What I love about these videos is that they make it clear that Alexandra and basically any player with an OTB rating over 2000 is on a completely different level than the majority of us, and also that GM's make them look like amateurs in regards to how they see the board and the possibilities. It really does become more like art than calculation in the way GM's approach positions. I remember enjoying watching the Hikaru/Levy videos where they did the same thing and Hikaru's grasp of the position relative to Levy's was like a first-team All-NBA compared to a D-league player. Both are some of the best in the world, but it's clear that one is in a different League.

I‘ve read that a difference in 130 Elo points is pretty much „the person knows twice as much about chess than the other person“. Probably very inaccurate and definitely not linear like that, but it put everything into a nice perspective for me

@@LJMahomes Well, looking at the World Cup commentary right now and seeing how Super GMs like Giri and Caruana evaluate a position and see moves compared the the "Normal" GM commentators it also feels like a whole different world, so i think the 130 points rule is not that far off
Danya is amazing at puzzles. Those puzzles would have taken me much, much longer. It was cool to see your calculations processes. I really hope this series continues where you can take 10+ minutes. Also Danya picked freaking complex puzzles.
Always enjoying Danya explaining the OTB classical calculation process.
One of the best real chess videos I’ve ever seen… and I’ve seen plenty of speed runs & such (not much into “content creator” stuff). The insights aren’t preachy but natural & down to earth.🙏 Enjoying the recent game analysis talking through your thoughts (I call it “chess out loud”) and this one for the same reason.
“what else could I be missing in this position? A lot of times when we miss tactics it’s because within the first few seconds we convince ourselves the move has to exploit certain (obvious) features of the position” love this quote by Danya
Daniel is such a fun guy
Danya is a great player and an equally great teacher.
It's cool whenever you improve at chess because when looking at these puzzles, I looked at the same moves as Alex, but Danya obviously looked way further than us. Please post more these are very instructional!!!

Very instructive, many thanks for both of you.
Wow! So many possibilities so quickly! I see a need to relax in spite of competition. Thanks for a clever short!
It's worth considering that Danya is not a regular GM. He is the ~150th best player of the world in standard chess and, most importantly, he is certainly one of the BEST blitz/bullet player in the online format in the world. So the distance in thinking process should be greater than a regular GM-IM comparison.
@Nippleless_Cage

Botez is also below IM strength. So the distance is greater in both directions.
The conversation about puzzles reminded me of my math classes in college. If the question asked us to prove something, we at least knew it was true. The trickiest questions were the ones where they asked us to “prove or disprove.”
For someone unfamiliar with the rating, watch Spirit of the Law video on how Elo rating works... It can be applied to any competitive game. He analysed Elo for Age of Empires but the same rules apply, albeit with slight differences.
I really liked this video of you Alex! I saw this side of you that is so sweet! ❤

Great video. “my chess coach” cracks me up though
Very different level of difficulty in puzzles. First puzzle is for superhumans. No ideas in 30 min. Qd8 in second puzzle is trivial and took me (somewhere around 1600) a minute to find.
absolutely brilliant!
15:10 Its interesting how none of you mentioned bishop b4,if bishop takes bishop,we take back,and there is the backrank idea,if bishop b4,knight takes knight,we take the bishop,they take back with queen,then i think you can give up the h pawn with check to threaten the backrank idea again,but if bishop b4,h3,and then if we trade off bishop,knight and queen too,we are down a pawn,but the black king has a one move advantage to go out in the open,in fact we can bring the king out two ways,in fact after bishop b4,h3,i would consider a kingwalk up the board also
@couchpotato1226
Жыл бұрын
I thought the same, but the bishop might not take and if you take them they just take with the queen and you're still losing. But if it does take, don't take back just move your queen to back rank and mate them
Someone asked a question in chat (why is x play bad) and they actually took 45 seconds to run through the line and explain the ways it would play out and why it doesn't work before going back to their conversation. That's incredible, honestly shows that she really cares about her chat.
I didn't even consider a stalemate idea. I guess that's why you have to look for stalemate draws in a losing position I was only looking at a win for black
On the second puzzle ,im will go for black Kxd4 , white Qxd4 then Black Qh5 , blunder bishop if white Qxd6 , black Qd1 mate ,if im not wrong
it actually took me 30 secs to find the basic concept of the 2nd puzzle, however i thought it was Qd7 and not Qd8 because of Ne6 but then i realized that Ne6 doesn't work(1400 elo)
6:41 Why would white king move to the corner instead of just taking the undefended rook ?
Serious chess is legitimate more fun than mindless blitz, bullet games. My opinion
@Qichar
2 ай бұрын
I like the classical time controls more myself, but I would not say that blitz and bullet are "mindless". I would rather say they favor different a different skill set. And even with classical time controls, there are situations when you are running out of time, and then all your practice in rapid comes in handy.
Very interesting. It made me wonder about how my own mind works in analyzing situations.
Trying to solve the puzzles was a strange experience for me. In the first puzzle, I thought about the stalemate possibility early on, but then dismissed it because I didn't think I could immobilize my h-pawn. Then I never went back to that idea. In the second position, ...Qd8 trying for a pin on the d-file was my first instinct, but then I couldn't see how to make it work and I abandoned it. I guess the lesson is, don't abandon a promising idea until you're sure it won't work.
Puzzle at 9:11, why not Bf4 ? The back rank mate threat prevents white capturing giving black tactical options.

Question: In the last puzzle, doesnt Queen to d8 just give white a free knight? what am i missing?
@blast6190
6 ай бұрын
if they take the knight, black can attack with bishop immediately giving a check to the white king, which leaves the white queen hanging for black to take, aka winning
Found Qd8 as a 700. Kinda happy ngl
You should do this the way levy did it! He did it on his own for a few minutes and Hikaru did it on his own. That format is better for comparison of thought process.
The first position is brilliant.
I know I'm bad because they don't even discuss knight E5 in the 2nd scenario. Puts pressure on the white queen at least for a move while removing the threat from that knight. I guess it stops your queen from pushing up, but as long as that bishop is where it's at is the queen ever going to want to go to those squares? WQ is pretty much forced to go B3. She's retreating anyway, so she might as well defend. She has no aggressive options that BQ can't respond to in time. I guess there's not much progression other than being aggressive while down in pieces. It feels like there should be a world where the knight can try to make its way to G4 to disrupt the king's defensive position, but it comes after some pieces dance around a bit on the right side of the board.
My first initial instinct was Bxh2 Kxh2 but then I realized that the King doesn’t have to take back even though almost all players would without thinking if the time was getting low. From there I’d slide the Qh5+, Kg1, Qd1+. From here the King could dodge back or white could block with bishop or queen. Bishop is losing because you just take the Queen so Qf1 is white’s only other response. Don’t trade or it’s likely a draw after King takes your Queen then Nxd4 although this is likely favorable enough to win given low time again. Instead Qxd2 and all of a sudden you’ve got white forced to defend while you clean up the pawns, eventually promoting a pawn and winning the game. If King dodges then Qxa4. Defending your knight and evening the original pawn deficit. It all depends on time though and is reliant on King taking the bishop in the very beginning. Of course if the King doesn’t take the bishop then you win a free pawn. And the situation is back to square one where you could play what they suggested with Qd8.
Second puzzle I say Qd7 pinning the knight through our own bishop. We threaten to just take the knight with our knight. If white bishop protects we attack the pinned knight with our bishop and win it.
Position 5 : I would have moved my bishop to f4 to work on getting my queen to the back row but I am a 700 ELO. I do 2 seconds of thinking and hope it works :)

@@robertwilson3866 i mean there are a lot of possibilities but most of them are draws considering your option, or maybe slightly better for white since he has a extra pawn. even if you would be winning a knight, giving away bishop for a knight isnt really the best option and probably still a bit losing after trading some more extra pawns, since the bishop is really stronger after you clear the board

10:53, after queen takes bishop takes, bank rank mate from the queen correct? You take the bishop after check, then the queen and then the night with #?

In the second puzzle why don't we play bishop b4

very interesting comparing my own thoughts with those of Alex and Daniel. I resonate more with Daniel thought process. I get the feeling Alex looks more at the "core chess principles". rather than a deeper and more situational-focused approach. Really looking for the best move like a computer. Also, as Daniel mentioned the pieces stacked I too realized that the options had to be between Qd7/Qd8. And it shows u must really pay attention to all details to find the winning idea. And once you find the right Idea u look for the right move between all options through elimination.
