    What I love about these videos is that they make it clear that Alexandra and basically any player with an OTB rating over 2000 is on a completely different level than the majority of us, and also that GM's make them look like amateurs in regards to how they see the board and the possibilities. It really does become more like art than calculation in the way GM's approach positions. I remember enjoying watching the Hikaru/Levy videos where they did the same thing and Hikaru's grasp of the position relative to Levy's was like a first-team All-NBA compared to a D-league player. Both are some of the best in the world, but it's clear that one is in a different League.

    I‘ve read that a difference in 130 Elo points is pretty much „the person knows twice as much about chess than the other person“. Probably very inaccurate and definitely not linear like that, but it put everything into a nice perspective for me

    It's worth considering that Danya is not a regular GM. He is the ~150th best player of the world in standard chess and, most importantly, he is certainly one of the BEST blitz/bullet player in the online format in the world. So the distance in thinking process should be greater than a regular GM-IM comparison.

    Trying to solve the puzzles was a strange experience for me. In the first puzzle, I thought about the stalemate possibility early on, but then dismissed it because I didn't think I could immobilize my h-pawn. Then I never went back to that idea. In the second position, ...Qd8 trying for a pin on the d-file was my first instinct, but then I couldn't see how to make it work and I abandoned it. I guess the lesson is, don't abandon a promising idea until you're sure it won't work.

    I know I'm bad because they don't even discuss knight E5 in the 2nd scenario. Puts pressure on the white queen at least for a move while removing the threat from that knight. I guess it stops your queen from pushing up, but as long as that bishop is where it's at is the queen ever going to want to go to those squares? WQ is pretty much forced to go B3. She's retreating anyway, so she might as well defend. She has no aggressive options that BQ can't respond to in time. I guess there's not much progression other than being aggressive while down in pieces. It feels like there should be a world where the knight can try to make its way to G4 to disrupt the king's defensive position, but it comes after some pieces dance around a bit on the right side of the board.

  • @TravisHirkala
    @TravisHirkala6 ай бұрын

    My first initial instinct was Bxh2 Kxh2 but then I realized that the King doesn’t have to take back even though almost all players would without thinking if the time was getting low. From there I’d slide the Qh5+, Kg1, Qd1+. From here the King could dodge back or white could block with bishop or queen. Bishop is losing because you just take the Queen so Qf1 is white’s only other response. Don’t trade or it’s likely a draw after King takes your Queen then Nxd4 although this is likely favorable enough to win given low time again. Instead Qxd2 and all of a sudden you’ve got white forced to defend while you clean up the pawns, eventually promoting a pawn and winning the game. If King dodges then Qxa4. Defending your knight and evening the original pawn deficit. It all depends on time though and is reliant on King taking the bishop in the very beginning. Of course if the King doesn’t take the bishop then you win a free pawn. And the situation is back to square one where you could play what they suggested with Qd8.

I get the feeling Alex looks more at the "core chess principles". rather than a deeper and more situational-focused approach. Really looking for the best move like a computer. Also, as Daniel mentioned the pieces stacked I too realized that the options had to be between Qd7/Qd8. And it shows u must really pay attention to all details to find the winning idea. And once you find the right Idea u look for the right move between all options through elimination.

    Lots of GM's now would only be Masters 40 or so years ago. Ratings inflation has watered down the GM class immensely..

    9:08 at my level this is an easy puzzle. I would win 9/10 times Just move the bishop to b4, white takes with the bishop, I take with the a pawn, he thinks he has a free knight, then I backrank checkmate. Bing, bang, boom - POW, as a wise chess player once said.

    Thought about that hoping it could disrupt w's B and threat Qe1 after Bx(B)b4. But my 100 rated ass never saw that after Nb4, w's Q just moves XD. Nb4 is the second best move but stil miles behind Qd8.
