Watching this, I imagined how powerful the dhampirs bite were if it would qualify for Sneak Attack. Imagine a Rogue casually healing for several additional d6 on top of Rogues defensive abilities like evasion.

I think if you fenagle with the rules a bit you could make the bite part of a ranged rogues attack. To my knowledge: there are no rules that say that you can't pull out your fangs and or put them back in, I've not found any rules that say that you can't substitute 1 type of ammunition for another type of ammunition, so with 3 lvls of eldritch knight fighter you can weapon bond your fangs and call them back as a bonus action and, fighter also gives proficiency with the blowgun (which is ranged and can trigger sneak attack). As for what subclass?, THEMATICALLY Phantom of course (although the amount that you would heal wouldn't be more than with a normal rogue), other options could be Arcane Trickster (all the spell combo's you want) or Assassin (if you do get surprise that would be a lot of healing and well if your DM allows the fenagling he might also give you some of those surprise rounds). You may have to take Tavern brawler to convince your DM perhaps. How would I flavor it?, granny (phantom rogue and ''former adventurer'' escaped her care facility again, loses her teeth regularly and starts beating people up with her cane (disguised blowgun and rapier) if things aren't going her way. XD

Love playing Dhampir but I find the spider climb more fun than the bite. I had a Dhampir shadow monk 6 / beast barbarian 3 and my favorite thing to do was drop down from the ceiling, do my 3 attacks (claws and unarmed), then shadow step back up. With all the monk mobility and darkness, it was the epitome of playing a bloodthirsty vampire.

While it doesn't factor in the healing ability, I am quite fond of Zephyr Strike for thematic purpose. The immunity against opportunity attacks and occasional short burst of movement are great to represent the supernatural speed. It's also nice whenever you need to switch target for your taunt/grapple (not recommended to change target, but you're here to defend the real dpr anyway). Also, picturing an armored predator dragging its grappled prey over 35 feet is both terrifying and hilarious.

Good options, for sure. Unfortunately, we wouldn't have been able to meet our Wis/Dex requirements for multiclassing then if we also wanted a 16 Str and a 17 Con. And tbh, my biggest regret with this build is how relatively low our Str stayed until the very end, and even then only getting to 18. With both our grapple *and* our Goading attack dependent on a good Str score, it would really hurt to have to sacrifice it to have a Con based feat, though there are some decent ones.

The Dhampir synergizes extremely well with the Order of the Lycan Blood Hunter. Lots of speed boosts plus the inherent wall walking, blood hunter makes good use of skills and dhampir gives 2 bonus skills, and most importantly the dhampir bite helps mitigate the Lycan’s biggest weakness- the bloodlust effect. Because you’re compelled to attack the nearest target, you can choose to use your dhampir bite for that attack; that way if you do end up attacking a party member you aren’t exactly dealing damage to the party so much as you’re redistributing hit points.

Yes the rest that it gets is complete and utter garbage, but getting hp back equal to your hemocraft die aint bad. Since at lvl 7 (urgh) you get your 2nd slot, you could than go sorcerer for the rest of the build. Both the lvl 3 and lvl 7 abilities don't interfere with your Dhampir bite.

More of a hit and run version of this build. I also looked at magic items, and the Blood Fury tattoo is amazing for high level play. It's Legendary, so definitely talk to your GM and don't expect it until mid teen levels, but it's so perfect for this character.

I think you can make a bite crit a statistically significant occurance. With an expertise grapple you can assume a grappled state, with followup shove-prone bonus action (with shield expert), and then your final extra attack (advantaged bite). You might consider shield expert instead of piercer for this reason, it gives you an evasion dex save and a bonus action which you can use to get that followup shove prone.

Fun little quirk of the Dhampir is that if you replace your race with it, you keep flying speeds. I’d just talk to your dm and ask to get a flying speed to simplify things (it’s overpowered, but it’s worth an ask). Then you could fly your opponent up into the sky while grappling to drop them. This deals a few d6 of damage, might force them prone, and then you can attack at advantage.

Nope, the feature says "fanged bite" which is a verb, which cannot be "touched" - so magic weapon (and holy weapon) with super strict RAW does not work. If they had just said "fangs" it would be inline with other natural weapons like Leonid Claws, but they did it weird and messed it up.

Saying a vampire/dhampir isn't able to touch their own teeth in their mouth because the opening sentence of the ability is describing it in a manner that makes it clear that it is specifically with your fangs is just pedantic. If you were trying to argue that someone couldn't use Booming Blade or GFB on the fangs I would agree as they aren't worth 1sp, HOWEVER, the very next line states they are a simple melee weapon and therefor can be affected by spells such as magic weapon/holy weapon/elemental weapon and abilities such as Dedicated Weapon and Path of the Kensei as well as the Hunter ranger's multi-attack (so long as you have enough uses of it for each target).

I'm simply pointing out another oddity due to how the rules are written. If the rules were written consistently, this feature would not have been written this way, but it is. Ive been wracking my brain the past few days on how to build a character with a "healing factor", something like this. What I've came up with is: Dhampir -for the bite Witherbloom background -for wither and bloom (and theme) Long Death Monk -bite damage is a d6, touch of death, extra attack, piercer feat From 6th level on, I'm a bit stuck. I'm between Druid and Warlock. Spores Druid seems thematically in line, plus Symbiotic Entity bumps bite damage, but not healing but gives temp hp. Aside from that, wildshaping into a wolf, bat, giant spider and so on, fits my idea of a vampire. Warlock on the other hand, offers Hexblade's Curse -bonus to damage and healing by extention, plus expanded crit range, and more healing if the target dies. And spells that are both helpful and thematic like shield and vampiric touch.

Had another player go dhampir wizard in a recent tomb of annihilation campaign. During the Acererak fight he’d spend each turn biting an ally for the ability check bonus. Combined with the bard’s bardic inspiration he was able to counterspell nearly everything Acererak had. It definitely helped that the barbarian had him grappled prone lol.

Resilient Feat in Dex will help you with Fireballs. Also if you read D&D lore Silver is one of the best metals for conducting magic. Coat your teeth with Silver magic sigils & you'll get your magic teeth & +1+2+3. Dhampir Undead Warlock. I'm playing this build right now. Instead of focusing on piercing damage I focus on Necrotic damage. 1) At level 14 you heal for 1/2 of all Necrotic damage dealt & 100% of all piercing. This build doesn't do a lot of damage & it doesn't heal a lot. However, this build is durable. Between the temporary HP & the heal from all of your attacks you're very hard to kill. 2) Pact of the blade gives you a magic weapon, +1, +2 magic weapon options, & x2 attacks with Invocations. 3) At level 12 you add your Cha to all attacks. 4) Get expertise in the History skill & use your bite bonus to gain untold knowledge from anyone you bite. Bite target -> gain knowledge (History) on your enemies -> use the knowledge gained to progress the campaign.

I got to grappling strike one guy with my claws, drag him up a 60 ft high wall using a special rule we had in place for movement, with him kicking and screaming the whole way, before biting to recover what little damage he scratched me with and then dropping him to his death, it was awesome.

Oh wow! Awesome build. Love the idea of the sealf healing bite! When I heard Constitution score at 20 I immediately thought two things: the ultimately SAD character that uses one stat for attacks and survivability and, tied to that; the Eco night: of course this would not be for a taking character, but combining this with the gloomstalker option from the ranger as well... a lot of enemies would be missing some chunks in that nova first round of combat. With a con +5 you could make 5 attack from your shadow. And then some more with the gloomstalker surprice round... would totally keep blind fighting + fog combo and consider falh feats like piercer and crusher if we get the unharmed fighting style as well.

So I hadn't looked into dhampir much before. When you first started describing it I actually immediately thought grave domain cleric. First level fighter, three levels of grave domain so that you can pick up path to the grave and spirit guardians. I would also work in war caster so now our stacked constitution means we do not lose concentration on Spirit guardians, bonus that guardians damage does not work off our proficiency bonus, pretty much ever. We are a face tanking cleric that acts as an area denial and once we have the extra attack feature we can run up to that big bad take some heavy damage while maintaining spirit guardians then drop a path to the grave and empowered bite to double that bite healing with the additional advantage of being able to cure wounds ourself if needed. If we push cleric to level 5 we can get vampiric touch and we probably won't lose concentration on it thanks to war caster and deal some brutal 3d6 damage healing half. Additionally the DM pretty much is not allowed to crit on anyone which I feel like is at least as valuable as preventing a hit. My idea probably does not protect my friends quite as well but I think may be a bit harder to take down while also providing healing and come on a dhampir that worships death. Soooo meta!

Kensei Monk Teeth are simple weapons that can be used with Deft Strike. They are also count as monk weapons, so scale with Martial Arts. At level 17 as a Kensei Monk (1st ASI +2 Dex | 2nd ASI Piercer | 3rd ASI Fey Touched (Wisdom) | 4th ASI +2 Widom) Round 1: Bonus Action: Hunters Mark (Fet Touched), + Attack: 1d10+5+1d6 + Extra Attack: 1d10+5+1d6 Round 2: Attack: 1D10+5 + Deft Strike (1D10) + Hunters Mark (1D6) average of 19-20 (19.5, technically) piercing damage (all of which is piercing that you can heal), Extra Attack: 1d10+5 + 1D6, Bonus Action: 1d10+5 + 1d6 + 1d10+5 + 1d6 Then take 3 levels of Fighter (Battle Master for maneuvers or Champion to start crit fishing which combines well with Piercer) Or 3 levels of Ranger (Hunter for Colossus Slayer or Gloom Stalker for Dread Ambusher) In terms of when to take what classes, if going Fighter - start with it to get the extra starting HP, then go Monk 6 to get extra attack and Deft Strike then decide depending on how quickly you want to scale your Martial Arts. If going Ranger, I would probably go Monk to 6 then decide depending on the value of the extra D8 and spell slots (more Hunters Marks etc). If you take Ranger or Fighter, that Round 2 now looks like: Attack: 1D10+5 + 1d10 (DS) + 1D6 (HM) + 1D8 (CS or DA) for an average of 24 damage that you can heal. Extra Attack: 1D10+5 + 1D6 (HM) Bonus Action: FoB 1D10+5 + 1D6 (HM) + 1D10+5 + 1D6 (HM) Average Round damage of 66 (not factoring conditions from BM maneuvers, stunning strike or crits). If you took Fighter, you could Action Surge for an additional 24-25 (24.5) damage, bringing your damage for the round up to 90-91 (90.5). If you managed to land a Struning Strike in there, you get ADV on your attacks. If you took Champion, you crit on a 19 or a 20. Meaning you have a 19% chance to crit and bring piercer into play (as well as double down your Martial Arts, Deft Strike, Hunters Mark). I would probably pick up the Superior Technique fighting style, so you also have a D8 maneuver you can use. Meaning IF you land a stunning strike on your first attack, the remaining 3 attacks have a 19% chance to Crit (more or less a 1 in 5 chance). So potentially your damage output looks like Attack: 1D10+5 (stunning Strike) + 1D6 Extra Attack or Bonus Action FoB: 1D10+5+1D10(crit)+1D10(piercer) + 1D10(DS)+1D10(crit) + 1D6(HM)+1D6(crit) + 1D8(maneuver)+1D8(crit) for an average of 48-49 (48.5) damage that you can heal... which is pretty nutty.

So I was able to get the bite to average 26.5 damage with only one thing needing a “talk to your dm” its still 24.5 if not War cleric 14, gloom stalker 6. Take hunters mark and the unarmed fighting style from a feat. In the first round of combat your bite can deal 4d8+1d6+5 Another option, though way stupider is battle master 3 /scribe wizard 17. Unarmed fighting, any maneuver, and transmute your spirit shroud to piercing damage from ice knife. Bite deals 6d8+5 for 32 average damage. Also you get action surge while being a full caster so thats cool

Watching how roles change over the years makes me feel old. These days a tank is basically a masochistic meat shield. Very durable, calls all the damage to itself. When I first started playing, creatures targeted the 'tank' for an entirely different yet valid reason. The desire to survive. Much like actual tanks in the military, the old Tank character was durable as hell but always featured one ridiculously hard-hitting attack. DPS wasn't the order of the day but rather the ability to shrug off mobs and wade into melee to utterly wallop something. Also, in older rule sets 'taunting' was typically achieved via a social check, typically persuasion, bluff or intimidation to demoralize or provoke your enemies. At my own table this sort of play is highly encouraged, as it facilitates RP.

Very fun build - and pretty unique! The concept of it seems like a ton of fun, and one that I'm definitely considering in a way I wasn't before. It's a fun challenge to see what can be done with that bite attack One option I'm surprised you didn't consider is going Barbarian, though - a 1-3 level dip could come in very handy in a lot of ways. While 21 base AC at the end is very nice in heavy armor, maxing out CON first means that you're not going to be that far behind even with unarmored defense (with a switch from 16 STR to 16 DEX starting), you'd get a base AC of 20 - and could bump it up further. It'd be a more situational rage than most builds (since you'd be losing out on Hunter's Mark and Absorb Elements when used), but I think the damage reduction could be very much worth it - especially if a DM would allow you to use Favored Foe while raging (which I know is iffy rules wise, but something I'd allow personally). And obviously the rage could come in handy with getting advantage on grappling checks, counteracting the slightly lower STR score. I mention it because to me, it seems like a lot of the levels post fighter 6/ranger 3 don't bring *that* much - they help, certainly, but I don't know if they'd bring as much as incorporating barbarian into the build. The swords bard alternative could be interesting as well - though you'd need to lose out a good bit on STR to get the CHA score needed for multi-classing, picking up 5 levels in bard after lvl 9 would be pretty tempting. 3 uses of blade flourish per short rest seems like it'd help with survivability a good bit (using it on empowered bites obviously, and with the AC boost). And with that, if going for a full "how far can we push it", a level in hexblade could help too - hexblade's curse would add dmg to the weapon attacks (healing more), crit more, and you'd gain the shield spell (which I would personally theme as temporarily phasing into a misty form). All told, I think Fighter 6/Ranger 3/Bard 5/Warlock 1 seems like it could be a challenge to the current version - with 2 levels to round out where it best fits. (I'd probably do Ranger 4 for a feat, and Warlock 2 for invocations - mask of many faces and devil's sight both feel pretty thematic for a vampire character)

It was meant to be as an addition not in addition. (it adds to the build as a whole not to the mechanic specifically) (I know it's a bit of a convoluted and perhaps pedantic to continue arguing, but I consider it an important distinction, for the sake of brevity however I'll leave the thread like this. The hunter choice is great as you said, but i would suggest another route from a different point of view: hunter matches perfectly the predatory aspect of a vampyre, and i love it, what about a Swarmkeeper for the Swarm of Bats? it's 1d6 instead of 1d8 piercing damage and with less survavibility from the second hunter feature, but with more control, fly speed (from your bats ahahaha) and a mage hand cantrip in the form of the swarm that could be fine. It's only a suggestion ofc, during the video i figured in my mind this dhampyr who jumps in the fog killing is foes, and i thought about the swarm of bats!

Thanks! I love the idea, but I believe RAW the bats wouldn't enhance your bite (and thus give more healing etc.) as we're told the healing only comes from the bite attack you make and the swarmkeeper damage comes "from the swarm." Obviously your DM may rule otherwise :).

I went for an Oath of Vengence Paladin Dhampir. Yes I found a good story so that he is engaged in his tenets. Can basically burn Channel infinity for the +10 for one minute and get right in the middle of the fight. Then if he gets below half he will start going on with advantage. More than anything he is built for being tanky and always hitting. Might be good to take Sentinel. Also a 1 dip into Undead Warlock (Not undying) so that you can have the Divine Smite Fright Bite.

This is amazing. But I think I'm gonna go with monk(kensai)/ranger(hunter) simply because kensai is my favorite, bit also I can make a solid dex/con/wis build with long sword and a fancy suit so I can look like Alucard from castelvania or Selene from underword

What if we used this Dhampir to create a constitution based spellcaster? At 4th level, we can take the Aberrant Dragon Mark feat, and use constitution to cast 2 spells, a cantrip, and a levelled spell. Importantly, that spell is always a constitution based spell for us, even if we use spell slots to upcast it. Since we can take 2 spells, I would learn Chill Touch and Chromatic Orb. Chill Touch is thematically on point for necrotic damage and then preventing others from healing, and Chromatic Orb so your 1 spell has some versatility. So, At level 6, be a sorcerer 4 and a Cleric 2. Taking a note from the Lightning Mage build. You will have a constitution score of 18 at this point. So you upcast and twin Chromatic Orb, make it deal max damage with lightning. So it deals 40 damage and potentially hits 2 creatures for a total of 80 damage. Of course you could also go custom lineage to get this combo going at level 1 instead of waiting 4 levels. But Then you don't get the Dhampir's bite attack. I just like the feeling of a sorcerer that uses their constitution, their *bloodline*, to cast spells.

I had an idea for a similar build. Except mine is a High Dex Melee Battlemaster build that uses a rapier. Eventually picking up the piercer feat. And finishing in rogue

Love the character concept! The fog cloud is an especially great touch for a stalking vampire feel. How do you feel about an alternative version with beast barbarian? I don’t think you can combine the beast bite with empowered bite and you can’t cast spells, but beast barbarians get magic bites at lvl6 as well as more health and resistances. The main draw for me would be that beast bites have an indefinite amount of self-healing with a bigger damage die as long as it’s below half health, so you could heal yourself back up with the beast bite then heal even further with empowered

Worth considering - having resistance to most damage would be a big boon to survivability, but not being able to get the rage bonus for our Vampiric bite would make me sad (Strength-based attacks only). Some fun synergy though!

There's also the option of using strength on your bite. Con is optional. - your hp wouldn't go so high, but your grapple/battle master saves would be better, and you have the option of complimenting it with traditional weapons. Also means you could take the heavy armor master feat real early. There's always options in d&d 🙃

I think Con is not optional, because a word, 'can' is missing for the sentence. Vampiric Bite says: You add your Constitution modifier, instead of your Strength modifier, to the attack and damage rolls when you attack with this bite. If it would be optional, the sentence should look like: "You CAN add your Constitution modifier..."

Bear totem Barb could be a good multiclass to give more damage resistance and advantage on grapple checks and Dex saving throws. Reckless attack is also kind of a taunt in its own right. Then take the grappler feat, maybe a level of rogue or ranger for the expertise/canny to further boost athletics, or just take the skill expert feat. After all, what's more vampire than a raging bloodlusting monster lifting you by the throat with one hand before it bites you?
