The Distinctive Calls of Owls: A Sampler

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Most owls are nocturnal, and they use their voices to establish territories and attract mates in the dark. Several species begin nesting during as early as midwinter, which is one reason why you can often hear them in fall and winter, when most other birds are quiet.
For more owl sounds, check out Voices of North American Owls, macaulaylibrary.org/guide/voic... available through our Macaulay Library. This comprehensive audio guide is highly sought after and no longer available on CD. The digital download includes nearly 200 audio recordings of North America's 19 regularly occurring owl species, plus two rarities. The accompanying 28-page booklet contains detailed text and color photographs about each of the owls featured in the audio download.

    I'm trying to identify the owl that's currently having the time of its life outside my window. It's 1am and my search continues. 3yrs later update: It was a barred owl. There are apparently several in my neighborhood. Every now and then, they scare the crap out of me. But recently there's been a new noise. It's a horrible shriek, but I haven't looked that one up yet.

I shined a light all around, and imagine my surprise when the only thing that could have sounded like that was perched on a branch! We were both curious about each other but it ended up flying away when I came back a second time just to make sure there wasn't really a wounded puppy lol. Wow. I've been trying to identify that screeching sound the barn owl makes for a long time. In my region (northern california) there is some kind of animal that makes that noise... but it only calls once (not in a repetition like the owl in this example). It does not repeat reliably, making it very hard to find the animal (never seen it), it may call again after several minutes pass... but again, only once with a lot of time passing before calling again, if at all. I suspected it was a bird, someone tried to tell me it was a raccoon, but now I'm sure it's some kind of barn owl.

    I saw a beatiful Barred Owl in the morning recently, here in Texas. Here's an owl story to be cautious of... A very large barn owl ate my Chihuahua. I'd discovered the owl when my dogs were barking like mad in our yard. I walked out the back, porch door to check-out the commotion. Unknowingly, I'd just walked right passed an owl, purchase on a chair to my immediate right, only 1 or 2 feet from the porch door I'd just exited. I was still confused by our dog's barking when I noticed their attention was fixated in the direction of the my house. When I turned to look back at the house I saw a huge, beautiful, white barn owl. It was somewhat pinned by the canapy of the porch & it couldn't easily fly passed me & the dogs. It had it's wings spread wide-open & was hissing loudly, then witin a few seconds it saw an opening & flew away. I was just standing there with my mouth open, experiencing shock & awe at my first sighting of an owl & so close!!! I was a kid & couldn't imagine what a owl was doing perched inside my porch, that is, until the next morning when I went out to feed the dogs. The only thing I found of my Chihuahua was a paw. I'd just confiscated the latest object our puppy was chewing-on, in so doing I was mortified to discover it was a small paw. From then on our small dogs became, strictly, house-dogs. I know her death was fast & my chihuahua had a good life up to that point but I don't blame the owl, it was just trying not to starve & so feed itself. So, try to protect all your small animals from birds of prey (& coyotes) by keeping them inside the house or a kennel. :●}

    @Furn333 implying you would have killed the owl? What exactly would that have solved, besides making you into a felon. Yes, shoot, shovel, shut-up, but that doesn't change the fact that anyone who shoots an owl without a permit is breaking state and federal laws. I know some situations are very difficult, but the owl is an important part of the ecosystem, and needlessly harming them is not good for anybody, including humans. For those that are unaware, it is against the law to harm owls, hawks and other raptors without a permit. It is illegal to even possess a feather of one of these birds. I am truly very sorry for those who have lost pets to outdoor predators (I have had and been very close to my own pets before), but solving violence with more violence is not the answer.

    I'm in extreme northern Utah and every night we watch the owls come out and land on the neighbors rooftop. They kinda screech and recently started taping their beaks. Well today about 11 am I startled one in the carport/ garage/barn type thing. It was huge and silently flew out while I stood there having a heartattack. They (3) were back this evening just before dark. Hanging out on the top the jeep and rafters. And my kids can't figure out why I don't move into town closer to them.
