The Devastating Downfall Of Heroes

Ойын-сауық

When NBC's Heroes first debuted in 2006, it was drastically ahead of it's time in the superhero genre. Airing 2 full years before Iron Man came out, Heroes was a very different look at what superhero stories could be. Though as the series progressed into season 2, the Writers Guild of America went on strike and Heroes would never recover.

Hollywood's entire business model revolves around creating stories, and yet they regularly undervalue and mistreat their writers. Constructing narratives is an incredibly complicated and difficult task, but because it's hard to appreciate the skill required compared to visual art-forms, executives assume anyone can do it. Yet I'd argue bad writing is the only thing that can single-handedly destroy a film or show. A bad actor or special effect can be overlooked, but never bad writing.

He was so proud when he showed us what he'd done, and after reading it all I could think was: "look how they massacred my boy." The fact that he couldn't immediately tell how shoddy it was made me realize just how blind non-writers are to the complexity of the craft.

I'm of the personal belief that ChatGPT "could" prove to be a valuable tool to writers. However, that is completely marred by the fact that most companies seek to decrease cost and increase profits, even if that means cutting out the human element of most work. The bigger problem with that is they are trying to make a "tool" that replaces the tool "user". A tool is only so good as the one that weilds it

I was so invested in heroes when it first came out. The super power mystery aspects of the story were pretty unique for a series at the time, but I felt by the end of season 2 they had ran out of new ideas and the mystery aspect felt more and more forced and generic. They added forgettable new characters who just made it a bit convoluted, but the occasional new interesting charecters always seemed to go nowhere or be wasted (christopher Ecclestons invisible man for example). I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times. Heroes didn't fail because of the writer's strike. That was just coincidental timing. The primary reason that Heros failed is because they didn't make it an anthology show. That was one of their original plans and they chickened out. The reason that season 1 was so compelling is because it was about normal people trying to live their normal lives and being thrust into a world beyond their understanding. It was about coming to terms with this strange, scary, wonderful new ability that made them different. That made them unique. It was about coming to grips with a part of yourself that you didn't ask for and maybe trying to live the life you wanted to or maybe make something more of your life now that something has changed. All of that was gone season 2. It would have been gone regardless of the writers strike. And that was the magical, relatable, compelling part of season 1. Season 2 failed because it wasn't about a new group of heroes coming to terms with their powers.

It was painfully obvious that Tim Kring never had a plan for what to do with any of the main characters after the whole bomb thing. The show was trapped in painful loops. Claire and HRG ... were just ... kinda doing the same stuff. Claire was totally envisioned around the "Save the cheerleader" thing no arc imagined for her after that. Characters like Hiro/Peter/Sylar had powers that broke the narrative. That wouldn't have been a problem if their stories were allowed to end, but they got too popular.

In my opinion making the show anthology show was a big mistake from the start. When you have large ensemble cast with many great actors/actresses, audience will connect with them instantly. Do you honestly think majority of audience were gonna be ok if peter was killed off even when he was one of the most impactful characters? Lets not forget they did introduce some new characters in s2 and most of them were complete trash. As already pointed out Tim Kring never had a long term plan or backup plan for what to do with any of the main characters after s01. The show had a wonderful cast and yet on the show they hardly in scenes together. How many times hiro and peter had a scene together? or peter and claire? or hiro and claire? or mohinder and hiro?

  • @TheJadedJames

    @TheJadedJames

    8 ай бұрын

@@hasan_1888 I think Kring clearly built a lot of these characters with the assumption there would be 100 episodes of story about them. Peter, Hiro, and Sylar are ridiculously overpowered. Once you’ve gotten beyond the conceit that they aren’t good at their powers yet, they are basically gods. That is just the beginning of how this show just wasn’t sustainable with the same cast. If anything Season 2 needed to be like “Most of the original cast is gone. But Mohinder, HRG, and the Paper Company still exist. We are following mostly new characters with the potential for cameos. But the story is going to be a standalone thing you didn’t need to see Season 1 to enjoy”

I feel like right before the 2010s superhero boom was the last time a show like Heroes could have worked. Heroes was essentially a superhero show for people who don't like traditional superhero narratives. It took the concepts you'd see in comic books and presented them through the lens of a conventional drama. It would feel retrograde in an era where the mainstream more readily accepts comic book silliness.

Now, however, it has been around five years since I had regular tv (I use Chromecast) and most long standing franchises have gone too downhill for me to even watch them in theater (there is only one movie I want to see on big screen in the second half of this year). I remember watching season 1 as a teen back in 2006-7. Stories were very inspiring and motivational but after the raid on Bennett's house the plot became much more complex and convoluted but the finale was very impressive ! I knew Ali Larter from Final Destination, Adrian Pasdar from a supernatural tv show that was aired on French channel M6 as well as Stana Katic and Zachary Quinto from 24. It was absolutely mindblowing to see the latter going from nerdy tech support to total psychopathic villain ! My respect for him as an actor skyrocketed immensely. But I never watched any episodes from S2-4, just lost interest after that. I remember Tim Kring apologizing to the fans for the bad plots in the second season and promising more compelling stories after that.

Ah, Heroes. I stopped watching after season 2. I remember that I got the show before it's official DVD/TV release. I think I really liked season 1 but I was obviously a lot younger and that was years before streaming became available. So I was happy that I later got to borrow the DVD set from a friend because back then I didn't have access to tons of movies, series, spotify and youtube or high speed internet at home.

IIRC, one of the reasons Exodus was scrapped was that it did terribly with focus groups in the early stages, when they'd already prepared the "bad ending" to Generations where the virus gets out and had to change it late into development. Which is a shame, because dropping that also meant basically pretending everything Peter did in season 2 never happened.

Really liked it, and went into season 2 (on TV) with high expectations. The second season was such a letdown that I think I only lasted like 3 or 4 episodes before dropping out. Never picked it up again after that. Shame too, as the first season was so good. Still have the DVD set of the first season. I'm curious whether or not I'd still like it as much if I tried watching it again now.

I loved season 1 so much. It was amazing. For me the problems really came in when their powers were all of a sudden not natural and somehow an eclipse would de-power everyone, etc.. it was such a weird decision.. though they really did kinda backed themselves into a corner by making Peter able to absorb anyones powers he came into contact with.. which made him ridiculously OP. So since they kept the cast they needed to start monkeying with the power sets and it all went to hell. There are some good moments now and then in the later seasons but at the time it definitely seemed like the creators didn't have a plan fully conceived past season 1 and when it became so popular they had to rush to figure something out and it was never the same again.

I felt that the flaws of Heroes started in the first season, and that the second season ended up with a narrative debt that it couldn't overcome. It made for a good first season, but it didn't leave the show with anywhere to go unless it nerfed everyone's powers. While I think Season 2 could have been improved without the writer's strike, the fact is that the writers were present for the first 11 episodes, and yet those problems still remained.

This was at once one of the greatest superhero show ideas. And a sad tragedy that nonsense killed it if done right. That could have been another supernatural a legendary show good enough. To last nearly 20 years which is rare but still one of my favorite shows until this day. Though I will admit around season four and five the story got dry. It seemed mainly about hiro doing stupid crap simping for Charlie. Which ended up having a whole other life husband and kids and all. Which should be a message to some but yea that part made me hate hiro.

He didn't want to collect powers, he was addicted. Even though he knew it was wrong he still kept doint it because his power came with a need to understand everything which drove him to kill and collect powers. It's one of the things I liked about him, he was an ordinary person given a terrible hand which forced him to choose between suffering himself or harming others like a lot of criminals feel their situation is(justifying theft for example because they don't have money).

A.I. is definitely taking over the entertainment and creative industries. I used to do some pretty awesome art work with spray cans. BUT with A.I all you have to do is basically Google type your idea in and it makes it look great if not better than what you originally came up with. Then you can even build on top of that already inputted idea in the matter of minutes. When it would take my spray paint art 9 hours to make the cut outs and then I’d have to wait for the weather outside to be right, and it would take me like 2 days to complete a project. So it’s like speed and creativity are what A.I has which is bad for ppl employed in that field

But if they were able to go with their original idea of each season being a new batch of heroes (reminds me of how JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure does each season), that would be a really creative and amazing way to do it. It would keep each season unique and amazing while still being able to have call backs to previous seasons with either cameos or flashbacks.

I've just finished rewatching Season 2 and I watched the first episode of Season 3 yesterday. I actually found that, whilst short, I really enjoyed Season 2 (or most of it - Claire's subplot and the entire West character is trash and Nikki is completely superfluous in both S1&2). It actually feels like it reaches a satisfying, if rushed, conclusion to its main plot and the fact that the characters don't all convene in one place like in S1 is noticeable. Then you realise how so many plots didn't wrap up at all and S3 starts you and immediately realise they are never getting picked up again. I really noticed watching the first episode of the third season the drop in quality, with the only exception being the Claire and Sylar subplot, which is mostly due to the fantastic directing that the episode has. Everything else - Hiro's formula subplot, Mohinder's mad scientist streak and Nathan's religious awakening - feels like no one put any thought into them, they just threw darts at the wall to see what would stick and another draft of the script might have really helped.

I always see the culture of tv in America playing a huge factor too. Shows are renewed if they are popular, often keeping what is popular and outstaying their welcome. Compare this to UK tv, for example, where there are many examples of short, concise and high quality series (think fleabag and fawlty towers).
