    Yes, I'm fully aware that there were a few errors in this video. (Metric system, 10 yards for a kick, missed field goal is live, Alaska is not part of Canada etc.) I corrected these with annotations, which you should be seeing in the video as the errors come up. Can people please stop pointing these things out, as they appear on screen and it's visible enough to read? This was one of my first attempts at video production and have improved massively since 3 years ago.

    Perhaps this individuals that are pointing out these errors watched the video on a mobile device (like myself), or a system that uses the KZread TV app, in which annotations do not appear, so we can't read those fixes. I'm impressed with the overall quality of the video though.

    +Matt Laq I used to watch when they're were US franchises, the most successful was the Baltimore Stallions who started as the CFLColts until the NFL stopped that and were known as the CFLs, until 1995 when they were renamed the Stallions, after they won the Grey Cup, Modell moved the Browns to Baltimore, and the league pulled of the US, the Stallions became the third incarnation of the Montreal Allouttes, They became successful once they left the Big Owe and moved to Molson Stadium at McGill University.

    ???? Please explain how RB's have 800~1,000 rushing yards seasons then? Here's the top 4 rushers from 2013, for example. It's just ignorant to say there's not a running game in The CFL. Yes, it is pass-heavy compared to the NFL. But the running game is very important for any Cup contending teams in the league; without one, teams rarely win The Grey Cup. It has quite a following in the US and has always been on ESPN just never publicized. My dad use to watch it all the time in the 80s when I was a kid. The CFL also had a hand in the rise of the Baltimore Ravens. When the owner of the then Cleveland Browns saw that sell out crowds were drawn to the CFL team Baltimore Stallions, he abruptly moved the original Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. So it just showed the following of football in general whether Canadian or American.

    One major aspect of the waggle is that it really changes the technique of the Defensive Backs. it is virtually impossible to jam a receiver who is coming to the line at speed and has a two way go. So DB's give the motion receivers more cushion and this makes coverage more difficult. It is one of the reasons why a tight end is rare in Canada Why use a receiver who is frozen until the snap? and more easily jammed.

    Ninh Ly By the way union is much better than league. Union although it might have some breaks they're aren't as long as football breaks. Also league is too repetitive and union actually is quite fast now. Just watch some six nations and compare it to state of origin. Union has more diversity as it has more kicks and passing although the hits aren't as hards. Them scrums,the mauls, the competitive rucks,and the tension leading up to a penalty goal is what makes union far better. Don't forget the classy lineouts.I've watched both league and union and those were my observations based on that and I'm American so I did not really grow up with a certain code.

    I've always live in the Chicago area, so my frame of reference is the NFL. But I agree that Canadian football is an interesting and lively variant with its own intrigue. Love the CFL field goal rules. For a while when I was a boy in the late 1960s, a CFL game was broadcast weekly on TV. My Dad gravitated to the Hamilton Tiger Cats because of his regard for his in-laws, the Hamiltons. Now in my early 60s I find myself pulling for the Tiger Cats. Maybe a psychiatrist can explain it all to me, but I should think it's harmless, and it is fun. I'm trying to manufacture a good reason to be in the area so I can take in a Tiger Cats game.

    The handling of out of bounds fumbles is a really important game difference. In Canada, the last touch of a ball going out of bounds gives possession to the team that touched last. players learn that swatting a ball on the ground out of bounds gains possession. This is really useful in On-side kick offs, as a team can get the ball by tipping the ball out of bounds as in a basketball tap. The wider field makes this kind of moon shot kick quite doable.

    "No yards for punts" is true, except for the punter and anyone else who is behind him at the time the ball leaves his foot (they are said to be "onside"). The reason the no yards rule doesn't exist for Kick-offs is that everyone from the kicking team is behind the kicker (they are all onside). If anyone gets ahead of the kicker, they would be offside, which is not allowed, and would result in a penalty.

  • @CanuckGod

    @CanuckGod

    Жыл бұрын

    Also, the no yards rule has changed in 2022 to where the penalty being assessed for no yards in all instance is now 15 yards, whereas it used to be more or less depending on whether or not the ball was caught off the bounce or in-air - the same 5 yard halo still applies. In reality, both American and Canadian codes have some way to protect the returner, this is just the alternative to having a fair catch.

    silkentresses There is no denying that the Harvard-McGill game is very important in the history of American football, as it signaled the point that Americans began to shift away from association football type rules to rules that more closely resembled rugby union. So Canada was instrumental in introducing rugby to America. But it was an American, Walter Camp, who took those rugby-like rules and altered them to make them more closely resemble the games we know today. He was responsible for adding the line of scrimmage, down-and-distance, and blocking to the game, as well as standardizing the points system and the size of the field. Canada adopted the Burnside rules about 20 years after Camp made most of his innovations - the Burnside rules are very similar to the brand of American football that Camp pioneered. I'm not sure where you found that quote, but it doesn't gel with any of the history I have ever heard. I have always heard that it was Camp that reduced the number of players to 11 in 1880, several years after the Harvard-McGill game. Also, there wouldn't have been any downs used at all in 1874, since those were also added to the game by Camp in the 1880s as a direct response to teams abusing his scrimmage rules and holding on to the ball for long periods of time. He originally suggested three downs to move the ball five yards, which he later changed to four and ten. The Burnside rules introduced a similar setup - three downs and ten yards - to the Canadian game. So if the question is, "which nation played football of some kind first," the answer is Canada. But if the question is, "which nation introduced the rules that make gridiron football unique from soccer and rugby," the answer is the U.S.

    Very good vid/explanation. I LOOOVE Football (High School/College/NFL) and I really enjoy watching CFL games (via ESPN), for quite a while. I especially like it that the CFL season starts before the US College/NFL season, as I can watch CFL games before our football season starts. I also love hearing the neat "Canadian accent" spoken by the announcers.

    Just pray you don't have to listen to Rod Black calling a game. He's been calling games for 3 or 4 years now and still doesn't know squat about football. He knows hockey, he knows figure skating and he knows tennis (but then how many rules are there in tennis)... but he doesn't know football, which makes it extremely irritating to listen to him.

    +Collin Mulson The Canadians played their version of football (which was more like Rugby Union) in 1861 before the Americans played their game in 1869 and then adopted Walter Camp's rules in 1880. Canadians then adopted the Burnside Rules in 1903 which made Canadian Football more like what American Football is today.

    Pretty good summary actually. Each code has it's strong points/drawbacks. I like that US football has sustained drives and less kicking (they go hand in hand) and the smaller field makes stadiums feel more intimate (small field, big stands). I like Canadian football for everything else: higher scores, more passing, nimbler athletes, late game comebacks are possible due to how the clock works, and I like that there's so much motion before the snap.

There's a whole, very detailed article on Wikipedia about it: _en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Football_League_in_the_United_States?wprov=sfla1_ Shout out to whomever wrote that article! I'm from Germany and don't know to much about American or Canadian football but this article leaves nothing out. But I still don't get how it failed that bad in places like Vegas. Baltimore showed that it can be a success.

    I prefer the CFL but after joining an NFL fantasy league have come to like the NFL as well. You're right that an NFL all-star steam would likely destroy a CFL all-star team, but that's not because the CFL game is inferior - it's because the US is 10 times larger than Canada and the NFL makes billions of dollars more than the CFL, which it invests (some of) back into the game. Comparing the two leagues is like comparing apples to oranges. Personally, I think you can enjoy both (I also enjoy NCAA football quite a bit) without getting into a dick swinging contest about who's players are "better".

    nosupa CFL Players usually become late draft picks as they are older and have less of a 'shelf-life' than a college kid. They also question whether a Canadian Footballer will adapt back to the American Game. The CFL has it's own draft and some players are picked twice, once by both leagues. Either way, you won't find a CFL player in the first three rounds of any NFL draft. As for the veterans of the NFL playing in the CFL: a lot of them struggle to adapt to the 3 downs, wider field and various nuances to the game. Most recently former Heismann Trophy winning QB Troy Smith signed with the Montreal Alouettes and absolutely stunk up the joint. Chad Ochocinco is doing okay with the Allouettes, but the people who find the most success tends to be in a specialised role. I.e. Kickers, Special Teams, etc.

    Great video, loved that people are treating the CFL with the respect it deserves. But just a question about something you said. How does having three downs make it harder for the defence? That makes it so they only have to make two stops before a punt. Besides this I agree with everything you've said 👍🏻👍🏻

    The wide open nature of the CFL game means that 4 downs would be a nearly insurmountable advantage for the offense. The use of 3 downs fits the balance between offense and defense. When you think of it; after 150 yrs, the game has evolved to a place where all the rules more or less mesh sufficiently for the game. The statement in the video appears to be a bit of a mistake.

    For the very 1st time I watched both of the NFL's semi-final games and was impressed to see a very balanced passing & running game and I was also impressed with 4 downs instead of the CFL's 3 downs - it kept the drive longer and I enjoyed it. My question is: does the NFL football style carry throughout the Regular season, or is it just mostly in the playoffs??

    Awesome video. Just in case you didn’t know ESPN televises the CFL games in the U.S. I really like watching these games as I do see the difference between the 2 league. Another thing you left out though is in the CFL, after a change of possession, the clock stops, then when the offense is out the game clock starts and after an incomplete pass, clock stops, then the referee starts the clock again. Talk about fast action. Here it is.

    Excellent video. The only (minor) error is that a missed field goal is a live ball in American football - it can be picked up and run with by the other team. The reasons this almost never happens, however, are that most kicks either hit the ground in the end zone (which makes it automatically dead) or it is declared dead because nobody touched it in the field of play (usually after a block, where neither team has any reason to touch it). However, on really long field goal attempts, especially to end halves, teams usually have a returner back to try and make a return (Just last year there was a college game [Auburn-Alabama] where Auburn won by returning a missed field goal for a touchdown). In Canadian football, however, the other team has an incentive to make sure it doesn't go out the end zone (to not concede the point), plus the end zones are longer and the goals are on the goal line, meaning there is a better shot for a return.

  • @NinhLyUK

    @NinhLyUK

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hey Eric. I'm pretty sure the NFL rules the missed field goal as dead. But you are right, in NCAA it is ruled live. Because a live missed field goal rarely happens, I had to make a few sweeping generalities with regard to some of the rules. Explaining the rule differences between Canadian Football, NFL Football, NCAA Football & International American Football would have confused the crap out of everyone! Thanks again!

    Ninh Ly Because the goalposts are at the back of the endzone in US football, the ball is rarely in play on a missed FG. Usually the only time you see it is at the end of the first half (or in the Auburn/Alabama game at the end of regulation.) In most other occurances, either the ball goes into the stands, or if it is caught short, it would actually be a better outcome for the team to take the ball at the point of the kick instead of try to run it 55yds out of the endzone.

  • @goodmaro

    @goodmaro

    9 жыл бұрын

    Ninh Ly The ball on the kick becomes dead in both codes on hitting the ground in the end zone untouched by a player, but otherwise the ball becomes dead only at the regular termination of play regardless it was an attempt at goal. In Federation rules (played by most high schools in the USA and most children's football) the kick becomes dead at the plane of the opposing goal line (if failing to score), but otherwise regardless of whether it was an attempt at goal, just like a punt, the spot of the next snap is according to regular rules, and does not come back to either the previous spot or the spot of the kick. NFL distinguished play from a field goal attempt from that of a punt in 1974, and NCAA later, while the Federation never did.
