I came across the church in 1981 in Sacramento when I was 24, and did not believe the Joseph Smith story. It was too far-fetched. But I also knew a lot of members of the church, and they were the best people I knew. A conflict grew within me: how do these people, whom I respect and admire, believe this incredible story? I was not a religious person, and didn't feel the urge to join any church. But this conflict within me grew and started to really bother me. I decided to investigate, and was led to Moroni's promise. After months of praying and attending sporadically, and not receiving anything that I would call a "witness", a returned missionary sat me down and we discussed what was meant by "sincere heart, with real intent" - and I began to really focus on my prayers. Three weeks later I received a manifestation of the Spirit that can only come from God. It filled me with joy, peace and comfort - and I KNEW Joseph did indeed translate an ancient record. Five days later I asked to go on a mission. Today I am still a witness that God loves us much more than we realize, and He does answer prayers, and that the restoration occurred, there are living prophets today, and I am so incredibly blessed to receive this knowledge. Praise be to God!

What an awesome presentation of glorious events! The book of Mormon is truly a marvelous work and a wonder, and I am thankful for the prophets, and the Lord. I was about 14, I read the New Testament and felt a need for baptism, I opened a phone book in August, 1999, and called various churches, and the name of the Church drew me to it, as well as 1 single encounter with 2 young Elders showing the students in my school the Lamb of God video on VHS! My 1st meeting with the missionaries was much like my first time going to the Church; I felt a love that I felt at home, and these people were truly Christ like. I have been reading a bit more consistently lately and I'm very thankful for this record and am in the process of renewing my testimony of it. May the hearts of God's children be softened and touched by the Spirit of the Lord with the truthfulness of this record.

I was born in the covenant & I was riding on my parents coattails. I hated going to Church hearing these unbelievable testimonies because I never had one & doesn’t the Lord love me? I left the Church when I was 16 & 20yrs later I gained a strong testimony of the Book of Mormon. I had a bunch of mental problems & I about ended someone’s life. I hated how I felt & scared that charges would be placed on me. I took a dusty BoM of the shelf & prayed. I was blaming the Lord for making me feel this way & I wanted this feeling removed. When I got done praying I opened my eyes & the BoM was opened. There highlighted was the answer to my prayer, 3rd Nephi 11:29-30. When I was reading I felt the Lord speaking to me & when I read the last word away I felt the hand of the Lord remove all that anger from me 20yrs ago. I started going back to Church & no charges were placed on me. I’ve been blessed beyond measure after coming back to the fold & following the Lord. I learned from the Lord that I was Spiritually sick not mentally that Drs diagnosed me as. I was in & out of Mental Hospitals. I was bullied & abused growing up. I had night terrors, hearing voices, suicidal & I was a very violent person. I listened to the Lord & He helped me get off all medications. I even stopped seeing Therapists because they wouldn’t teach me Gospel Principles that I understood. I tell others that the Lord is my Therapist & His Gospel are my Meds. I never been happier. Meds only drugged me up to not act out but I was still suffering on the inside & only God can heal us Spiritually. Also I found out I have a reaction to most Meds that makes me violent. Prayfully seek the right help & listen to the Lord. If he wanted me to still be on Meds I would be but He has blessed me & it all started from the power of the Book of Mormon.

There is no record that Joseph, or Oliver Cowdery, ever said he read the words off a stone in a hat. Joseph only said he used the "nephite interpreter" ,later referred to as the Urim and Thummin, AND by the gift and power of God . So where did the idea he "read words off a stone in a hat" come from? The original sources of this theory appear to come from not so reliable individuals and even a derogatory 1830 publication. Yet, due to revisionist history, this theory is now promoted as absolute fact. If Joseph never said he read the words from a stone in a hat, then that theory would have to be speculation or purposeful distortion of the originators. Revisionist history gives equal validity to all sources even if highly questionable or even untrue. So its important for everyone to study and know the history or the history. After I spent over 2 years doing just that I came to the same conclusion that the Joseph Smith Foundation did.... simply, Joseph translated the plates by the gift and power of God using the interpreting tools given to him with the plates.

My great grandparents joined the Church in England many years before I was born. They planned on going to the States, but their plans were interrupted by WW I. My great grandfather was drafted in the Army of the United Kingdom and was shipped to France where he was killed by a sniper. After several years, my great grandmother purchased passage on a ship bound to the United States. She had 5 children in tow on the boat and then to Ellis Island for the documents needed to stay in the United States. All was well until my grandfather contacted some type of Flu and they were not permitted to leave until my grandfather was well. They had planned to go to Utah, but due to the delay, much of their reserve had been spent to take care of my grandfather. Instead, they decided to settle in Indiana where my great grandmother's sister's family lived. My father was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Several years later, my grandfather was called as the District President. Shortly after that, the District was divided into 2 stakes. My grandfather was the first stake president of one of the stakes. My mother was not a member of the Church, mainly, because her father didn't want her to join a "Church of the Devil". She went to Church regularly. She was introduced to the Church by a neighbor, that I got to know him as my Uncle. When my mother turned eighteen, she joined the Church. My "Uncle" and my grandfather connived to have my mother contact my father during a break in Stake Conference in 1943. The were introduced and married within 2 weeks of getting married. However, their married life was broken up due to WWII. My father joined the Navy and became a U.S. Navy Corpsman on a submarine. I was born in Aiea Heights, Honolulu Hawaii inn 1947 after the war was over. My father decided to stay in the Military, so we travelled a bit. My mother was my Primary teacher while, in many places, my father was a Group Leader on base and sometimes in our home. When I turned 8, we were living in Landstuhl, Germany. The only place for a baptismal fount was by train in another city. My father baptized me and confirmed me a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am very lucky to have parents that are members of the Church. My father ordained me a Deacon, a Teacher, and a Priest and taught me many wonderful things. I served a Mission in Montevideo, Uruguay and was married in a Temple. I have studied the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Bible's Old and New Testament, and the Pearl of Great Price. With Satan's temptations all around me to tell me the fallacy of my beliefs. I continue to pray and worship Him, who gave us his all so we may return to Our Father In Heaven. Thank you so much for this presentation.

The process of FAITH is as follows: F - Recognize that God is the your "FATHER", the only true God, and that he loves you deeply. A - "Ask" your father, humbly, in the name of Christ. This is a formula for tricking yourself into believing. You start with the conclusion and look for anything you can to make that conclusion real. Maybe, instead, try asking yourself what would make this conclusion false...and exhaustively run those tests. If it's Truth it'll stand up to tests against it being false. If you come up with no externally verifiable ways to test for falsehood...then it's unfalsifiable. If it's unfalsifiable then the truth cannot be known. In that case, why believe?

@@SpartacusMA1 I see your point Michael, but know that both LDS and FLDS believe that the BofM was divinely inspired; as do many that adhere to neither "religion". So the test is still valid in that a person can come to know of the books truthfulness via the process previously posted. Gods promise will work for all people, regardless of their current belief, if they search the BofM with a "sincere heart and "true intent" (Moroni 10:3-5). Don't get me wrong, its not a trite process. As life's events can contradict and confuse, some work for years reading, studying, praying and asking questions before they settle on a conclusion. I believe this represents the "TRIAL" part of the process ("the LORD trieth the hearts..." Proverbs 17:3). As for Warren Jeffs, I'm glad you where not deceived.

Have you seen Jesus Christ? Likely not. So what is the nature of your assurance that He actually existed and lives still? The things of the spirit are understood and known by the spirit. The "proof" of the Book of Mormon is found in Moroni's promise in the last chapter of the book of Moroni at the very end of the Book of Mormon. Historical evidence is good, but it does not convert one's soul to the truth.

While containing much useful information, this video contains some serious errors and omissions about the translation. Just after 13:00 it states that the pages which were to be lost by Martin Harris were translated using both the seerstone as well as the Urim & Thummim interpreters which came with the plates. This is directly contradicted by Emma Smith, who in an 1870 letter which is the only writing directly from her on the translation clearly stated that the lost pages were translated using the Urim & Thummim, with the seerstone only used for later translation. Note here that Emma was replaced by Oliver for the later translation, so the second part of that claim is only hearsay. But she was a scribe for the translation of the lost pages, and stated that part used the Urim & Thummim with the seerstone only used later (the hearsay part of the letter). Also important to note is that the video tries to blur the distinction between the Urim & Thummim and the seerstone, implying that they were referred to and used interchangeably. However, in the referenced letter from Emma, she used the term "Urim & Thummim" only to refer to the Nephite interpreters, and referred to the seerstone as a separate object. Since Emma was replaced by Oliver Cowdery as the scribe for the Book of Mormon we have today after the loss of the lost pages which she scribed, Oliver is the better source for how the Book of Mormon we have today was translated. And he and Joseph left numerous written published statements ascribing the translation to the Nephite interpreters, not the seerstone. This is illustrated by the quote at 16:00 which has an ellipsis in the middle. This ellipsis is not for length, but to hide the fact that the few omitted words are "as he translated with the Urim & Thummim, or, as the Nephites would have said, "Interpreters," ... which, of course, completely contradicts the video's implication that any part of the Book of Mormon was translated using the seerstone. For an accurate historically based account of the translation, see the new book "By Means of the Urim & Thummim: Restoring Translation to the Restoration."

It makes me sad that anyone would believe that an all-enlightened being who was reported to have just uttered the words at his death, "forgive them", etc, and after reportedly experiencing exactly what it is like to be every person ever born (how and why they think the way they do, their lack of understanding, their culture, their poverty, illiteracy and ignorance, their poorly evolved/inherented brain genetics, poor nutrition, their poor parental upbringing, etc) would turnaround and deal with thse backward ancient humans by reportedly descending from heaven, killing them in such abhorrent ways (3 Nephi 8-9..And behold I ((Jesus)) burned, sunk, buried, etc, ~14 cities) for finite sins, instead of through meeting with them in person and educating and rehabilitating them in love and with a perfect example and perfect understanding. He's right back to Old Testament God after feeling what it's like and how hard it is to be mortal himself and suffering everyone's infirmities and dying and going to heaven and then coming back. And he lets his wrath out, not upon the Romans who actually knew he was a real person, but instead upon people on the other side of the world who only had faith to go on. 3 hours of Darkness for one side. Three days of complete darkness on the other. Hmm. And natural disasters kill indiscriminately. They don't just kill bad people and spare "the more righteous part of the people". And if they did, that opens up more problems to deal with. Plus all people are a mixture of righteous and unrighteous. You can't just blanket statement say the wicked were killed and the righteous were spared. I've heard all the apologetics trying to say why it's all OK. None of them make it ok or make sense and open up to even more questions that make all the said events even less believable. I'm sure this comment will be hidden because people don't like their claims to have to compete in the marketplace of ideas.

I'm confused -- is he an "angel" or a spirit? Either way, if some angel or some guy who died came to me and gave me anything or said anything to me, I would TEST him to see if he was of God or not. 1John 4:1-3 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Furthermore, he had better preach the same thing that Jesus Christ did... Galatians 1:8 & 9 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Now this begs the question, did Moroni bring the exact same gospel of Christ, or was he accursed? Is there ANY record of Moroni being tested? And is his gospel identical to Christs? Another HUGE problem: Most, if not all, churches of the time were preaching this blessed gospel. They had AND acknowledge the Everlasting Covenant that Jesus Christ is the Mediator of. 1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Romans 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. See Galatians chapter 3 especially this part... 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. 19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. This new covenant erases our sins and makes us His people. Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Jesus said... Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, *the Almighty.* Rev 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. Rev 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. Rev 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and *I will be his God,* and he shall be my son. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. So far, NONE of the places in the Book of Mormon have been identified. There is no known evidence for any of it? 19:41 In a way, John the Baptist preached against the Aaronic priesthood. John's baptism was one of repentance (Jesus did not need to repent), the forgiveness of sins, and of water. Jesus' baptism was "with the Holy Spirit and fire". John recognized that the baptisms were to advertise and prepare for the Christ of God and that Jesus was to be a high priest after the order of Melchisedec/Melchizedek not Aaron because His order is eternal, and "he was the priest of the most high God." Heb 5:10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Psa 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Heb 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Heb 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. Heb 7:21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) Heb 7:22 *By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. * Aaron was flawed, and was a man. He died in his sins and he needed a Savior. Holy Christ was perfect and eternal. Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Heb 7:28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. I wonder why Smith didn't claim it was Moses or Aaron who gave him the supposed authority? or why he did not claim that Melchisedec had appeared instead of John the Baptist?

There are good teachings in this book but I think the mention of how the angels "took the book away" and he had to go back for for years to get it adds to the assertion there were no physical plates and that he channeled the material spiritually. If the church would just admit that he channeled it from angels instead of found a mysterious book that could not have existed by all evidence then I think a lot more people could accept it instead of the plates being a barrier.

The plates were real but I am curious what your "evidence" is that they weren't. The assertion that there aren't plates is 100% false.

There is zero evidence for the Bom being historical. For example, look at the actual 'reformed Egyptian' characters....it is just English letters with some extra twirls. In no way Egyptian. Furthermore' reformed Egyptian' isn't a language. Also long histories on gold plates have never happened in the ancient world. Furthermore all the 200 plus anarchisms. Furthermore, the plates just disappeared so no one could see em. And the handful of people who signed were all friends or related to JS so that doesn't prove anything. Look at the book of Abraham or the Kinderhook plates the church took as dogma until the 70s....JS said he could translate things then fast forward it is clear it was a hoax- same with the BoM.

The book of Jacob in the Bible, both contradict Joseph’s one DNC 132, that he wrote to try to excuse his many affairs that he had already started with before he wrote down this doctrine. He had his affair with Fanny Alger, his adopted daughter, as witnessed by Oliver, years before his supposed revelation of polygamy. Which is interesting, that he claims that he asked why God justified Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in polygamy, because that is simply not God never justified any of that. The Bible says to be the husband of one wife, which was Emma’s understanding of their marriage, because of course it was, until Joseph threatened her to stop complaining in his doctrine, and covenants 132. He blackmailed her with destruction if she complained about his affairs with their daughters and other girls and women!

There’s also another layer when you consider the deception in the fact that for 100 years your church drew up official depictions of justice translation process, and what are in those the pictures? Joseph, looking through spectacles that your church called the ermine Tamil at plates to translate, and your church didn’t admit, until recently, until the cat was already out of the bag, and they had to confront the fax, that was, Joseph Smith actually did was put his magic seer/squire/peeping/treasure, digging stone into a hat, and cleaned to translate when the reality is that he was just a good storyteller, he told many stories to his mom long before he supposedly found his plates, and that golden plates are basically his masterpiece of slippery treasure fraud. Nobody saw these golden plates, because they didn’t exist.

Personally I just don't believe Smith's story about the plates. Same with the whole book of Mormon, it's nothing more than Smith's imagination run riot. I've read the book & I came to the church of the LDS with no preset idea's other than to seek knowledge & find out as much as possible & take it from there. I'm English & I genuinely didn't know anything about the Mormon faith. It's quite a story & I'd recommend people read everything available before making their decision. Thank you.

I disagree with your Premise about “Proof” There’s loads of “Proof” but not so much that it isn’t supposed to remain in the realm of faith. The resurrection cannot be “Proven “ for instance! The information that leads to knowledge of the Book of Mormon being what it claims to be is easily enough found. To switch the question around you also need to answer what the book is if not what it claims to be and how it came to be. Every witness proclaimed it to be divine even those who left the church and suffered in there lives for continuing the so called “Fraud” of the Book. A massive exposure of its fakeness would surely be easy to do and find. However this is not the case. Truth does not need proven but does need to be discovered 🙏

This was a good podcast and I enjoyed it except for the stone in the hat. This is not correct history. What happened to the Urim and Thummim that was taught when I was a young girl? The stone in the hat was never talked about until a few years ago. Any mention of that theory only came after Joseph Smith was dead and started by David Whitmer, a man who apostasized and never returned to the Church. Oliver Cowdery, who was the main scribe, never spoke or wrote about a stone in the hat, only the Urim and Thummim and the Power of God were used to translate the Book of Mormon. Any mention of the stone in the hat happened in the latter part of the 19th century, after the death of Joseph and Oliver. I have spent several years researching this topic and I still believe that the stone in the hat is not correct history.

I agree Kimberly... unless the stone Joseph used was actually one of the stones out of the Urim and Thummim that the Jaredites had. Remember that the "specticles" where so large that they covered the entirety of a mans face. Using one stone at a time would only be particle.

I recently read Mosiah 8:13-18. It talks about the gift of seers, which we know Joseph was a seer. Mosiah 7:18 is particularly interesting to me because of what I have heard about how Joseph couldn't translate if he was upset.

The most self defeating thing in this situation is God taking the plates back after the translation was done. God would have done the religion a great favor if he had let Joseph/the church keep the plates. Unfortunately God isn't a huge fan of proof. He wants people to know about him, but not to any conclusive degree.

Or maybe, hear me out, it isn’t true. I was a member for 45 years and I can’t say it was an easy conclusion to come to but it just isn’t true. We have the book of Abraham text and it shows Joseph’s translation was wrong there. No reason to believe that if we had the plates that it would match the text of the Book of Mormon.

@@bgardunia The narrative about the translation of the Book of Abraham that many critics of our church like to say is based on a false idea of what Joseph Smith used to translate it. When he bought the scroll that had the Book of Abraham on it he also bought multiple other pieces of papyrus. After Joseph Smith died, all that went to his mother and after she died, Emma got rid of them immediately and sold them to a man named Arthur Combs. He sold some of it and it went to the Chicago museum which burned down in the 1871 Chicago fire. The papyrus we have now are a separate set of papyrus that were mounted in glass and were passed down to Arthur Comb's caretaker in 1892 Philadelphia. The caretaker's son-in-law sold it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1946. It was then discovered by a University of Utah professor in 1966. And he helped to get those back to the Church in 1967. Why did I tell you the history of the papyrus? Because Joseph Smith in his journal described the papyri he used in translation "The record found with the mummies is beautifully written on papyrus, with black, and a small part red, ink or paint in perfect preservation." There is even an account that it was pretty long. The papyrus mounted in glass or what is The Book of Breathings papyrus which has no writing in red ink and is in an extremely poor state of preservation, nothing like what is described. And considering most of you guys point out that Joseph Smith filled in what the papyrus should have looked like wrong (which wasn't even him, he asked someone else to do it) and you can see some of the same damage in the pictures which we put for the facsimiles then it must have been in a similar condition when Joseph Smith had them. The papyrus we have today is in no way, shape or form what Joseph Smith used when he translated the Book of Abraham from both details by Joseph Smith himself of what he said the papyrus the Book of Abraham looked like vs what the book of breathings we have looks like and the fact it doesn’t translate to the Book of Abraham. To even add further on this, there are many details that are in the Book of Abraham about Abraham that are not said in the Bible and were not known in Joseph Smith's day but have later been corroborated by ancient text that have been found like the Dead Sea Scrolls. Details about Abraham's father, Abraham almost being sacrificed to the Egyptian gods, that God saved him from being sacrificed, that God was the reason why Abraham called his wife his sister, etc. Pretty interesting that if Joseph Smith "made up" the Book of Abraham that it has been confirmed to be pretty historically accurate about Abraham. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, our Lord and our Savior and only in His name and through Him are our sins forgiven and removed so that we can be spotless before God. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is God's and Jesus Christ one and only true church here on earth. The Book of Mormon and Book of Abraham are true historical scriptures and Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. No criticism against us can stand against scrutiny. Rejoin God and Jesus Christ in their Kingdom and rejoin their true church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and learn all that they have to offer. Learn of their glory and mercy, learn of the plan they have of you.
