    I'm surprised the first word on anime grossness wasn't - this is capitalism. Thats why dragon loli type anime gets made and proliferated. The artists and writers want to make scifi, dramas, mysteries, horror, like real novel worthy thought provoking avante garde art, but instead you get massive boobs, glass shattering voices and 10 year old waifus. The money men want that. The capitalsists are the ones making pureed anime

    or well, it's the most easy to sell thing for the least effort - lowest common denominator and all that. The money men know that well written stuff sells better, but it takes longer, there's various other risks with adaptations and fanbases, and even then it probably won't sell as well as 100+ episodes of generic jrpg fantasy harem garbage split between several shows. Cookie cutter waifus with each with a smattering of fetish bait and quirks aren't engaging characters but they can sure sell merch just about as well.

    considering that the poor working conditions (low wages, overwork, crunch, a reliance on freelancing/overseas contracting, etc.) is the anime industry's worst kept secret, i'm also surprised that "capitalism is capitalisming" isn't mentioned as a factor here as well, though their discussion is more of an "intro to anime" so i guess i'll let it slide. maybe they could tackle this more deeply in a future episode lol like, there was an announcement a few years back from a prominent japanese publisher who said that they're gonna push out 100 anime adaptations a year, and to me, that sounds like horrible news for animators considering the current state of the industry, where a decent studio is the exception. and well, if there's only so many Actually Good stories out there that could get a more than decent adaptation, at some point someone has to pad out those numbers by pulling from slightly less "literary" sources, like those bottom of the barrel "lol sex" ecchi manga or edgy webnovels

  • @Watashiwadeus

    @Watashiwadeus

    The fun part is that Dragon Maid was made by a studio which is famous for having pretty good working conditions for the industry and not pushing the authors into a certain corner. There are animation sweatshops out there - just look at Toei or Mappa. And if you want to talk about cookie cutter gross anime - the money is in Isekai right now and boy, do we get tons of male power fantasies each season

    I've been saying this, if u want the anime industry to stop putting out 10 cash grab, low effort shows for every 1 show that at the very least has a "soul"(a story that the creator genuinely cares about), then become a socialist. Personally I'm fine with even generic stuff, as long as I feel like the story wasn't created in a lab or by an AI to be the perfect level of unbearably mid(like Tsukimichi is fairly generic, but it has some interesting political commentary and MC isn't a Kirito clone). This goes for pretty much any art industry of course. Imagine how many Baldur's gate 3 we could have if video game corporations didn't squeeze the same exact formula without any real meaningful evolvement for decades(except for maybe graphics and sound design ig), as they continuously downsize their staff whilst paying them like shit(with the oddly frequent sexual harassment and whatnot ;-;).

Psycho Pass, Gundam Iron Blood Orphans, Black Lagoon seinen category anime that skips all that with interesting political and social subtext. Isekai genre is generally trash but one that is solid is Re:Zero, a reverse Isekai called Isekai Ojisan Sports anime is definitely beyond all that: Run Like the Wind, Haikyuu, Hajime no Ipo Sci-fi sport would be Megalo box Then there's historical fiction Golden Kamui and Kingdom Last would be slice of life/comedy: Hinamasturi, Shirobako, Skip to Loafer, Wave Kikoete, Sound of the Sky, One Punch Man.

    20:10 - Being a decent person is straightforward. Not being perceived as "creepy" is another matter entirely. Decency is about doing the right thing and being kind to people; "creepy", as far as I've ever been able to tell, is largely about vibes ("Just Be Normal!"). Vibes are a lot harder to fix.

  • @salutic.7544

    @salutic.7544

    6 ай бұрын

    The main thing is not letting perception get to you. If somebody is hyper focused on their perception it’s gonna create a lousy one in which people won’t be able to discern what’s actually you and this fake identity of yours. People recognize someone being genuine vs not. In this case of trying to be more approachable to women and not be creepy, this dichotomy finds itself and results in the guy coming off as not only creepy but now disingenuous. This is why you can’t really focus on perception solely, you gotta work on yourself at large before focusing on getting with somebody. It’s frustrating truth but also one people, especially men, have to approach honestly. This doesn’t even mean you have to be a perfect person that everyone will get along with amicably just assurance in yourself. Like if ur an ugly/socially awkward guy some people won’t care of your assurance and still lump you into this ‘creepy’ category, but you gotta live past that shit and not let it get to you.

    Tbh on the healthy messages in anime conversation (under the "fan service" details) a great example for young people is the anime "kenichi the mightiest desciple." It starts out following a teenager so... miserable that he is reading a book on how to make friends in preparation for his fiest say of highschool. He gets involved in this huge martial arts journey as part of the plot but the real messaging really hits home. It wasnt about hitting people, it was about dedicating himself to something, having true moral principles that he will stand up for and putting himself out there. In the end he has the truest best cadre of friends anyone could ask for. But theres a subtle sub story. Kenichi was the kid who was bullied for being "weak" but there was also Nijima who was outcast for being just weird. The world hated his weirdness and he hated it right back. He only thinks of dominating others, usually by manipulating them. He uses kenichi's growing reputation to found a gang of misfits and puts on a fake face of caring. Everything he does is entirely self interest including savinf them from bad situations but he finds... for the first time in his life someone actually likes him... and in the end he winds up liking them back and caring about their fate. For nijima, responsibility for others taught him empathy and gained him the first real friends he ever had.

    I get what you mean JT and I dont watch anime as an adult because a lot of it is pervy. But two amazing ones I'd recommend for you: Code Geass: a really interesting take on political theory. Has some themes of revolution vs. reform and the concepts of vanguardism (depending on your perspective, you might see it as falling into great man theory and the white savior trope, tho). I suspect the heavy political questions is why Hakim recommends. Full metal alchemist: Brotherhood: it goes indepth on some profound concepts in eastern philosophy and was instrumental in getting me into Taoism. It's also the best depictions of imperialism and its cycle of violence I've ever seen in anime. Theres a superpower in FMA brotherhood that is such an amazing juxtaposition of the USA and its "senseless" bloodlust. I really recommend these; if you were looking for a more self serving reason to watch anime i think theres a lot of amazing communist content you could make by analyzing these two anime. Ps. Death note is a great place to start too.

    @@user-ws6qt8vl1j I really don't see it. The first three seasons keep falling over themselves in trying to tell you in as many ways as they can, that: 1) Military juntas good, actually. All the normal politicians and administrators in the show are portrayed as corrupt weasels. But the military officers are honorable and just, and the most reasonable of those officers is literally based on a war criminal of imperial Japan. 2) Monarchism is natural and necessary. The in-universe lore literally states that royals have special blood that gives them powers over regular human beings. 3) That to win you have to be able to sacrifice your basic humanity. To fight monsters you must be able to become monster. It's really close to the fascist "no cost is too great for victory" trope, and only works because before season 4, the viewer has no idea what's going on. And I really don't like the way season 4 tries to weasel itself out of the earlier established themes, because it comes across as really unconvincing.

    Excellent interview! I hope FD Signifier returns and becomes a regular guest. I just watched his anime and masculinity deep dive video right before listening to this, and was blown away by how good it was. Full disclosure: I actually put off watching it (I think the thumbnail changed 4 times before I finally started it 😅), partly because of a passing comment he made in an earlier, completely unrelated, video about 'Tenchi Muyo!' that made me seriously doubt how much he'd have to say about anime in general, but, boy, was I way waaayy off. It was awesome, and I walked away with a list of new titles I need to check out post-haste. The dude's content, if nothing, has consistently surprised me in the best ways possible. On the topic of JT's pending anime/weebo conversion 😉 I recommend the Studio Ghibli films in general, but in particular, 'Princess Mononoke' and 'Spirited Away' (assuming he hasn't seen either one already). And for another good starter series, try the 2003 anime adaptation of 'Fullmetal Alchemist' plus the feature-length follow-up 'Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa' which picks up where the series leaves off. And, if JT sees and likes 'FLCL' (aka "Fooly Cooly"), then he might want to give 'Paranoia Agent' a gander. It's only 13-episodes but is beautiful (though YMMV), dense, and packs one heckuva' punch.

For manga, Berserk is magnificent though it can take awhile for it to hit as it changes over time with the author but the art is incredible throughout (it inspired much of the dark souls art direction).

    It's ironic and very sad that one of the anime JT liked because it didn't have sexualized lolis is the one by an actual (under)charged pdf file. I loved Rurouni Kenshin for this reason too and I could recommend it especially to teen girls wanting a Shonen that wasn't hostile to our existence but no he actually was. Creation and consumption of fiction, as gross as one can find it, really isn't a metric for probability to do harm. So always be vigilant of *_actions/behaviors_* around minors especially in your IRL community.

    Problem with anime is that it never provides a useful solution for any of the existential problems presented in the anime; they're all solutions that lead back to the status quo. "one day you'll accept yourself and find joy in work and life" or "at least you experienced friendship once in your life and even if you have to say goodbye remember you had those friends once." It gives you nostalgia and isolation. It will kill the fire of revolution in you. Not sure if the are some actual communist anime artists but in my experience it's always the same: Back to the status quo, and how to cope with it. Nevermind some are just fascist fantasies. And all the bad behaviours aren't punished; some are expected, and some are laughed at. "Haha, he loves touching girls and being a pervert, so funny." It always belongs a thermian argument. "well in this world it's normal" - Thermian argument. I still watch it, but the same way I watch the lord of the rings. Compartmentalised.

    "Shingeki no Kyojin" (Attack on Titan) is a damn good anime. I suggest watching in Japanese due to the... very passionate yelling, which just doesn't translate well to English. None of that uncomfortable stuff in a lot of anime. Another I didn't hear you mention was "Legend of Korra", which is a sequel to "Avatar the Airbender". "One Piece' by is amazing (and very long, 1000+ episodes). "Girls' Last Tour" (Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou) turned out to be decent, too.

    The anime that actually is the starting reason of me becoming a socialist/communist is "the Saga of Tanya the Evil". It has a theme of showing the negatives of capitalism in a war setting if I want to just simplify it. I would say the novel did it more than the anime. I don't know if the author fully meant it since I don't know much about the author. But the author also wrote about a story about a few communists trying to save their country of republics from splitting apart from nationalists. Sounds familiar to a real-world event.

    @@stormysoup1083 yeah it was disappointing when I found out how reactionary the majority of the fan base was when I first interacted with it. I would say like any other war media it will most likely get misinterpreted no matter how anti-war it is. I mean just look at “all quiet on the western front”. I get why the US audience doesn’t see much since the US has used jingoism to get things they want. Making a lot of Americans think they are fighting for a “cause”. Which the series also makes fun of. This is my explanation for the us audience tho.

A 40-something salary man with an extremely abusive and exploitative workplace dies and ends up a in a new world because gods liked him and wanted him to seem happy. And then he makes good friends, starts a less exploitative business, shows care for his employees and continues to talk to gods who actually like him. 10/10 idyllic feel-good after a lonely and terrible day stuff PS everyone needs to see Madoka

It's delightfully wholesome, the visuals are breathtaking, and the characters feel real (I swear, the writers vividly remember what being 6 years old was like). Another one would be Keep your hands off Eizoken. Basically, an Anime about Anime. So if you're looking to have your mind changed, that one might be good. And as others have mentioned, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
