I want to say that baritone would be closer to euphonium because an actual BRASS baritone is a smaller version of the euphonium. I don't know what a brass baritone sounds like compared to a euphonium, but I know that they are similar.

As a main instrument, I play the Tenor. I have only played the alto like 3 times and I'd say that the only that was different, was that it was easier to growl on the alto. But that was just my experience
Both the Tenor and Alto Saxophones can hit high notes, and they can both reach somewhat deep notes, but the Tenor is deeper and thicker as you described, while the alto is higher and sharper. The Tenor's notes are more like those of a higher voiced male, while the Alto's notes are more like those of a female voice. I can understand why some people prefer the Tenor, I myself sometimes have trouble in asking myself why I generally prefer the Alto, but yeah I personally prefer the Alto, although I think I prefer the deeper notes of the Alto more than the higher notes which probably explains why I sometimes ask myself why I prefer the Alto.
Hello, aspiring saxophone player here. Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues sparked my love of jazz.....I found my way here by a random Google search but I believe I may have found my foundation of my journey to finally go after my aspirations. I think I will be leaning toward the tenor sax. I was a tenor in the choir when I was a teenager. Thank you and looking forward to learning more! First, I have to acquire my tool....
Thank you for the discourse. Not only was the information itself informative to me--an older person who’s wanting to begin with saxophone and already thinking that tenor is what I want to sound like--but your presentation of your own personality was very pleasant to witness. I admire your ease and fluidity in speaking in front of a camera. You seem to be a good-natured person. Thanks.
Tenor is better in my opinion. It feels like a thicker sound and my ears are sensitive to the high notes on the alto
This was a great video. I play soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, and I love them all!
Very nicely detailed comparison of alto vs tenor. Gave me the answers as to why I'm immediately attracted to the Tenor with "fly me to the moon" and alto sounded a bit different but couldn't describe. Thanks man. Take care!
Thanks for the channel, you might become the reason why I begin learning sax. Seven blessings mate

I started playing flute in sixth grade when I switched schools but at the end of seventh grade I decided I wanted to be in jazz band so I spent of summer learning alto. When I auditioned my teacher said I did great but there were a lot of altos already so I got moved to tenor. Now I play tenor in high school band, jazz, and pep band. I like the sound a lot better than the alto

Great video. I'm a composer and found this video while searching for the specific differences between saxophones. I think it would be a great help if you made another video about the differences between bari/bass and soprano sax, not only for people who want to play the instruments, but also for people like me who want to write for them. Woodwinds in general are seriously misunderstood by most composers!

+Faith Crawford Yes - gender really should not be the criteria for which horn someone should play but how they sound on the respective horns and personal preference. I know a guy who just doesn't like his tone on tenor so stays with alto. I think what James was driving at in his video was how, in general, the tone sounds. Alto higher (like female), Tenor (lower like male). But that is much different than gendering the respective saxaphones (e.g Alto sax for women, Tenor for men). He was trying to give people a flavour for how the TONE differs not which sex should play which horn.

Hi, i wanna ask a question. I'm going to get my first saxophone. I prefer the tenor to the alto, but I don't know if it is a good idea to begin from a tenor. So in comparison, would you have to have a more open throat when playing something like a low D on Tenor than Alto? Or does the note naturally have the same ombechure and just comes out in a different tone? Just wondering...

You actually have to blow deeper on a tenor than an alto sax, the same way that you have to tight softer the reed when playing the same notes on an alto (at least thats what i've experienced)

I just started playing tenor today, transitioning from alto BTW, and you need to supply way more air to a tenor rather than the alto, or you won't get the sound you want. After further adjustments you make to how much air you supply and experimenting with different more comfortable ambertures (sorry for my spelling), you can practice with dynamics, piano, metso forte, forte, etc. I hope I helped in some way with this ❤

Hans I was an alto but recently upgraded in my opinion alto is kinda bad:
@postylol2368
4 жыл бұрын
I just got upgraded to a tenor but I still play alto don’t worry
The question is not what instrument you like, but what sound you want to achieve. That should answer it. People often pick one over the other because of looks, style, what other people think about it, what other artists play, etc... when you should just answer the question what music you want to make. I love the sound of both. And both have their place. But I choose the alto (for now), because I wanted to play (mostly) the higher register kind of music. What doesn't mean you can't play low notes or subtones on an alto to change it up a little. Don't worry too much, you'll buy both eventually anyway :D
Personal experience play tenor early so you are the only one and get all the solos for it. Haha! However on a more serious note tenor has a more jazzier sound in my opinion I played alto for roughly 3 years than switched to tenor for 2 years now but yeah it's totally up to you
I was hoping to hear a sample of each played... do you have a video where you play both to show the difference in the sound?
Depends on context...Fusion bands like Spyro Gyra, David Sanborn and older Kenny Gorlick tend to play more alto. Blues and standard jazz are more appropriate on Tenor. I use alto for fusion and Tenor for everything else. Some key signitures are easier on Tenor. That being said I could not imagine David Sanborn without his alto or Coltrane or Wayne Shorter without their Tenors/Sopranos.
I like playing tenor I know how to play a lot but this is a great video
thanks man

I play the alto sax and I want to know if it would be okay if someone who plays the tenor would be able to tutor me or if the instruments are too different.
I'm being a little picky, but I think it would have been helpful to see not just the tenor sax, but the alto sax also. A side-by-side visual comparison would have been a nice addition to this video. Good video nonetheless. Thank you. : )
I see now, forgetting which brand it is, that some companys are making a larger bell for the alto which gives it a less brighter or more darker tone.
Im i have playing trombone for about 2 years, playing trumpet for a year now looking at a sax. Would have loved an alto, but since you mentioned tenor is bflat that sounds more in line with my other instruments. Hope i can afford it let me go see the price.
As a 11 year old, in band currently playing clarinet, I honestly don't know what to choose. I like the sound of tenor more, but the size of the alto appeals me as I am 4"6". I Don't know what to choose!
Hello Saxophone! I play alto a couple of years,but i love the discography for the tenor ? When is the proper time to "experiment" a bit on the tenor.I don't want to damage my embouchure or my fingerings...thanks!

Nice video, thanks for sharing that :) Also, i'm looking for a good hearing comparison, do you know any nice vdeo that might be good for it?
In the classical reportoire, the alto has way more pieces
What saxophone do you recommend for a clarinet player? I have a very tight embouchure btw. I like classic rock and I'm in high school jazz band on clarinet. I'd like to be able to make a gorgeous sound on saxophone like in pink floyd's shine on you crazy diamond, and play fun jazz solos like the solo in The wander by Dion
@savagemilkman8383
7 жыл бұрын
Alto will be the best as the bigger the sax the less tight the embouchure. People may argue that B flat is the same key on tenor...but the fact is that when you read music a C is always a C. And on any Saxophone a C is always fingered the same whether Alto or Tenor. You just learn to adjust your half steps up or down from the designated "concert" note
For playing duets, for example whit a piano, wich one of them is "better"?
You play the didgeridoo as well?
I was wondering if you had any video's that labeled all the keys of the alto saxophone? I'm trying my best to learn them well. Thanks!
@sea619er
9 жыл бұрын
Yo. You can look up a fingering chart online. Tip: the keys are the same on both the tenor and alto, ie; a G is played/fingered the same on both (as are all notes) and that's also true for the flute, clarinet, and oboe. So once you learn how to finger the notes on one of them, you can play them all the same way the difference is the omnature (how you shape your mouth/lips on the mouthpiece. Hope this gave you some insight.

No, The notes on the tenor will be different. You could play it using the same fingerings as on the alto of course, but then you will be playing it in a different key, as the Tenor is tuned differently then the alto. So the best way is to just use your ears to figure it out on the Tenor. That way you can't go wrong :)
