When my younger son was 5 in 1980, he heard "Pretty Woman" on a recording I had. He listened to it over and over then started singing it to me because I was his pretty mama. He is almost 44 and now he sings it to his lovely wife. What a great and memorable song, from a great and memorable singer.

Well I have to write something!! Roy Orbison, was, is, and always will be my favorite singer, from day one. All the way back to ooby dooby. I left home in July 64' to join the Marine Corps and in August I get a letter from my best Friend Marty who said that Roy gave a concert in Bismarck, North Dakota. I was born in Mandan just across the Missouri River from Bismarck. He said that Roy said that he had a song that he wanted to sing to see if he should put it out on record. He brought the house down, my buddy said people were screaming and carrying on. As they say the rest is history. Naturally my one chance to see me favorite singer didn't happen though I'm satisfied knowing I hitched my star to a GIANT. I saw this when Jamie aired it and when I saw this on You Tube I had to watch and then say something.

The engineer at Sun Records told Roy he'd never make it as a ballad singer because there were already too many great ballad singers out there. Naturally, Roy left Sun, as did Johnny Cash, Sam Phillips sold Elvis's record contract, Carl Perkins had a really bad car accident, and Jerry Lee Lewis's wife told the press, when she was like thirteen at the airport in England that she wasn't his daughter or niece, that she was his wife. Basically, along with Jerry's antics, that destroyed his career for quite some time after that. She was also his cousin. Can you imagine, along with Roy what a HUGE amount of money Sun Records would have made if those guys all had stayed there and recorded for Sam Phillips during their STELLAR careers. OMG! It staggers the imagination. R.I.P. Roy, we love ya.

I live in Odessa Texas. Roy Orbison lived in a little town of Wink Texas. He had a TV Show EVERY weekend sponsered by Pioneer Furniture. He sang with a group called The Tean Kings. They would do dances around the area of Kermit,Tx, Jal NM, Odessa Tx, and anywhere they could play on the weekend. Saw him when you paid .25 to 1.00 to see him. Funniest thing is that they replaced him "get this" they felt he wasn't good enough to sing in the band. (Now this is from my brother that knew his bass player Jack)

I believe Buddy Holly was more instrumental in setting out Roy along a recording career than Johnny Cash.It was Buddy who introduced Roy and his group the Teen Kings to his Manager Norman Petty who recorded them in 1955 at his studio in Clovis . ‘Ooby Dooby ‘and ‘Tryin’ to get to you ‘were both released on the local JE -WELL label and later re recorded at SUN records. These early recordings are excellent Rockabilly .Prior to this there is a Columbia demo by Roy from 1954 ‘Hey Miss Fanny’ based on a Clovers original
