Uncle Ruckus isn't meant as just "shock humor", he's a character that's meant to embody self-hating black people specifically. From an interview with Aaron McGruder: "Uncle Ruckus represents an ignorant past that we can look back and laugh at because we are a long way away from it now. At least, that’s what you hope… But I think part of why the character is popular is because a lot of us know somebody like him. We know black people who are stuck in the 1800s. All of their anger and rage at being black in America has somehow been redirected back onto other black people."

@@cormano64he could just be covering one facet of ruckus without getting too much into it, he doesn’t seem to cover a point for too long he’s short and sweet with it and moves on unless it’s something others start also commenting on much like the discussion that happens after ruckus.

One interesting thing I like from this episode is that when jasmine yells at Huey and tells him to leave, he actually looks genuinely hurt by that. This is add a bit more depth into their relationship and it’s one of rare moments we see Huey like that.

I feel like the witter thought they would be spin offs, where we see Huey and Riley older and show the dynamics of jasmine and hueys relationship for later. But we can’t see much of it rn cos they’re kids

Uncle Ruckus is a perfect caricature. He is supposed to be so crazy exaggeratedly stupid it is amazing.

This episode is almost 2 decades old yet so much of it hit today, and the difference is I think people are more aware but wealth has calcify so much since this aired.

My comment remains the same. even during BLM protest we had counter arguments against it: ALL Lives Matter And BLUE Lives matter, but I will say the difference this time was riots definitely sped things up to have people arrested while we still have people debate about it.

We tried the peaceful route multiple times did we not??? MLK wasn’t this super non violent and non radical guy as people thought he was, he was extremely radical especially as time went on, he didn’t like rioting but understood why people did it AND knew eventually non violent protest can only go so far for real impactful change he wrote he was starting to see the limit to what non violent protest can achieve it’s obvious what he meant by this line.

This episode is simply about how we destroying the world 🌎 and everyone worrying about having a good time and capitalism, when the main problem is it’s 90 degrees in February Huey has his coat the whole time cause he is only grounded in reality, he knows it’s February but everyone else just going ham Very powerful episode

This got deep and heated. IMO, it is true that buildings are lifelines and when riots happen small ones especially shouldn't be subject to Looting or Burned down. But the bigger issue is how we got to this point in the 1st place and to ignore that key purpose or detract from that key issue is in turn the problem. Like if you'd said more about a Target which again matters but hear what you're saying. A business to you carries more weight on your conscious then a human life.

Damn. I watched this show as a child when it first aired. I was young and naive and just laughed at the cursing and adult content as if this show was no different from Family Guy or South Park. When I grew up and watched this show again I was able to understand all the expertly crafted social commentary. Everyone says shows like this predicted current social issues but the sad truth is those issues were happening all along, we're just noticing it now. I can't wait for you to watch The Passion of Uncle Ruckus.

Uncle Ruckus represented that loud and up-in-your-face racism, but it was in the form of a self-hating black man. Wuncler is the embodiment of systemic racism, which is more subtle and yet still insidious. Even when he made very obvious derogatory statements, Wuncler did more damage with his calculated moves. McGruder really was just a genius.

I agree on the Uncle Ruckus thing fs. I reeeaaallly love San 2 and 3 bc it has more episodes like this one. I feel like San 1 for me is half great, half okay eps - whereas with sun 2 and 3 I feel like most of the episodes are great. The commentary is definitely at its highest in season one, but the characters of Huey, Riley, and Grandad get so much more to them through 2 and 3. Szn 4 is basically ' classic boondocks'.

I would say S1 had great episodes all around, along with S2. S3 was where we got some of the worst episodes along with some of the best. And calling S4 "classic Boondocks" feels like a hate crime, that shit doesn't count as Boondocks.

Not really. The Freemans start getting sidelined in favor of other characters starting in season 2. Most of their emotional range (especially Huey's) starts disappearing there, also, as they become more and more flanderized. Season 4's as far away from "classic Boondocks" as one could get. It's a bastardization of the tone and style from season 3.

Chris and marketa has a point, the others to some extent did to, Senselessly destroying random stuff especially in a poor area is No bueno, but *calculated* violence has throughout history worked especially in movements that were about the oppressed. Violence isn’t the first resort but it change doesn’t happen it will be the last, and that’s how it always go, especially if it involves a group that has been oppressed

...I agree with Chris, Marketa and Rana. Yall are real ones. Protest happens because "the state" (which includes our mostly idiotic news media machine) cares more about businesses and enterprise and money than the common folk/people who are seen as "lesser". People riot and start destroying shit and, by extension, small business get caught up in this. This will always happen especially when the riots/protests stem from issues which hit very closely to people's unchangeable identities, for example, their race. It doesn't happen purposefully, most of the time, it happens organically as protesters are met with disproportional force by "the state" and those who purport to be protectors of all those within this system; and when those in office with the power to enact change sit on their hands; and when the media chooses to focus on the potential monetary damage these protests could cause. So, people get upset shit happens and shit gets broken. And then the media puts the faces of these small business owners on TV who are rightfully upset about their business getting looted/damaged which only furthers that tired and honestly milquetoast statement of "nonviolent protest". Throughout history "nonviolent protest" has done jack shit. And don't bring up MLK or Ghandhi. People died, especially on the side of those fighting for their rights, so it defintely was not "nonviolent". And those who own small businesses like those on the TV will side with this statement and in the future decry the protests because it may affect their own livelihood, even if they would ultimately be on the side of those who are doing the protesting/riots in the first place. "Gotta get mines" right? Capitalism at work. If everyone set aside their own personal gain, banded together and said "yeah, fuck those buildings" you would see how quickly things would change for everyone. The protesters and those with small buildings alike.
