The Barred Owl

Carrie Szwed, White Memorial Conservation Center's Education Director, introduces you to Shakespeare, one of WMCC ambassador program animals. Shakespeare, a Barred Owl, came to WMCC after recovering from a wing injury that left him unable to fly.

I live in Northeast Ohio, and I hear these beautiful creatures hooting in my backyard all the time. But just this evening, I saw one perched on a tree branch outside my bedroom window, and excitedly got my parents and little brother to go look at it too. It didn't make any noise, it just sat there cleaning itself. I really should have just taken a picture of it from inside the house, but I wanted to get a really clear one, so I tried to get a picture outside of him a little closer. The very second I opened the door, he flew away, and I didn't get a picture. Hopefully, I'll see the owl again someday outside my bedroom window, and I'll be able to take a picture of it. This time I'll do it from inside the house, though.

Kansas City here aswell. 430 in the morning and there are atleast 2 of these owls in the tree next to my window. I thought I had heard something while watching the news so I turned down the TV and heard these owls calling each other across my neighborhood. I could hear the ones in the distance pretty well but the ones right outside my window were really loud. With it being almost Halloween and a bright moon in the sky it was pretty cool and creepy at the same time sitting here listening to them for about 30 minutes or so. They either flew away, went to sleep or getting it on right now because I can't hear them anymore. lol I think the city waking up with all the different noises it brings scared them off probably. All in all it was cool while it lasted. For all I know they could be staring at me through my skylight. lol

When I was a kid, my dad volunteered at a local raptor recovery site. They had a barred owl named Miracle. During the Clinton administration, the whole thing with spotted owls came up and some logger got a hold of her and staked her to a tree. By the time the lady who ran the center found her, one wing was so infected, it had to be amputated. I got to hold her during a public showing and she was a treat to hold. She was so affectionate and sweet. Barred owls are so cute!

What I enjoyed learning today thanks to the WMCC's Director Carrie: Barred owls have asymmetrical ears and lack the ability to smell. While the owl lacks the sense of smell, it is able to 'triangulate' exactness. That's quite a trade off.

Love these beautiful birds. I hear them frequently in Charleston, SC. And, on occasion, I have the special treat of seeing them staring at me from the branches of our towering oak trees. The only owl I've ever seen during the daytime! Those eyes really do feel like they are looking straight through you.

I have heard these in the wild, at night while camping. She did a really good, if short, impression. This and a deer "buck snorting" are probably the two coolest things I've heard in the woods.

We have a lovely Barred couple that lives in the trees on the back of our property. My young dog doesn't like dwelling in the back yard most nights bc the owls will begin calling back and forth to each other and he likes to sit perfectly still and alert, face pointed in the direction of the nearest or loudest bird. Once, they started territorial calls and poor pupper put himself between me and the noise, then hid behind me, then began whimpering at the door, demanding to get inside. They can sound spooky late at night.. but still so pretty.

Excellent presentation! I love owls. They are my favorite raptor and species of birds. I am happy I stumbled on this video. Years ago, we used to have a Great Horned Owl up in the trees behind my neighbors unit across the street from me. It was a real gift to hear that call. I wish it was still around. The Barred Owl is gorgeous and what a beautiful call. What a great attempt at imitating the call! Keep up the great work!

I live in central MA and have seen barred owls a few times - they're so big!! That wingspan is definitely a shocker when one flies over my head out on the trail. They don't seem to be too bothered by me and on one occasion I walked right up to one face to face before I noticed it was there 👀

I live in FL and I have a pair of barred owls. They're pretty friendly and love to follow me around and chat for long periods of time, especially the male. It never gets old. They always stay up about 20 feet, though. Haven't figured out how to get them to come closer yet.

So beautiful, so sad. We have "mole heaven" for all our neighboring birds of prey...

Feb 22, 2020 -- I live in GA and last night, at least 3 Barred Owls lured my entire family outside because they were extremely vocal!!! We tried to locate any one of them with a light but we were unable to do so. We literally heard their hoots from inside our house because they were so loud. I don't remember this ever happening before and we felt extremely lucky to know they were so close even if we couldn't see them. We also have 3 Red Shouldered Hawks that stalk our bird feeders and a couple of weeks ago, I peeked out of my kitchen window to find one of them perched on my back porch railing. I was ecstatic to witness such an amazing bird so closely even though I knew why he was in my yard.......for my critters (birds, chipmunks & squirrels) that I love to feed. BTW: We also have a 6lb Yorkie and a larger Pom so I hope they aren't the Hawk attraction!

Thank you for your beautiful story of the wildlife community living beside you! The bard owls may be talking territory and romance with all that loud vocalization going on:-) Your dogs should be safe ... it's the bobcats, coyotes, fishers (and cars) and like that might enjoy a pup-snack:-( Nothing like observing wild beings close up!

Isn't he just the most majestic bird! Great question, Debbie! We don't pet him...it is too stressful. Unlike domestic cats and dogs, and some species of "pet" birds, this and most wild/rehabilitated (but too compromised to release back into the wild) animals do not welcome pats of affection. They do like being admired from afar:-)
