When I was in high school choir, another member told me that I remind him of Lea Salonga. I'm half Vietnamese. When I looked her up, I found out she sang in my favorite childhood Disney movies and I was grateful for the huge compliment. I have admired her ever since.

I'm an American who moved to the Philippines and they LOVE singing here. It is one of their favorite past times. The first time I ever heard of Karaoke was on one of my earlier visits here before I moved here. In America we have a very strong critical attitude that means you must sing well or it is disaster. The attitude in the Philippines is "go ahead and try". And they have so many really great singers as a result of their openness to getting up and just giving it your best shot. In addition the girls here also soooooo cute! If Miss Universe Contest REALLY knew beauty the Philippine would win EVERY year! Lea has been around for some time now and still looks fantastic. They recently discovered another amazing singer here, Morrissette Amon (her dad was a big fan of Alanis Morrissette and so named his little girl after his favorite singer). If you want to be totally blown away by a song try the "Wish Bus" performance of Mori singing Akin Ka Na Lang (click on the captions cc button the lyrics are touching). listening to Filipinas like Lea and Mori sing is heavenly, and I'm sure that Filipinos who read this could add many more to the list of fantastic singers here.

Fun fact : Obama was once go to school when he was like 6-11 in Asia, specificly Indonesia 🇮🇩

I was in high school in the 80's and auditioned for Charity in Barnum. My drama teacher at the time set me aside and told me he would like to give me the part, but it was meant to be played for a caucasian woman. I told him I understood and was disappointed. Years later in college in the late 80's my dance professor in college asked me why I was not in a dance that he thought was right for me. I brushed it off and just told him I don't know. I did know and made no big deal about it. The dance was set in a medieval period. I didn't know about the race issues back then. Seeing Lea Salonga break the asian taboo in musicals made me proud of her and our nationality. Love Lea!

Fun fact: Philippines is the first with colour granted by the Americans to have its own representative and delegates in the US congress when the Philippines is their colonial territory before the African-Americans. Lea is very talented. She deserves everything,from awards,fame,to fans and etc. She's very powerful,her voice always shows emotions that were meant for the song. There's honestly nothing wrong about being asian, it's just that judgemental people are dominating the world. The moment I first heard Lea Salonga's voice, I immediately fell in love. Even my mother adores her very much. I used to remember as a kid, a yodler when my mom woukd sing me to sleep. Thank you so much so this video. Truly a tribute to all those who experience prejudice just because you were born of different color. As a Filipino, it made me even more proud of my heritage and my color. We are all equal, we were all born the same way, breathe the same air, drink the same water. Color is just skin-deep.

To those of you commenting about her perfect American accent, in case you didn't know, Lea's first language IS English. She may have been born in the Philippines but her language has always been English. As a matter of fact, her Tagalog was almost non-existent when she was a young child. Even today, if she speaks Tagalog you will clearly see that she is not very comfortable with the language. If you ever see an episode of The Voice Philippines where she was a judge, you can clearly see her struggle with speaking Tagalog, especially if she had to say a lengthy dialogue. So yes, while you guys were correct that she is well-educated (valedictorian in HS and a premed student in college), she didn't learn English in school. English is, always has been, her home language.

Im a filipino and also Lea Salonga is one of the most famousr singers in the Philippines, she's also one of the judges of the voice Philippines because of how she teaches young singers to sing with pride, joy, and freedom

So that's why I sometimes see "no matter how good you are " "there is always an asian kid better than you"

Why is the Philippines usually called "The Philippines"? Because the Spanish referred to their colony as “Las Islas de Filipinas”. When the Americans came, they translated the colony's name to “The Philippine Islands”. After independence, it was shortened to “The Philippines” - A random Quora user

I'm one of those lucky people who got to watch & listen to Leah live on stage and I couldn't forget the feeling of just being so engrossed with how she takes control of my emotions. I literally had to remind myself to breathe. She's so captivating and it doesn't matter if you're listening to the song for the first time, she sings it like she's telling a story. She's just phenomenal.

Truly a disney legend!!! She shaped the voice of princess, kudos!

I can listen to her sings over and over I won't get tired ... her voice is like a violin.....

Imagine the terror of her facing the discrimination and hate, despite that she remained intact with her willingness to share her talent, and do what it is that she love. If I was her, I would've backed down, cry and lose my mind. She's so BRAVE and she inspire me not only as a woman but as human. Love lots Ms. Lea and Godbless. I hope people would give equal opportunity to others despite their race.

I'm going to say, I'm not asian, I'm a POC and I feel terrible when ever someone else gets shunned because of ancestry or race.
