The Different Types of Respirator Masks and Common Uses

It's important to choose the right respirator mask as it's crucial to the health and safety of you and your crew on the job. In this video, you'll learn more about the types of respirators, the common uses for each and the level of protection each provides.
The different types of respirators are:
- The Half-mask, also known as particulate or disposable respirators

Starting with the disposable respirators. These are used to protect the wearer from dust, pollen, mists, welding fumes and certain pesticides applied in solid form. These masks provide a 10 X PEL level of protection.
The 10 X PEL refers to the assigned protection factors or APF of the respirators. A respirator with an APF of 10 - that is properly selected, fitted and worn - will protect the employee from exposure levels up to 10 times the permissible exposure level - PEL. Which is the exposure level deemed to be dangerous by OSHA. So you'll need a respirator with a higher PEL, depending on what is in the air the wearer needs protection from.
Moving to the Maintenance-Free, Dual Cartridge, Half-Mask, Disposable Respirators, these are best used when applying pesticides or organic vapors. And because they're disposable, there's no cartridge inventory to maintain.
These also have a 10 X PEL range
Dual Cartridge, Half-Mask Reusable Respirators
The main advantage of these are that cartridges and filters can be changed to match different contaminants.
These respirators are commonly used for protection against pesticides, anhydrous ammonia, acid gases, dust or welding fumes.
These too have a 10 X PEL.
The full-face dual cartridge, reusable respirator is more protective than a half-mask. You'll need a full-face dual cartridge respirator to protect the face, eyes, nose and respiratory system from irritants and contaminants.
These respirators have a 50 X PEL.
Moving to the Powered air-purifying respirators, these offer comfortable breathing from a battery-powered fan, which pulls air through the filters and circulates the air through the helmet.
These types of respirators are NOT to be used in conditions which are immediately dangerous to life or health.
These respirators have a 100 X PEL
Those are the different types of respirators and examples of when you'd use each. If you're still unsure which respirator you need, contact Gemplers Customer Service at (800) 382-8437 or email customerservice@gemplers.com.

How long do the cartridges last and how do you know when they need to be replaced?

Hi Lolo! There isn't a cartridge/filter type respirator that will protect against all of the chemical hazards in car exhaust or cigarette smoke. You would need a supplied air respirator set up for full protection. As for pesticides, the type of respirator required varies from pesticide to pesticide and you need to check the product documentation to know for sure. The pesticide label will list any required respiratory protection for application of the product. The safety data sheet (SDS) will provide a person with respirator requirements for situations where they are exposed to large amounts, such as a large spill or fire.
