The difference between fatigue, tiredness, and sleepiness

Many people with chronic insomnia confuse fatigue and tiredness with sleepiness. In fact, even healthy sleepers use the words interchangeably!
It's remarkably easy to mistake fatigue for sleepiness (I've done it myself!) however it's important to recognize the difference because if you go to bed when you are fatigued rather than sleepy, you will likely find it hard to sleep and this can perpetuate your insomnia.
Sleep education is a key component of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) - the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. CBT-I can help you identify cues for sleepiness so you only go to bed when the likelihood of sleep is high.

I had insomnia week last week; I usually get insomnia for 5 days straight every 2 months like clock work; 5 days where I'll get only 20-25hours of sleep in those 5 days, where it should be 40 hrs. I just got done with an episode of insomnia and slept 9 wonderful hours last night, yet I still feel sleepiness today(so that brings me up to 34 hours of sleep out of 48 in past 6 days). Also.. I didn't have my coffee today, maybe it's the coffee withdrawal.

in your snowshoveling example with tiredness, what would have been a preferred behavior as opposed to going to bed?

With hindsight, the best behavior would have been staying awake until I actually felt sleepy enough for sleep (rather than mistaking tiredness for sleepiness). If I was still living with chronic insomnia, I would also want to stay awake until the start of my sleep window. I hope this helps, Adrianne!

@@InsomniaCoach ok. Tiredness is not sleepiness. Let me propose that tiredness is a vigorous arousal moment in conflict with a vigorous sleep drive moment. The brain wants to go to sleep but the stress response wants to stay awake. Voila. Tired but wired. Once you’re relaxed you’ll get sleepy. In other words, when the sleep drive overcomes the arousal system (either because of sleep drive pressure build up or degradation of the arousal system) you’ll feel a strong urge to sleep. Did I get that right?

    Feeling weakness in the morning

That morning weakness can definitely be a concern - at the same time, how we feel first thing in the morning is not always how we'll feel later in the day. Many of us feel our lowest first thing in the morning and can start to feel a bit better as the day progresses and we engage in activities that are important/meaningful.
