Movie fact: Karl Urban did remove his mask cause like always he made himself intimate with the source material. And in the comics Dredd never removes his mask and a lot of the panels contain reflection shots of his visor so he wanted that included in the movie

Dredd had no business being this good but we're all grateful for it.

Don’t even mind we didn’t get a sequel as it’s a prime example of a proper comic adaptation. Just wish they could’ve worked the ABC robots in somehow but it’s all good. One nice aspect of the Stallone version was the robot.

Dredd is basically unstoppable, a force of nature. It's totally in character for you to not fear for him. You're supposed to fear for everyone else around him

Karl Urban killed it in the role too, his performance is never over the top, he really nailed Dredd: he shows up, he cites the law, he passes judgement, he states the sentence, he executes it, job done. No more, no less

As a longterm fan of the comics, Dredd is the cornerstone for the setting more than a character. Dredd will never die. Dredd has no character growth. He's a narrative constant and the best stories happen around him, to other characters. Those characters can have finite arcs. They can die, very easily. The stakes are real, anything can happen to them because Dredd takes the structural weight of the comic allowing the rest of the characters to be freed from protagonism.

@@AnonEyeMouse And from what I can remember, he actually ages in real time. So one of his comics from 20 years ago, he is actually 20 years younger. The cryosleep or whatever process he goes into when he is off-duty keeps him healthy. So I would imagine if he actually did die, that would be the end of the Dredd comics (canon-wise at least, I'm sure he would probably be revived or come back somehow).

Such a fantastic film. Urban is incredible and I’m eternally grateful to him for this perfect portrayal of the character.

And unlike Stallone, Urban didn't feel the need to take his helmet off so everyone knew it was him

The budget for Dredd was about 45 million, and it made 41 million at the box office. Being a 3D movie was also why the whole "slo mo" effects were made that way, it was pretty impressive to watch on the big screen..

Another reason it didn't do so well was because cause it was released during the 3D movie craze when everything was 3D. People just saw it as a gimmick film and largely ignored it, also wasn't seen as a serious movie because of Stallone's version

This movie is the grandaddy of underappreciated remakes. It goes BIBLICALLY hard. And I agree, Lena Headey's performance of Ma-Ma was awesome. No cliche angry villain, no extended "the city will be mine" monologues. Just a psychopathic relentless businesswoman cold enough to make Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones look like the teacher from Matilda. Love you guys and finally THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REACTING TO THIS! There are not enough Dredd reactions on youtube. Not by a long shot.

@@stuartspencer2161 it was shot in proper 3D (2 cameras) rather than converted after the fact, which is why it looks so amazing. Jackass 3D also used proper 3D and phantom cameras, and looked similarly (yet completely differently) awesome.

This is one of my favourite movies. I absolutely love it and have watched it so many times. The fact that we never got a sequel is criminal

One of the best things I liked was even though I knew who was behind the mask, he never takes it off. He takes the mask off early but his face is covered in shadow. He isn’t just a man in a uniform… he is DREDD.

This film was, really, Alex Garlands first directorial feature, before ex machina. After writing the film to be his first directed feature, the studio didn’t want to let him direct for his lack of experience, so hired another director. That director even knew “I’m just here for the paperwork & studios worries, this is really YOU’RE movie. You direct”. Since then Karl Urban has been vocal about how this truly is Garlands film.

My wife and I did our part. We paid to go see it in the theaters and we bought it on Amazon, too. I sure hope they make a sequel.

Dredd casually throwing her right-hand man off the balcony after all of that gun fire is one of my favourite moments.

I get from a movie perspective wanting Dredd to be in jeopardy but as an old school 2000AD fan I love that they stayed true to the source materials Dredd doesn't fear dying he fears failing in his duty. So in the comic's the criminals harming civilians or escaping is usually the source of tension. Dredd is so feared that most criminals run for their lives as soon as he's spotted only the most psychotic burnt out nutter's try to fight.

I watched Stallone's Dredd back in the day. It was corny. Then I watched this one in the theaters and was blown away! A couple years ago I did a spring cleaning of my closet and come to find out, after saving tons of comics from the 80's and 90's.... I have lots of Judge Dredd comics! I never realized it! This movie is really true to the comics!

With an obese and pregnant sidekick, struggling through their secret love, hating the brutality of their jobs, and trying to take down the Justice Systems in part two: DREDD Two + 1: Oppressive 4Life. This movie will forever be criminally underrated! Very few movies deserve a sequel as much as this Dredd!

At 22:00 When you said they need him alive for the confession? No they don't. A Judge is just that. A Judge. The confession has already been heard in what passes for a court of law in Mega City One. He has already weighed the evidence and passed judgement. That's the entire point of Mega City's justice system. Crime and punishment was happening at a rate and sophistication that the justice system you and I are familiar with was no longer up to the task. Judge's were empowered to enforce the law AND act as the judiciary. When Dredd says we go on the attack because "Well. She's guilty. We're Judges." That is literally the legal system handing down its judgement. Judge Dredd's legendary statement, " I AM the law!" is literally true. Judge. Jury and, if necessary, executioner. So glad you enjoyed the movie. For many of us in the UK, 2000AD was our domestic counterpart of Marvel & DC. Though not as broadly popular. Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, A.B.C Warriors etc were as dear to our hearts as Captain America, The Hulk, Superman etc were to American audiences.

PSI Judge Anderson is from the original comics as well. She’s even had her own series at points. Great reaction!

Dredd is a great movie and a great adaptation of the comics. The fact that they didn't back off the gore and grit of megacity one. All the actors are just brilliant. Can we please get a Dredd series.

When I watched it in theatres, it was absolutely empty. I believe there were 3-4 other people besides myself and my mate. The movie was great, but crazy how timing works. It's release being in the summer when the Marvel Universe was top dog and still good. It's sad thing how many people slept on this great comic's film adaptation. (And personally my first comic).

I just noticed, when he's dealing with his bullet wound he's acting like he's doing a demonstration lol. "Open the quick release flap on your medkit, remove the first tool and cauterize the affected area""

Was super nervous about this one... but then it turned out to be ridiculously awesome. The overblown comic book violence with the slow mow giving you those comic book frames of blood splatter... and then adding that slow-mo hazy sparkle to it. Beautiful violence is exactly what it is. And Karl Urban being so completely dead pan, he's seen it all, nothing shocks him, is perfect. It's exactly what Dredd should be. And yes, this movie needs a God damn sequel. Lena Heady is absolutely terrifying as Mama. The shot is quick, so you may not have caught it, but it's her using her thumbs to destroy Domnhall Gleeson's eyes and then she has the cyber eyes put in so he can do the hacking stuff for her.

For years I have been begging people to watch this film. Underrated film by an underrated creator Alex Garland. Pete Travis is credited as the director but it was revealed that Garland basically directed it. He also wrote the screenplay.

Same. Its a bit like I keep telling pp they have to play Titanfall 2 for its campaign. Most ppl don't, but those that do absolutely love that game.

This is one of the greatest underrated movies of all time. It is so much better than I ever expected. Even if I went into this with high hopes it would have still outperformed them. This movie is just so well done and I love it. Plus it's also one of the 3D movies that actually has PHENOMENAL 3D visuals. So glad you wound up watching this and how you embraced the 'realism' with the gore. The Stallone 'Judge Dredd' movie is stupid fun, but this one is a legit GOOD movie.

Love this movie, Olivia Thirlby was also great as Judge Anderson. In an alternate universe we have a series of both Dredd and Anderson centric films, as well as other 2000AD IP like Strontium Dog, Slaine and Absalom (the Mashed KZread channel did a great animated short called Fight Night last year)

What a lot of people miss is when Mama's face hits the ground her blood sprays out into an X. This is such a great movie! We need part two NOW!!!

Karl Urban such an underrated actor.... He needs.. we need a Dredd sequel with him. Also suggested movies for future watching/reaction are The Crow stars the late brandon lee and the rocketeer and the Mask. C'mon guys, earlier 90's comic book films also had it's moments. WOuld love to see you guys watch/react those films.

It was also shot off an early version of the script for this movie that leaked whilst they were trying to arrange funding.

As a fan of the comics I love this film, it nails the tone of the world and the character of Dredd. Two other films were planned, the second was going to be based on the origins of the judges and the nuclear war. The third film was going to be about the Dark Judge, which is where the the comics go a little more into supernatural horror. The reason why these didn't go ahead is mainly down to bad marketing.

One of the things that Dredd is known for: He NEVER removes his helmet in the comics. Also, he is known to be uncompromising and tough. Not like in a Stallone way.. more like teak. He almost never struggles in a way that he needs to fight through anything. I personally want to see some of the stories from the comics actually made in to movies. Like the Judge Death story lines.

Apparently Gavin from Slowmo Guys was involved in the making of these slowmo shots. There weren't that many people who had experience with Phantom cameras back in 2012. He was involved with other movies as well, which I can't remember now.

For some reason the more subdued "I am the law" from this movie hits harder than the more bombastic one from Stallone. That one felt like your standard badass one-liner, this one feels like an statement of fact.

Yeah. This wasn’t Dredd. This was the system. Dredd an avatar of something larger and implacable. It’s terrifying as much as anything because you know the system doesn’t care about you even if it’s protecting you right now.

One of the most, if not THE most underrated movie of 2012, and probably the last decade. This thig still a masterpiece.

And yeah you're right; Ma-Ma was a brutal sociopath and a real villian, but she was also a tragic character, abused by the system. I credit both the script and the amazing acting of Heady for that. She really did an amazing job. All the cast did, really.

FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC! One of the best reactions either of you has ever done. YES this movie needs a sequel.... we NEED to see JUDGE DEATH on screen. It would follow the original comic series and feature the return of Judge Anderson. Let's start writing letters.... it needs to happen.

You probably know already, but Dredd 2 was supposed to feature Judge Death.

My friend Robert was one of the two costume designers for this. He helped come up with a more realistic take on the iconic costume. "Key principal costumer, Rob Allsopp, and Michael O'Connor always aimed to make the Dredd costume believable, but functional. The zippers had to be the right kind of metal zippers that you would find on a real motorcycle jacket. The leather used on the gloves had to be a certain weight and quality. The boots had to allow movement, but still give protection."

Funny, when I first saw the trailer, I hated the look of Dredd. But after seeing the movie.... it's so damn good! Loved every aspect this movie had! THIS MOVIE DESERVES A SEQUEL! Someone needs to start a petition to get the ball rolling!

Y'know, Urban said that the deep gravelly voice he used to play Dredd was like "a saw cutting through bone" and it was really hard for him to keep it up.

This is criminally underrated. They should have made a sequel straight after this.

Karl Urban's best work imo. This deserves a sequel/series. Its a great gritty movie that prove you don't need tons of CGI to be an incredible movie. Easily one of my all time favorites.

I love to watch anything that he’s in. I thought he did an awesome job in Red as well.

My favorite part of the movie: - "What happened in there?" - "Drug bust." As wild as the movie is, it's just another Tuesday. It's gonna be just like this tomorrow. Such great world-building in a single exchange of dialogue.

Probably the most criminally underrated movie in recent years. the other big one being John Carpenter's The Thing. Both have massive followings now, and a lot of people have been constantly pushing for a sequel to Dredd to be made for the last 11 years. it's slowly getting there. i hope it happens. One of the few flawless films to ever be made, and Dredd himself is far more interesting than any DC or Marvel could ever hope to be, he goes through a lot of development in the comics. if this movie came out a year or two later, it most likely would have done incredibly well, as the last obnoxious decade of Marvel movies started the year after this released. Glad you guys loved it.

Fun fact, there was a film called The Raid that can out weeks before this. Was a Asian film about a special forces group trying to arrest a gang leader from a block of flats. So unfortunately people said this was just a sci-fi version of that. I went to the cinema to see this and it was amazing, you can keep your MCU id pick this any day. Karl Urban also said he would of done a second film too but the film company's didn't. So sad Karl is fantastic as Dredd.

Karl Urban absolutely demolished this role!!!!!!! Still hoping for a sequel with the same judges, this world is too amazing to just leave at one movie. And for action movies to watch, Demolition Man for good 80's and Stallone acting and any Jackie Chan movie especially Mr Nice Guy and Who am I? Two of my favorite Jackie Chan movies

The plan was for Judge Cal and Judge Death to be the second and third Dredd movies. Karl even offered to fund them, but no studios wanted it. Kinda sad. There was even a plan to sell a Netflix series and remake this one as a season, then Cal for Season 2, then Death for Season 3.

It's really not that true to the comics at all. I still liked it a lot, but it's not like the comic.

The best movie that never had any success that it deserved. Finding this in the theatre literally felt like discovering a pirate's hidden treasure. When you see those mounted guns firing across the courtyard the first time it's just visceral, reflected diametrically when Dredd fires the incendiary round across the same view. Just brilliant cinematography.

What do you get when you mix The Raid + Die Hard together? You get DREDD! One of the best movie ever made, they got Dredd right so well with this and then...we got nothing afterwards. We should have gotten a trilogy damn it. There's still hope...rumours about a series with Karl Urban coming back have been making the rounds for the last 2 or 4 years now. Fingers Crossed. He and this movie deserve it.

Even though The Raid came out first, it's actually a rip-off. The director had started working on this first and then left and basically made his own version of it with The Raid. The Raid only released first because of the production delays with Dredd.

Yep, the Raid is a rip off, Dredd was in production 2 years before Raid, Dredds script got leaked online and lo and behold Raud scrapped what was made, completely restarted and rushed out their film.

I've loved Robocop since it came out but it's always been a rip off of Judge Dredd and the Raid is just a rip off of this film.

This was one of the few movies that came out during the 3D craze after Avatar that actually used the 3D elements in a beautiful and awesome way. It was amazing to see in the theater.

What I loved about this movie is by the end you realize, you just watched this universe's origin story for Hershey. When they flip that badge over and you see her name. I couldn't do anything but smile and clap. I don't know why I guess I just wasn't paying attention at the beginning, but it got nailed home when you see her last name on the badge.

Dredd and Master and Commander. Incredible films and it's an absolute tragedy they didn't get sequels.

The slo-mo bullet wounds were shot by filming the actors being blasted with compressed air in slow motion and then adding the bullets and blood with CGI.

That’s genius.

One thing I like about this movie is this is just an ordinary day for Dredd. Tomorrow he'll be in the middle of another insane action story and it'll also just be another day on the job.

My favorite part of this movie is Urban's Dredd being absolutely _made_ of one-liners that feel straight out of a comic panel.

I’ve watched this film countless times & I never get tired of it. You find out small new details/things every time. One of my favourite films.

The only movie I've ever see that was actually enhanced by being shown in 3d

The acting was phenomenal! The effects, costumes and cinematography was otherworldly! It’s a crime this didn’t get a sequel, I’m sad that 3D TVs aren’t exactly a thing anymore as I have this on 3D Blu-Ray but nonetheless this movie still holds up to this day!

Yeah, it was largely killed because they originally only released it in 3d (iirc). Couldn't see it at release if you didn't have one local.

This movie is BY FAR the most underrated dystopian Sci-Fi ever made! I love it!

I saw this in 3D at the cinema. Was stunning. That final scene with Ma Ma falling under the influence of SloMo absolutely blew my mind.

I like that he mentions the architecture since that style is actually called Brutalism. the Slow-mo also feels like it takes from that episode of the cowboy bebop anime where they deal with a drug called red eye. that heightens perception but made everyone else look slow while increasing reaction time.

This movie Dredd and The Nice Guys are my top two movies that deserve sequels the most

Lena heady is such a good villain in this movie, really shows how much of presence she can command on screen. very underrated movie, or like a cult classic at this point.

Urban was perfect. The directors would have had him take his helmet off but he refused. He knew the material. He knew who Dredd was.

The producers always planned for Dredd to keep the helmet on and Karl Urban agreed.

It’s worth noting that this was released in 3D in theaters, which was amazing

I love this film, I own this film and I watch it multiple times every year since its release. One of the best Graphic Novel adaptations!

I loved this film, saw it twice in the theater; it really did deserve a sequel.

My brother has been wanting a sequel for this movie since it came out. He's given copies of this film to everyone he knows who loves films, it's his go-to gift.

Fun fact: The Techie dude was played by Domhnall Gleeson, known for playing General Hux and Bill Weasley. He's the son of Brendan Gleeson, who played Mad Eye Moody

Lena heady's performance is amazing and it came mid game of thrones too which usually isnt a good indicator for performaces especially as the actor doent usually have that much time in between shooting to properly get into character .

I really feel like Karl Urban doesn't get the credit he deserves from a lot of people, I've loved him in every role I've seen him in.

I feel like Karl Urban is so underrated. He is so good in this role as well as many others.

Dredd is one of Urban's best roles.

To me, I think Karl Urban nailed Dredd character like Heath Ledger nailed Joker 🃏 character. So far I can’t think of anyone else who could replace him for the role. Dredd is the movie I went to watch with zero expectation (after watching Judge Dredd when I was a kid), and being amazed and impressed by it with no words 😶 that can truly be able to describe or even express how great 👍 the movie was. Everything was done right to make audiences feel and know that it’s a comic antihero movie and that’s how it was supposed to be made into a film. Just a simple thing that most film people knew, yet somehow often easily failed to deliver. Unfortunately, not many people or the general audience/public know how to appreciate this kind of movie, making it unpopular or underrated when the movie was released 😤 The budget for Dredd was about 45mil. They only made around 41mil at box office during that time. It’s so unreal and unimaginable that this kind of quality and top-notch production film could made such losses. If Dredd was to be released now in present day, it could easily exceed 100mil at box office, should the marketing strategies executed/done right😊

This is one of those movies that looked incredible in 3D in the cinema! I didn't really know what I was in for at the time (I hadn't even seen the first one at the time), but I was thoroughly impressed!

This, Avatar and Tron: Legacy were pretty much the only films to ever really use the 3d the way it was meant to be used, not as a gimmick, but to just give the world actual depth.

@@mycroft16 They were both great in 3D but not nearly the only ones. Avatar (and way of water) and Gravity are the two that must be seen in 3D. But there are plenty of others that are notably better in 3D like Dr. Strange and Pacific Rim along with a number of animated movies like How to Train Your Dragon.

Thanks for letting me re-live one of the greatest action films ever made. Hollywood + Mr Urban should have made 10 of these.

the slo mo scenes are absolutely BONKERS in 3D, seeing that in theaters was awesome

This was SUCH a great (and massively under-appreciated) movie! Thanks for bringing it to more people's attention. Not only is the cinematography great, but holy CRAP the sound design is just phenomenal!

It's a crime this masterpiece didn't get a sequel. That's 20 years in the iso-cubes, mandatory.

Aw that must’ve been SO DOPE! I have DVD & Digital & this is one of those movies that seems timeless & I can watch it 100s of times & never get bored - not many movies I can say that about kudos dude💯🫶🏼

This movie is visually stellar in 3D, especially the 'slow-mo' drug scenes. It is high on the list of under-known movies. It is really one of the best action movies of the last 20 years.

Its an incredibly understated film that is becoming a classic in its own right.

This is one of those movies that i can watch over and over and still enjoy evey minute of it. Its as close to a perfect movie as you can get.

I was lucky enough to see this in 3D in the cinema. The last slow mo scene where Lena fell had me climbing up the back of the seat. It was a beautifully shot, brilliant film. It is a crime that it didn't get a sequel. Karl Urban is the finest chin actor I have ever seen.

I bought the bluray years ago in a Walmart bargain bin...i didn't realize, or care, that it had a 3d bluray in it. Found out my refurbished projector had 3d...watched it in 3d...fantastic.

Karl freaking Urban, man.... from soap opera boy doll, to fantasy knight, to space doctor, to policeman... that guy literally goes places.

In interviews, Garland said "Slo-Mo" was inspired by the high-speed photography of nature documentaries: “Can you make violence into something which is purely aesthetic? Can it be so abstract that it becomes genuinely beautiful?”

Dredd, John Wick (Chapter 1 only) and Mad Max Fury Road are my top action films of the 2010s

One of the most underrated comic book movies of all time and action movies in the last decade

Dredd is there so the characters around him can have a story without having to be the pressure of needing to be the hero who saves the day. Dredd does not fear death. He's a more down to earth version of the Doomslayer.

Dredd bombed because everyone still remembered the Stallone Dredd. They didn't give it a chance. This movie was so damn good, it should have been nominated for best picture! Mad Max: Fury Road was the same thing... lots of action, lots of violence, and won a ton of Oscars. I wish you two could have seen this movie in 3D. It was one of the most beautiful 3D movies I have ever seen.

One of the most under appreciated movies of all times.

This movie had the best-executed 3D I've ever seen. It was jaw-dropping in the theater, especially the early scene where Dredd and Anderson raid the apartment.

Dredd was phenomenal, period. The word I use to describe it to people I recommend it to is " visceral". The only thing Judge Dredd had going for it was meme-worthy lines... Well, also Diane Lane. The crime here besides it not getting a sequel is when people ask me what my favorite comicbook movie is I say Dredd, and they always say they haven't seen it or even heard of it.

This movie was filmed with 3D digital HD cameras.They even used a new 3d hand held camera specifically designed for close-ups. I saw it in the theater in 3D and it was absolutely amazing! The slow mo scenes, especially Mama in the bathtub looked unreal! Also, when the Mama clan kills the three drug dealers, the bodies land near Karen (lady with the baby carriage), who was the same woman who's apartment they hid in and who's husband Anderson killed.

Phantom cameras were used for all the slow motion shots. There's a whole behind the scenes thing on the DVD commentary. Really interesting.

This has been one of my fave moments & when I officially fell in love with Karl Urban- so when I saw you’d watched Judge Dredd- it was soooo comically inaccurate - cos sly wouldn’t keep his helmet on- Karl Urban is GORGEOUS but had enough respect for the source material to not only keep his helmet on the entire movie - he conveys so much using just the lower part of his face & his voice 💯❤️‍🩹 Also the shots where they’re taking Slo-Mo are BEAUTIFUL- wait for the climax lads you’re gonna have nipple chills - full body goosebumps- so happy to see y’all watching this version thank you for your content - much love from a UK comic geek 💯😜🫶🏼

I also have the Dredd DC comics & LOVE KARL URBAN IN THE BOYS! Another epic DC comics (Garth Ennis is 1 of the BEST Preacher, Constantine, The Boys, some of the Dredd comics & many more) bit of a fan & collect the comics figures etc; I’m basically a 40 yr old kid & I only learnt how much I appreciated & fell in love with comics (Apart from The Crow Graphic Novel & the movie is my fave alltime movie) but from Dredd to Billy Butcher Karl Urban is EPIC AF💯😜

Karl has said he would have refused the role if they wanted him to take the helmet off. He is a Judge Dredd / 2000AD reader and fan. It goes beyond respect for the source material. He does it the way we want because he is one of us.

Dredd has to be one of my favorite movies. Despite being 12~ years old, the atmosphere still holds up very well today. The grim and grid are done so well in this dystopian world and you just get sucked into it. I also enjoy the team relationship they have. No love story or anything, just a badass shoot'em up.

If you're watching Dredd, go watch Sunshine (2007). Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. It's great.
