new players and those who haven't got WONY will be able to progress without the expansion I think that is to get more players onto the platform but there is a problem with this Ubisoft doesn't give a rats arse about the players they just care about the statistics. What has happened lately is I've noticed an influx of teenagers playing this game, especially in Countdown players are being booted from groups for being too veteran and I joined a player who was level 20 and had all the Directives on and was playing on Heroic and I noticed all the players left including myself and he sent me a message asking why I left and I said you're playing level 20 all directives on and on Heroic we will be constantly reviving you. And your gear and weapons are like a peashooter and paper armour.

Blizzard perfected the art of a rolling more casual player base that generates a lot of money for them. Time for Ubisoft to leverage this! 🤣 The number of striker drones in Countdown does seem to be increasing.

Very sensible question. The seasonal characters are coming with Season 2 which starts in roughly four months. If you want to participate in the story for that season, or the seasonal content, then yes, you will need to create a new level 1 seasonal character. Level 30 and 40 each have a crafting table, if you donate stuff through the libaray from level 1 to 30 and then restart a character that level 30 crafting table is still there. My level 15 player that should have 6000 armour but has nearly 30k, my best weapons that you find has 3.5% weapon damage but because of the level 30 table I can transfer the max 9.9% to the weapon, if you had a max roll to add to the libaray. So when the table gets unlocked by getting the woman from the settlement to join the Whitehouse I wonder if that table still works for season 2.0?
@NYLCasualGaming

Good question. We will see. But irrespective of that, you may not be able to hold a character at lvl 30 as they will now continue to level up to 40 in DC. So the crafting table is somewhat useless.

I think if the game was more like WoW I would be in favor of that - unique gear at each level cap making the grind for gear fun and interesting. But that isn’t how gear is structured so there would need to be some sort of way to raise the level on gear up to the new max level or the same issues we have with the new seasonal content arises. Destiny does that so it is absolutely possible. My preference though is for new replayable content rather than a level cap gain. Give us game modes that are fun to play again and again. Sadly Massive have missed on more than they have hit with this in Div 2.

They really should have anticipated that such a big change in direction would need further clarification. It's funny how with project resolve they made weekly and daily projects give enough xp for one level then return it to back to a quarter or a level. And the only project that does give one level is the premium season project you buy for 10 dollars. I don’t really understand the point you are trying to make here.
I don't see how seasonal characters will aid player retention, new or old. I've always felt that style is made for turnover. New players can constantly join every new season, but how many will stick around long term when their characters constantly get reset? Sure, you get rewards to use on your "main", but if you always have to use a seasonal character for the new content, those rewards are little more than digital wall trophies you never get to really use.
@NYLCasualGaming

It’s more about creating a funnel through to the endgame which is what will then retain players. All of the focus over the last year has been on removing barriers for new players so they get to that end game as quickly as possible. With the Brooklyn DLC coming in 2025, the timing is perfect.
As someone that's been wanting to get back into D2 this new seasonal 2.0 stuff has me hyped. I'm sad it didn't come with Y6S1 but I'm happy to wait, I just hope they don't scrap it and at least give it a try. Really looking forward to a new season and being on the same level as everyone else

They are more accessible to new and casual players. They don’t feel left behind or intimidated by players who have thousands of hours in the game. Part of the reason we are all so powerful is that they buffed most weapons and brandsets with Project Resolve. Those buffs aren’t going anywhere. The level 1 to 40 wasn’t exactly hard before the buffs so I think it is a little optimistic to think this is suddenly going to be a challenge. And this isn’t a few play throughs. Div 3 is years away - 2 to 3 at least so probably 10+ reruns. But that isn’t really the issue here. The issue is why aren’t they focusing their resources on delivering new playable content. The answer of course is that they will generate more revenue by driving new player growth with rehashed old content. But look, glad you are looking forward to it. It is aimed at new players and returning players like you. Get you back into the game ready for the paid Brooklyn DLC. Get your wallet ready.

I went back to Division 1 this week for a new character build and those players that I saw are brand new players to the game. When you look at any player it'll always show their achievement level and the ones I saw are still under level 100. So even if you look at my level 19 character you can still tell that I'm an older player because regardless of in game rank my achievement level is 2500ish so it's good to see brand new players.
That was the game I returned this year. it was needed for the games that use the same system, when u get tired of the ongoing season. And need a break from the game. I have a character that u call "main" and i have that char from day 1 from division 2. I don't have much playtime, since i've got to work and for some reason I had a bunch of kids also. But I think all this "barrier lifted for new players", is a big missunderstanding for the developers. I've attracted about 20-30 people to play the game with me or solo by giving them my advice. I believe that this kind of "improvement" will decrease the amount of players, that will really support the company. Simply by not having someone who helps them forward. I't is easy to get a character 0-40. But if u have as much playtime as me, then any advice from experienced players is much appreciated. So, long story short: I believe that making "main" chars useless, makes the veteran/experienced players to quit the game. Also i believe that the "barrier" thing is temporary, because they get tired of the game quickly and quit. But that is only my own "modest" opinion. If that happens, i definetly will not play the game again, unless this is reverted.
@NYLCasualGaming

You make some solid points. I don’t think vets will leave quite yet. they will be pissed but the promise of the Brooklyn DLC will keep them from quitting entirely. I also think that keeping players is not necessarily the plan. A churn of new players is better for revenue so having a continual turnover is fine.
IMHO if they only changed one thing about the Division 2, I wish they would add a last man standing extraction pvp survival where a cloud of small pox was closing in and random loot boxes and crafting stations were around for the agent to loot and use to get to and call the extraction in. like survival but not using time or infection to push to the extract but the cloud, and if you get stuck in the cloud you get sick and can only get better if you find medicine, and are easier to pick off than others who never got caught in the cloud, but still have slim hope of survival. The longer you stay in the cloud the faster the infection worsens. No cold to deal with in this instance.

Give Black Tusk Flamethrower warhounds, have Rikers have artillery troopers, I dont know just be creative. To me it's a general concern that the mistakes here are so obvious to us, but Ubisoft and Massive fail to see this. I think there is a video needed on why Descent and Summit failed, but Survival, Underground and Resistance succeeded. In part atmosphere. In part the RNG is the wrong place. In part the lack of risk and reward in Summit. In part the open ended nature of them versus the mission based or target based of Underground and Survival. I’m sure there are other reasons. Massive should also have taken some queues from descent. Part of the reason people didn’t like it is because you can’t play your own character. Roll forward to the seasonal characters and is anyone surprised by the reaction? I agree that it seems obvious to us. But I also think it is obvious what they are doing. Descent was a great mode for new players without an endgame build. Everything about year 6 so far has been aimed at new players. And new players drive revenue.
So long as 2.0 is solo player friendly.... I won`t be forced in to pvp.

Because the community doesn’t want to play a seasonal character. They want new replayable content they can play with the characters they have invested time in. The current manhunts are rubbish - the same old tired content with a voiceover - so no one is asking for it to be reverted back. They are asking for Massive to stop rehashing old content and forcing players to play it if they want to see the story unfold, and focus on new game modes, incursions, raids, pvp, etc. Is it unreasonable for the community to want what they have been asking for since launch?
Massive Entertainment is a bid let down. How greedy can you be? I really like this game but they are running veteran players away. Not that I care that much about dedicated PVP players but they have big issues with these changes too. I really need to stop investing in live service games.

It sound to me that the game makers want us to start a new character for 3 months and then restart a new character every 3 months because the season mode is a 12 week thing. I like the first 30 levels but, and it's a big but, I don't find this games story mode interesting. Your first mission is to save Odessa daughter, is that my job? But we do it any ways to progress but after that, I'm not entirely sure what the story missions are about, we are just told to go here, go there and it just feels like I'm a dogs body working for people that aren't your boss and your just doing favors for random strangers. But going to WONY felt more of a storyline chasing the guy from the first game, the base game in the Division 2 didn't feel like a division game until WONY,

A very common sentiment and one I can relate to. I would say maybe wait for the uninstall to see what the Brooklyn DLC brings. But a good time to take a break and play some of the other great games coming out this Summer.
This "new" season is just a middle finger to us from the devs. Every season, they at least somewhat redid the missions, but this season they copy pasted the exact same mission from the main story. DUA mission is exactly the same as it was in the main story, they didn't even change any dialogues from allies or enemies, even the bosses we killed in main story are alive again in this new seasonal story as if we never killed them or they are resurrected somehow. They keep milking this game and the player base that it's bleeding now, the "drip feed" method they use every season is another middle finger to us. For 6 months they only give us 1 exotic weapon, 1 exotic gear, 1 gear set, 1 brand set and remodeled weapons and no new content at all again and again, they haven't even introduced any new weapon other than exotics in the game since the DLC. Guns with new perks aren't new guns they are remodeled milked content. I am getting sick of this drip feed method. Look at how Destiny 2 and other live services handle their seasons, they introduce new content, new guns and new something, but what these devs do is keep feeding us the same old content over and over and whats even more stupid is that most player base doesn'd seem to notice and they appreciate them for this. People say "if your arent goint to appreciate what devs are doing, how are they going to give us new content". Look at where we are now, they have started copy pasting content as it is and call it "new". What people doesn't seem to notice is that they are exploiting this game and the player base but people are with their eyes closed taking all their BS unfiltered and praising them for this. Its been 2 seasons and there is not even a single new incursion is the the first one. What shows that devs dont care about this game is the map, the map UI looks like so childish with nothing organised and all the places and floating on circles all over the place, creating this clutter which looks even more hideous.
@NYLCasualGaming

Agreed. The odd thing about the ‘let’s wait and see’ reaction to this reveal is that it just gives the devs a pass to keep doing the minimum that they have been doing for many years. I’ve heard many times with this ‘well they only have a small team on this, what do you expect?’. They are choosing to not resource the game to give its player base the content that they actually want, and we should give them a pass for doing this? It is such a weird relationship and acceptance of mediocrity. A bit like Stockholm syndrome where we love the developers who are holding us captive.

If it is successful in driving new players and casual players who drop in and out of the game, and this drives revenue, you may well be right.
Check this out Division 2 year 6 is all about $$$. Deleting world tiers and an entire gear platform (gear score 100-500) cuts maintenance, server space, and even number of "fixes" required when there is a problem. New manhunts equal significant increase in players which equals server space. Seasonal characters with no stash or backpack will prevent the need for this server space when more players log in. Div 2 is going into auto pilot and they are cutting back on resources not changing the game for player enjoyment. Last manhunt did not

Well you can play your main for this season but I can relate to your sentiments. Div 1 is still the better game by far. I hope to see you in NY.
Am no way veteran, played both D1 and D2, enjoying both very much coop-ing with my wife but in no means a grinder or a minmax-er or whatnot. We just enjoyed the game with what we have actually, so basically a real casual. I dont really get the fuss, veterans have been doing watch mule rinse and repeat for thousands of cycles anyway. If my understanding is correct, seasonal will just be that, isn't it? But instead of the same brainless cycle all the time, there will be seasonal content now, so people can enjoy the experience as well and re-experience the variety the Dev has in store. Maybe yes, there will be no 'new content' for end game, but it is 'end game' for a reason. And if my understanding is correct, and after season reset, all the exp gained during the season will still go into the main char exp, which is basically just a more fun watch mule run is it? Once vets are done with the season content, they can continue to do whatever they usually do with the main char. Should be a win-win as there will be more new player base which will just bring more people to shoot in pvp, more content to create, and i dont think new players will be able to 'catch up' to where the vets are in term of main char due to all the time invested in the watch and all the upgrades etc if that is the concern. I think should be a good outcome for all, and probably this thinking is the reason why there are dividing opinion, is it? I am just a fan sharing my own thoughts that is not influenced by any other facts/opinion, and just seeing what in front of me now.
@NYLCasualGaming
Ай бұрын
Players have invested a lot of time and effort into their main characters to play the way they want to play. They don’t want to just throw that away to experience the only regular source of new content they get. The whole thing is incredibly immersion breaking. A new character is going to interact with Keener who has come back from the dead, before they have killed him in the leveling process. Time to introduce time travel into the game. The cycle is just as brainless. Leveling 1-40 in the same open world activities, same missions, same game modes that have been done to death. Seasons 2.0 was sold to players as one of the key ways to improve player enjoyment. It is the same stuff everyone is doing now. We have seasonal content already - global events, leagues, apparel events. All they are doing is taking those and putting them into a 1-40 leveling process. This is a rehash of the same old content. This is not delivering on the promises they made. Veteran players don’t need xp or to farm for gear they have already got. So the seasonal character is not going to add anything of use over than maybe for the stash space. Except it’s not permanent stash space because the 5th slot is always seasonal and reset. Mule runs are done for a specific purpose, resources not experience. They are a means to an end, not a fun activity. The xp you get for leveling is a fraction of the xp you can get in an hour of playing at max level. At least it was until they just secretly nerfed it in order to make the seasonal characters more attractive. Not getting any new content from this is an issue because it has tied up resources that could have been focused on developing the type of content veteran players actually want to play. I don’t even understand what you mean by ‘it is end game for a reason’. The content at max level is what everyone at max level plays. It is the only content they want to play. So no new content is a problem. And saying ‘veteran players can go back to what they actually want to be playing after they have ground through 10 hours of pointless tedium’ is not a great sell. There is no win win here really. Veteran players are not getting anything new here and resources have been diverted away from developing the sort of content they want. They are also being told that they can’t play the game the way they like to and that they have been sold on all these years. Veteran players have lost out here. New players are good for the health of the game and Ubisoft’s revenues, but let’s be honest it is the latter that is more important to them. I have never run into an issue with queue times for any game mode. I never find the dz empty. This is window dressing to sell us something that really isn’t for us. And the sad thing is that most veteran players I speak to would open their wallets in an instant if the devs announced a season like we had in Div 1, which came with Survival, Last Stand, Underground, and Resistance. They are happy to pay for the type of content they want to play. But I guess Ubi gets more money from skins that new players will buy.

From the outside my impression is that Destiny lost players due to expansions being poor and the player base not liking them (lightfall). I wouldnt say the franchise has always treated players well. Div 2 has been a roadmap of glitches and nerfs since day one - it is only in a half decent state now. And seriously, how long has the player base been asking for a survival and underground mode and just been ignored. This has to be the begining of the end. The focus on 'new' players surely cant work at this point of the games lifecycle. Who will pick up the game now that doesnt already have it? I meant from a cash point of view. One upfront purchase and then content for years is pretty good. But I agree, the requests for the content players actually want has been largely ignored. The use of ‘a new beginning’ in the presentation was very FF14 ish and it’s reboot. As for DLC, Brooklyn is confirmed …. unless they cancel it!!

Your comments about Survival/Underground/Resistance are spot on. Revenue generating mechanics are exactly what Ubisoft is after because they ultimately want new player money to be injected into the live service machine that is Division 2. It’s more profitable to virtually erase the barrier to entry for new players while making them feel just as powerful as veteran players (via seasonal characters), all in the hopes they’ll buy cosmetics, battle passes, and the like. This issue we are seeing happen before our eyes is indeed the bane of any live service game.

I would agree with that particularly post Project Resolve and all the buffs it delivered. I remember when the game launched and it felt much tougher. You got caught in the open and it was game over. Now with all the power creep you can face tank most of the content with the right build. 🤷🏼♂️
First lets be clear, you are complaining about something you THINK is coming... Second, NEW CONTENT IS COMING! ...its the DLC, which certainly will be paid, and include a level increase and new gear making all your precious "hard earned" builds worthless. Probably mods will still be good, but again, don't know. Maybe there will be exotic mods. One thing is clear it will do what Warlords did, reset the game. Thirdly, yes seasons are a catch- up mechanic allowing new players to jump into the game and play relevant content with other players. They need to get all players ready for the DLC and hopefully draw new players as hype builds. As a side, some players love a good loot drop game. That's one thing that made Survival mode fun in D1, being excited for a purple drop. Currently i break everything down for mats because ive got everything i need. I like seasons in my loot games, it changes things up.

You first point doesn’t make sense. They announced the content so we know it is coming and based on my knowledge of the game and the developer I have made some reasonable assumptions around the details they touched on. And yes I actually refer to the Brooklyn DLC many times in the video. Interestingly you have made some assumptions here as we don’t know that there will be a level increase. And if there is, which seems unlikely given the only other level increase was before expertise and optimization was introduced into the game, we don’t know if they would include a system to increase the gear level of existing weapons. So it is not clear at all that it will reset the game. That is a big assumption with no data to support it either way. I’m glad that you agree that the announcements were for the benefit of new players and not existing players. As I said in the video, a larger player base is good for the long term health of the game. But it is perfectly reasonable for the existing community to be upset that there is no content for them and that their investment in the game is being disregarded. If Massive had been less disingenuous about it, more open and honest about who benefits from this and why they were doing it, maybe the community would be more accepting of it. Ubisoft Massive is a huge company. They have the resources to deliver changes for new players and deliver new repeatable content for existing players. So why are we so eager to suck it up and accept we are getting nothing.

@@hellbilly666st .. We know that no one is going to die. Dont be a jack ass. people have a right to be upset when something THEY PAID FOR is not going well.The next time your order food from a restaurant, if they totally mess up your order, eat it anyway and don't say anything., right prick.
