School is what you make it. Thing on youtube are "great" because you seek for specific answers with no expectations. In art school you expect the school to learn you specific things and if dont you blame it on the school.

I happen to think art answers the questions the mind on it own cant even begin to. I find nowadays people get stuck because they are stuck on the wrong questions. Art can give the answers to the question people ought to be asking. "What causes this feeling. Oh that. I recognize that. thats so true" When I come across things I didn't know to be a thing, its usually through art where I recognize it first. It also answers the question of how to get through to people who are too afraid to be wrong. Art says, "this is this feeling, if you feel the same, then its this for you too."

For me, the difference between art and design is this: Both sides are connected and have creativity as a common source, but the difference is that art must be open to interpretation, the viewer reflects his inner world with that of the artist. Art can be inspiring and/or disturbing, everyone can take what he or she wants from the artwork. Art often asks the big questions of our time, but can rarely give answers. Design is the exact opposite: Ideally, design should communicate the same thing clearly and understandably for everyone. Design can also be inspiring, but it should reflect the vision/values of the brand/client. Design solves specific problems, i.e. develops answers to specific questions. Right in between you end up with art that is uninspiring but perhaps beautiful to look at and design that is smooth and beautiful but inefficient and does not solve the client's problems.

The designer has a concrete role, the artist has a subtle role. From my point of view a designer is more a translator, he translates his client's ideas into images. He is on the border between a psychoanalist and a craftsman. By the way, thank you for all this teaching. Best from France !

I have so many interests and things I want to explore that I always feel like giving up on them meant giving up on me, but this concept and what Chris said, I'm sold! So much value in this one and I have never seen Chris talk about it like these. I'm super grateful! Things might start coming together for me because of that! Edit: just found out the bite-sized video of that part is already on the channel, opsies.

I needed to see this. I was experiencing a lot of internal turmoil over seeing myself as a generalist. I didn't understand why it was so difficult for people to see that it was a good thing, but now I see it from their perspective. I agree that consistently showing people quality work, and building up a reputation is important. I think now I just have to pick a lane and commit to it externally, while internally allowing myself to explore.

I think the first question resonates with a lot of designers when first starting out. Many of us started learning design because of a passion for art and creativity. However, the further down the design road you travel, the less it seems you can indulge your personal creativity. The vast majority of designers will get their foot in the door with in-house positions pushing pixels at the whim of various clients or senior managers - largely at the mercy of strict brand guidelines and myopic briefs. The early career grind can be disillusioning unless you can demonstrate enough value to climb out of the pixel pusher roles, or dedicate enough free time to pushing out your personal creativity so that people start to seek you out.

I always tell people in the early stages of learning to source everything they can. They won't always have to do this in life but it makes them appreciate things more. The last client that said "I could have got this on fiver", i handed them the files and told them some people cannot work together. Trading with other creatives is a brilliant way of doing things. I love the insight that the words you choose shape your reality... it reminds me of something Stephen Fry wrote that has stuck with me ever since I read it, which is: "language is the parent of thought" ... it's amazing to consider that we might only truly conceive something when we have the language for what it is and what it is not. And of course it's such a powerful perceptive tool. Always with the nuggets Chris, love it.

I feel like we shouldn´t say to ourselfeves that "we need money", since it´s a chaining tought. As an artist, a designer and a healer, for me was really liberating to think "I want to serve people, as an act of love, therefore meterially I want money as an objective and functional measure of that succes, and also as a way to make my inner feelings and ideas to meterially prosper and spread"

Art is communication. It is a highly evolved level of expressing feelings, experiences and ideas. Whether through fine art, music, dance, literature, film etc. Most Artists explore our humanity by bringing their subconscious to the conscious level. Artists often experience “flow” (a psychological state of optimal experience) while practicing their craft. The monkey brain shuts down and you seamlessly preform without thought. This explains why some Artists might say they’re creating Art for its own sake and not to intentionally express anything specific. I often become frustrated or bored with people struggling to define Art/ asserting that only certain things are Art. I see such discussions as philosophical, subjective and wastes of time (Not to say philosophy is, just that these types of discussions are). Art is simply the latest language we use to communicate with ourselves and/ or each-other. Just as there are many different languages people may use to communicate, there are many different forms Art may take. As we evolve, so will the sophistication of our communication and therefore our “Art”.

such an amazing video, i learned so much! thank u for putting this up for others to see. my main issue now is how do i choose a speciality? or how do i figure out which lane i want to stay on track on? i have so many interest and right now, i love them all equally, photography, graphic design, illustration, and video editing/production. any advice on how to decide which one i should focus on? it seems like such a hard hurdle to overcome.

I learnt the difference in Art School... A Designer creates things can be used and mostly work to briefs. A house, clothing, bridge, posters for communication etc. An Artist creates things that have no function and the work mostly comes out through exploration and play, typically from intellectual and/or emotional enquiry.

The important distinction is whether or not the graphic designer or artist has done anything to show in their portfolio. If they do NOT, charging too much could prevent them from achieving non-financial benefits like joy, better health, generosity, building an amazing portfolio etc. The major reason why many freelancers lack work or opportunities is their unwillingness to invest in developing their skills, relationships and practices. For exceptional people have evidence of their talent and skills ample so they could follow your high pricing strategy.

This is a great discussion. Concerning "the fear of design everywhere" as threatening competition seems very real. But it is not. On the contrary. The competition for good design spreads out exponentially. I was a print expert and a print design expert when multimedia and the internet exploded onto the scene around 1997-ish. I was desperately learning how to make motion things, interaction things, video things, audio things, 3D things, Director/Flash things and html web pages. All at once I realized it will become impossible to master the Internet. And I was self defeated until I read an article in Wired magazine where I learned at the time there was an estimated number of new web pages posted every hour that were measure in hundreds of thousands. And I knew that number would go up. My great awakening was this. Over 99% of new web pages look terrible. I will have people that need to improve website design until I pass away, or their is not electricity. The needs for good visual artists and designers seems to be exploding. The unnoticed need is all the people making all the web pages, need their web pages to work well and look attractive. They need you.

I've been scolded by a lot of people telling me that art and design are not the same thing because of the making stuff for someone else idea or problem solving way of thinking. What about commissions? You are hired to solve a problem using art, drawing a comic book cover and while you are using some design skills you are still only applying art, not making it for yourself, not even using things that come from you and it's to solve a problem. I'm starting to think that when people say art they think of high abstract art or something along those lines while art has more variations than design, while incorporating it.

I kinda agree with you except this part _"not even using things that come from you "_ 🤔 When making an art commission, the source material may not be from me, but I definitely DO use something that comes from me: My own personal years of experience, style, unique use of tools, etc. Some artists for example get hired just because of their style (or one of their styles) because others want art in that specific style (or similar).

  • @IftimescuVlad

@@YVZSTUDIOS That's what I was referring to when I said you are still solving a problem. That's the part that comes from you, whatever it may be: use of colors, style of drawing, etc. but the most important part IS the source material and that does not belong to you as most people will be interested in the source not necessarily the art, the art is a nice bonus.

Wow! Chris really helped me to feel normal with this video. I’ve been an artist for 20 years, and have never felt any good at it because my brain has always been flooded by new ideas to be creative. Once the flooding started I would ditch whatever I was currently creating to start a new creative endeavor. Shiny new syndrome! I’m gonna change my thinking and focus at what I’m good at now. 👍👍👍👍
