I think instead, the only genres is Dubstep, that this is subdivided in English Dubstep and American Dubstep. All these musical genres you mentioned to me, i think that the sound more like American Dubstep, with some differences. The Chillstep for example sound like American Dubstep, Chillout and the sound is ambient & relaxing. American Dubstep, i also think is riddim Dubstep too. Sounds of that is more like American Dubstep but is not very heavy as the Brostep. Now uk Dubstep, it is no longer in production, altought i like it very much. In shorts words the Dubstep sound more like the souns of Reggae Dub (manufacturers of the latter is King Tubby, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Prince Jammy ecc.) and sound of 2 step garage. Instead the Brostep is more aggressive and she tends to be more unique. Here it is!!! I hope it has helped you. (Sorry for my bad english but i'm italian):))

OMG this means I've never heard any dubstep song.
Dubstep is around 140 bpm, halftime, and electronic. That's literally all it is. There are many different styles of dubstep, like the heavier, more repetitive kind like Skrillex, Excision, Datsik. There's more melodic, atmospheric dubstep, like Au5 and Fractal. There's also grimier dubstep like Flux Pavilion, Doctor P, Funtcase, and Datsik's old stuff. There's also liquid dubstep, which is supersaw-based, and doesn't rely on crazy basses as much. A lot of that can be found on AirwaveDubstepTV. Finally there's the UK dubstep like Benga, Coki, Skream, and loads more I don't personally like at all. Really it's all dubstep though if it follows the basic requirements

The first time I ever listened to dubstep in school was technically when my friends were beat boxing a dubstep track in Spanish lesson. I was in the year 9 so it would've been 2008. Later one of my friends had plugged in his iPod to a amp as we would often do in the music room. We listened to some DJ Hazard and my friend played the track he was beat boxing. I still remember how cool the bassy spacey vibe felt as we blasted it from that little music room I used to love dubstep and I would often play it at house parties, I usually liked being in control of the music and so did everyone else as I had a good taste. Then at one party suddenly one friend came and played a track and it sounded real bright and sparkly. it sounded like technology trance initially, "it sounded kinda gay". Real poppy and happy sounding. Not like the cool dark spacey trippy vibes of dubstep. Then suddenly a kid screamed "OH MY GOD!" and it dropped. And there was the start brostep. Sure we had caspa and rusko and other jagged sounding tracks but this was something completely different. We called it dubstep too but it so very wasn't

The months that followed was more of this type of music. although I did actually enjoy skrillex first album as it was fresh and cool. I began to dislike the same sounding dubstep which just seemed to be "make it as weird sounding as possible" and I then started to hate dubstep. Everyone at school thought they were so cool playing this shitty music and I began to really hate dubstep. I now realise I hated listening to bro step. I hated skrillex for a few years amd all his hits. I hated the one with Damian Marley even. and I love Damian marley. till he brought out recess. I was like... ok well damn skrillex, I went from hating you to being your number one fan. I was appalled to find out that recess was hated so much. it's a great album, apart from that weird baloon sound in stranger.

It seems that what I've been loving was Brostep all along and I didn't know what "Brostep" was until now. I love it because it's violent, in your face, mind-blowing and epic. The original Dupstep as stated in the video seems to be somewhat chill. Kind off like lounge music... Also, Americanized dubstep seems to be more popular in my area so that's why we just call it "dubstep".

@@eventhorizon6891As incredible as it may seem, Brostep is a sub-derivative of Dubstep as well as Trap EDM, both belong to different groups and cultures, so it is clearly a musical style
This was a really helpful explanation. I actually found this video because I'm trying to branch out from Vocaloid music, but I could never find the right word for the brostep-inspired instrumentals. I think I'll be able to find a lot of good artists now that I know a little more about the semantics-- I love the grungy, manic, electronic sound of brostep, but the low bass of dubstep really hurts my hears. The visuals are kind of weird though. Space, weed, and nice covert art all things I associate with "brostep"-style vocaloid. Rather than making me feel greasy and bloated like fast food, it fills me with a sort of volatile excitement that's hard to find in most music.
@fay4296
5 жыл бұрын
Oh, that actually makes a bit of sense. I installed a powerful equalizer on my headphones that blocks out anything below a certain frequency and slightly boosts treble-- so if it's meant to be louder overall, the only loud parts I'm getting are extra-boosted vocals over softened instrumentals. Of course, I'm not sure, still, if the genre I'm trying to describe matches up perfectly with "brostep;" but the first example track sounds pretty similar to one of my favorite artists, so I just went off of that.
@fay4296
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, actually I do have a hearing disorder, except the other way around!! :0 I never meet other people like me, omg?? So glad to know I'm not alone! ^__^ I'm sensitive to really low frequencies and anything over a certain volume (think fireworks, thunder, roaring concerts), so my EQ is always on. MARETU is inspired by electronic, metal, J-rock, and chiptune, so it's kind of a blending of styles. Here's some where you can hear "brostep"/dubstep influence: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3qblpp6mZS5g9I.html&t, kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXmZ2tKfXcTYl5c.html, kzread.info/dash/bejne/nHmXzLNvodOrfZs.html. Other producers I'm really into, like RINGO (kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIyX25SegambkbQ.html) and Kairiki Bear (kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWuV1dypeZTbmKQ.html), sound similar to the examples in the video too. :)

Brostep has its merits, I enjoy it but the fact that ppl associate dubstep with it is what really pisses me off. It is a derivative of dubstep, a subgenre. But it overshadowed it's roots and many ppl hate on "dubstep" because they think all dubstep is brostep. That's my only beef with the genre, and that's more of an issue with its reception than actual elements of the genre itself.

There is still pretty hard Old School Dubstep like Coki or Caspa's Hard Tearout tunes such as Demonator or Louder but they conserve the Dub/2-Step garage roots that Brostep doesn't conserve. Also Brostep is always half drum tempo but Old School Dubstep isn't always. In fact first half drum tempo Dubstep song is from 2004 (first Dubstep songs are from 2000-01) Also The Widdler - Lost In Space is Dub although he's a Dubstep producer that tune isn't because it hasn't got a 2-Step beat (It's just a half drum Dub beat) and the original tune isn't 140BPM (in this video it got sped up). Same case with Rusko - Roma and Acton Dread (although Acton Dread is still 140BPM). UK Brostep is still aight.
Why the arbitrary labelling of brostep as "American?" Nero are English...
@m.b.8446
4 жыл бұрын
Also, brostep had it's start in the UK as Rusko is British.
I refuse to call them different genres... sure, as the guy points out, they're very different sounding, but they're actually under the same genre (same structure, same BPM, same kick pattern, etc...). Both are dubstep, one is called UK dubstep, the other is called American dubstep. It's kind of like both blue jays and hummingbirds are birds. Even though (I'm making this up, obviously, but you get the point) blue jays were the first bird, it doesn't mean that hummingbirds are not birds, or that they're not "real" birds. They're still classified as birds, even though they are extremely different. TL;DR: Dubstep is a genre. UK dubstep and American dubstep (or, as this video called, "brostep") are "classifications" of the genre. Both are dubstep.

Punk Music comes to mind specifically. 1976-88 was a hot bead of controversy for punk music in the UK and the US. Truth is they are both relevant genres that have millions of fans EVERYWHERE....

CrystalClear Funcase, Flux pavillion... Just because they are British doesn't mean they don't use the same squelchy, mid-range bass.
It was Rusko's fault. I remember hearing his FabricLive mix in 2008 and thinking "what are these shit squelchy tracks?" That mix is loaded with the blueprint for shitty American dubstep. But lest we forget, the SAME EXACT THING happened with Drum and Bass and Clownstep in the mid 2000s. Clownstep, or any form of DnB just never caught on here because it's too fast for Britney Spears or Microsoft commercials.
I love all of the genres. XD
Like illustrations for each style :D

The “dubstep” in this sounds more like house music to me tho. I’m I the only one who thought that? 🤔

You guys should check out the artist Blackmill. His music is More of a relaxed melodic chilled dubstep, kinda like the regular dubstep. And if you want more stuff like that check out Rameses B, Electus, Seven Lions and etc.
"i love dubstep, expecially Skrillex", and the only thing you want to do is to hit person sayin' that right in their face... However, brostep is not that bad, check Savant - Third Eye, really good track, but it's brostep

So, is it brostep that usually has annoying, song-ruining female, little kid or exclamatory vocals thrown in? I *fucking* hate that. But I like the heavy, aggressive sound of it.

+Kebabtsu L. True. But "Brostep" is a style of Dubstep, not a sub-genre.
For those people who still thinks that brostep is dubstep, then please consider yourself to think these : - What is the difference between goa trance and psytrance? - What is the difference between hip-hop and rap? - What is the difference between glitch hop and moombahcore? - What is the difference between jungle and oldschool drum n' bass? - What is the difference between IDM and breakcore? - What is the difference between ambient and chill-out? - What is the difference between house and disco? See? Every genre that evolves from one to another made a different variant styles. If one genre shares similarity to another genre doesn't mean it was that specific genre.

How is Brostep not Dubstep?
@RazorEdge2006
10 жыл бұрын
Brad Thompson Brostep is not Dubstep. The reason why it's even called "Dubstep" is because of its roots in Jamaican "dub" music and especially Black-British "2-step" garage music. Brostep just takes the most superficial element of Dubstep, and "mainstreams" it for a White-American audience, ignoring the very reason why it's even called Dubstep in the first place.

All I got from this was: Brostep=Varied, hard hitting and interesting with dirty bass. Dubstep= Overly repetitive and not exciting at all with clean bass. You should have really used better examples for the "dubstep" part. And any electronic music enthusiast can tell that "Brostep" is not only for Mountain Dew drinking CoD playing brodudes. Anyone with a good pair of speakers can clearly hear the intricacy and skill. Most importantly, it actually has power.
