As someone said to me recently “owning a Defender is like peeing yourself, everyone can see it but only you can feel the warm sensation you get from it”. I have a fiat panda that before Christmas the timing chain snapped prematurely and I have had to spend a lot of money to get her back on the road, I know it’s hard but worth it. I share a defender 90 with my dad and she is our play thing but we have spend many hundreds of hours driving her on road and off road, she does need work like a bulkhead but she gives us so much pleasure. Land Rovers a built no bought.

It's a situation many of us have had to face recently with 20+ year old Defenders. My advice is just not to cut corners with quality parts and please please "Paint The Chassis"! properly before assembling if you want it to last & spray all internal cavities with Dinitrol or Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50 and it will still be around for your kids to love & appreciate!

I'm putting a new galv chassis on my 300, is it really necessary to paint a galv one straight off? I was planning on under sealing it at some point but am I correct in assuming that basically nothing sticks to galvanisation?

@@jamesward6460 I've got a galvanised chassis on ours, Waxoyl, Dinitrol, underbody protection, lanoline products such as Lanoguard they all stick, it is paint that peels off you have to prime it with primer for galvanised metal first then paint on top of that.

Just found your channel. It’s crazy but true, how you can become so attached to a vehicle that it becomes a part of the family. We have a Jeep Wrangler that I’ve told my wife, when the dictators of the world take away our gasoline, I will put it in the living room! I also recently bought a 1966 Series2A, that is fast becoming a family pet. Fortunately my Landy was still in daily use here in California and is rust free. It will be fun to follow along.👍

I think once the chassis and the bulkhead arrives, and you have an initial list of parts to be replaced, (suspension, brakes, strut towers etc.) a complete strip down (if that's the route you're going!) will be a good place to start. This will uncover most of the hidden issues, and give you a working list of jobs. Getting a rolling chassis will be a big thing, and a really good aim for the first "stage" of the build- then engine and gearbox, then bulkhead, then the rest of the body on top. Oh, and if you need/want an extra pair of hands, or want someone who's a dab hand with the welder, I'm more than willing to make the long trek from Horsens to help you out!

Welcome back! Owning a Defender is an ongoing challenge, but the joy of driving one is worth every expense. I have owned quite a few over the years and sold them when I have had to spent money on other things, I have regretted selling every one! I now have a 1985 ex military 90, fortunately I have a very understanding wife and most fixes I can do myself. Although at the moment it is having a new head gasket fitted but my local Land Rover specialist 🙄🙄Please continue the channel and the chassis replacement, looking forward to the upcoming videos, yours is one of my favourite channels. Happy to see that you have decided to get her back on the road. I’ve been in a similar dilemma for almost 4 years, but finally just before Christmas I decided to put in the effort to get mine back on the road. Since that, I’ve had the engine out, stripped, fixed and cleaned all that was needed. New LOF cutch and spent countless of hours learning how to weld to fix the chassis issues. Now that’s done and the rebuild can slowly begin. Unfortunately I still have some major cosmetic things to fix and finally repaint. Just before I took the car off the road I installed some Fox Performance 2.0 IFP and OME springs with a bit of a lift and damn it felt great both on road and off road. Highly recommend that combo. Anyway. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

My dog used to react the same way when he saw we were heading towards the Lada Niva (kind of the Russian Defender, best way to put it I think). He passed away a month and a half ago, and I'll forever associate the Niva with him. Great content by the way, subscribed pretty much at the first video I watched!

Great decission! I have the same situation and am now about £7k in to my full restoration. I'm enjoying the process more than driving it so my advice is to take your time and do it right. And, share it with us.

As a suggestion, if you consider the Suzuki Jimny , check out the new four door model a far more practical option in my opinion. My first 4WD was a 1980 Jeep CJ7 diesel two door (short wheel base) and in 2007 I bought a four door JK Wrangler which is twice as practical simply because of the amount of space inside to carry stuf around. I am also the great full owner of a 1996 Landrover defender 300 TDI, flat tray Ute as they are called here in Oz 🦘. Just like you I just love it, having had great adventures with it over my 26 years of ownership despite its shortcomings I will keep it till I have to quit driving. In Australia you can buy a product called Fishoilene which I use for corrosion protection. I have sprayed the chassis of the Laro inside and out with this product also inside the doors and after all these years there is zero rust in the vehicle because Fishoilene, after it has dried, forms a tough coating unlike wax type coatings which stay soft.

I'll follow this with much interest. I have come to Defender ownership at a much greater age, and the 90 TD5 I've bought is, touch wood, in very find bodywork as well as mechanical condition. I now. at 58, ccouldn't even begin to contemplate being without one. But it's good to hear you'll be back posting more often with your progress. As to the Jimny, they seem to hold their value well here, so it may not be too expensive to have for six months, but obviously a lot of outlay all at the same time. Good luck!

Sounds like you've found a great example! Definitely worth holding on to. I had the same though regarding Jimnys, the values seem to be steady here too. Actually depreciation is less of an issue in general I think, as people tend to keep cars for a long time (due to the cost of new ones), so mileage doesn't tend to scare people off as much, and there is less impact on values.

Just watched your video. Love the Defender so have subscribed to watch the restoration when it comes about 🤞🏻 . Thinking of a Jimny myself so if you do get one it'll be win win viewing. Good luck.

I drove Landis in the Sahara, I own a new Jimny because it gives me so much of Landi feel but with the best of modernity and none of the bad of.no feel, no character.

You can now buy a new bulkhead TD5 style without the opening air vents so allows you to fit a Puma dash and the better heater unit.

You can change the chassis and bulkhead easily in 2 weeks, just have everything ready and it’s quite easy, good opportunity to clean down the engine and gearbox while you’re at it so it’s easier to find the inevitable leaks

I've still got my 1995 110, but due to ULEZ I traded a Citroen van for the Jimny, you'll love it. Yes it's small and noisy, but you've got back to basics usefulness that you get in the old Defender. It's a cracking daily drive and other Jimny drivers wave back too!

Apologies for the long comment. Just want to start by saying that when I was a lot younger it was your channel that sparked my interest in 4x4’s. It was always my dream to own a defender after seeing all the amazing mods you could do, the modular simplicity of them and ultimately the character perfectly displayed in your just defender things videos. Unfortunately I never could fit comfortably in a defender. Way to tall I would hit my knees on steering wheel even with seat and steering wheel modifications. I settled on a discovery 2 and loved every minute of it but had to get rid of it due to rust as well. They are cheap enough in the UK so a repair wasn’t much worth it but I really loved that vehicle. I lost my passion for old 4x4’s and got a modern sports car which was fun but it lacked that charm and character I craved from my teenage years. I’ve sold it and bought a 80 series Toyota landcruiser and also plan to keep it forever like your defender. It is so precious to me and reignited that spark that motor vehicles should bring. Ultimately I just want to say thank you so much for this channel over the years, it was you guys who ignited that spark for me, it was you guys who encouraged me to go to my first LRO (I said hi to you both!) and it was you guys who’s passion resonated with me the most. I’m so pleased you’re going to rebuild the old girl and I hope you have a wonderful few decades with her. All the best.

Having just changed the rear tub on my 110 it is a faff doing all the big work YRM have fantastic kits for it which is super helpful. We also hired a Jimny on a recent ten day trip around iceland it was a brilliant little car just didnt like steep hills fast roads or really strong winds but had fantastic heating and heated seats

i'm happy for you, my def is probably one close brother of your (made i0n 02/2000), but the italian weather was much more gentle on my chassis. but anyway one day i will have to change my chassis too, and maybe with your videos to help.

I am intrigued about the estate you drive on and use the farm buildings. Are they in Ness s family.

All good practical reasons and I think that a rebuild with new galve chassis and bulkhead is the only way forward. So you are on the right track. I suspect there will be lots of upgrades that find their way into the process. This is a great opportunity for us to watch the renovation/upgrade as it unfolds. Have you ever met a a Defender owner who does not regret selling his vehicle? The Jimny is a great little vehicle but I would rather put that money into the rebuild.

It is a big project you have taken on, but one step at a time and you will get it done.

Am mid build on a 200 90. Chassis and bulkhead. There are lots of extra bits needed but still worth doing. Even for Ireland, your road tax is atrocious. My pal brought her Maybach to where you are, and the tax to register/shipping etc, was 100k euro! You have the right accent perhaps to find a 1984 90 in UK, rebuild it there, using your "donor" parts. Then next year, it will be tax exempt. Swanny about where you are, on a UK plate. Zero Tax, zero MOT and someone like Heritage may insure it for sub 200 quid per annum. Having said that. With the estate you have at your disposal, who would want to drive it on the roads!

We have many people from Europe, specifically German, Swiss & Brits who bring their 4x4 vehicles out to SA and Namibia and come out for a month or so every year to tour Southern and Eastern Africa when Europe is frozen and we are sunny and warm. They always seem to make friends in rural towns where they can leave their vehicle safely of rent a lockup garage for storage. The fees are small compared to your road tax let alone MOT or equivalent. In SA once you have road worthy certificate the onus is on you to keep your vehicle road worthy and certification only happens when you sell the car

Looking forward to seeing the progress, the increase in value of old Defenders should help to balance the costs in man-math terms even if you never sell it. That tax bill is scary though, I have freinds all over Europe telling me how life is better in their country but as a car enthusiast the UK really isn't the worst place for cost and regulations. Is there any kind of tax exemption in Denmark? The Jimny is a great idea but if you can't stretch to it, old Freelander 1s are really at their lowest value now. I've enjoyed my Td4 as a winter runabout for a couple of years and it has cost me very little, it's very comfortable compared to my lifted Discovery. They aren't as bad as we all thought, they're actually quite charming.

Denmark is great for a lot of things but their car tax system is nonsensical, and yes the UK is a great place to be a petrolhead, a fact I think many over there take for granted. The only positive with the Danish system is that once a car turns 35 it gains "Veteran" status which then means the road tax is heavily reduced and inspection is only required every 7 years. However, my Defender will only turn 25 this year so still 10 years of paying full price road tax to go...

Had mine done over the summer period (I didn't do it myself). First dilemma was if the galv chassis should be painted/coated. I ended up having mine powdercoated by the manufacturer. (apparently they do it twice). Once off, every faster was replaced with stainless. The cross members on mine were rotten (not even whole) and all needed replacing. Shocks and springs replaced (needed on the rear, did the whole lot). brake lines, and all flex hoses I replaced with the braided ones. Mine is a 110 crew cab, I had alloy rot in the rear tray and real floor. I did not get that done at that time, but in hindsight, I should have.

Had landys for 25 yrs always full rust treatment chassis doors bulk head when bought ,touch up all the time ,then redone every few ,it's the only way to keep the rust away

I'm just in the process of gathering parts for my chassis swap on a TD5 90. full suspension overhaul is worth doing, brake lines and any repair panels its the bulk of it. I was fortunate not to need a new bulkhead.

I have a Opel Astra 2.0L euro 1998 model I have him 21 years already he is apart of the family I also have a td5 defender spend more in 2 years on my defender than what i spend on my Astra in the last 21 years butt I do love my Defender.

You ask. Advice..my tuppence worth. Go bog standard, refurbish as much as u can and standard parts are cheap (the chassisand bulkhead are a big spend) Once its on the road, tested and driven a while...all those recently replaced parts will slide off handy to replace with upgrade items as you find you need in the future. Fresh bolts and grease etc make parts easier to change. Good luck.. During my rebuild here, i am flabbergasted to see how much parts prices have risen since.i built (pre retirement from 30 years of) my last defender 10 years ago. Not counting the refurbishment (with galv bulkhead, 3.5 mazda, automatic, and range rover brakes) etc, ony 1985 110 H/T, 2 years ago.

Good luck with your project. Be aware of Suzuki Jimny, it can rust very quickly (need to be dismantled and apply anti corrosion coat when it is new). Also, the price went absolutely skyrocket. It could be a good investment but need TLC after buy 🤣

Had you considered acquiring an older shape Jimny to 'scratch that itch' in a much more budget friendly way? Still great fun on and off road, just maybe not so cool looking!

If you start this projekt do it right. Once all is apart replace every part thats probably has worn out. Like engine and gearbox-mounts, suspension bushes, brake lines... For brakes i recommend LOF Power-Spec. glad you made the decision

I think you should finish the interior, ie headlining, side trim. The rest is all good

Best of luck with doing all of the DEFENDER work you have outlined in your video! Breaking a Land Rover "Series" vehicle down to the chassis, I know from my own experience back in the 1970's, is an easy job. It's easy but it is time consuming. I'd strongly advise you to go with all new fittings (bolts, nuts, washers, lock washers, etc.). I'd also advise all new suspension bits and pieces Ditto, brake parts. (When I owned Land Rovers I always used only genuine parts. Although I've been out of the Land Rover business since 1986, and haven't myself owned a Land Rover of any type or any year since 1995 or 1996, I still advise friends and former customers to "use genuine Land Rover parts." Replacement chassis frames are made by Marsland Chassis in the U.K. While this may not appear to be a "genuine Land Rover part," I believe the Marsland chassis is every bit the equal---if not better chassis---than the originals were that came out of the Rover factory. You can order your Marsland chassis to be hot galvanized. You can also order it to be powder coated. In areas of high rust, the galvanized/powder coated chassis may be the best way to go. (If you've already ordered your replacement chassis from Marsland, and if it hasn't been built yet, or, perhaps, even if it has, you can change your order so that the one you buy will be galvanized and powder coated. I'd strongly advise that you talk to the experts at Marsland and seek their advice. Those folks know what they are doing probably better than anyone else now living. They certainly know more about Land Rover chassis' than I do.) Doing a frame up restoration will take plenty of time. It'll cost a tidy fortune to do it if you do it right, and if you use as much of your own labor as possible. But when you get the work all done, the finished product, YOUR Land Rover, will make you love the vehicle even more than you now do. I've liked all of the videos you've made. Keep up the excellent work making these! And, by all means, keep all of your many fans, such as myself, fully informed of your restoration project as you progress with it. You might be advised to NOT set up deadlines. I started researching a book on Pearl Harbor (the events of 7 Dec. 1941) and U.S. entry into WWII a little over two years before I left the Land Rover/Rover business. I've done a massive amount of research. I'm still working on my first book and hope---hope---to get it finished this year. I told my parents back in 1988, "I'll have the book written in six months." When my late father was on his death bed in July 2004, he told me: "My greatest disappointment with you is that you didn't get your book written during my lifetime." That hurt a bit at the time and still does to this day. On the other hand, my opinion is that when writing a book, a potentially extremely important book on a historical topic, historical accuracy is far more important than trying to please one's parents, spouse, friends and viewers! I admire you for deciding to keep your Defender. I greatly admire you for making a strategically thought out decision that eventually led to your decision to restore the very vehicle that you own. This to me reflects the LOVE you have in your Land Rover Defender. Make all of us proud with the vehicle you restore! Yes all defender drivers become attached to there vehicles regardless of there faults,got a td5 90 18 years old from new now running on a Q4 turbo and still going strong.

For suspension I Cant recommend enough Alive tuning comfort springs and fox shocks and the extra thick rear anti role bar It Makes driving turning braking changing gear cornering so much better my best upgrade ever

@@TirsbaekTV so far yes I’m no hard core off roader just the odd byway green lanes The springs coils are progressive rather than the OE all set at the same spacing. So the little bumps as soaked up which makes the ride more comfortable. Kind of like falling on a mattress as apposed to falling on the floor when you go over bumps. It takes all the harshness out. It’s still defender style though don’t expect Range Rover comfort.

I too am in a similar position, had to park up my defender for the next few years whilst I am at university. Sure I have a much comfier car to drive instead, there's no match for the joy of a defender!

You’ve used Gwyn Lewis before, best place to start for suspension and suspension hardware….good luck

My 2 German shepherds relate to my Defender the same way your pet does. I have a 2006 TD5 110 pickup. Every time I go around to the tailgate end of it, the dogs get very excited thinking that they are going for a round. They try to jump into it. If I by chance happen to open the tailgate, they push me out of the way and get in somehow. It is hilarious. With my car, they don’t even bother! They don't want to know 😁

I'd likely convert it to a traile camper and buy something to pull it with a new/old defender

Hi I think it’s a great choice! Please be aware that when changing a chassis of a car in Denmark the car loses its “identity” in regards to tax. This means that after the chassis change you will have to pay a new registration fee to the government. This is about the same as if you were importing the car. My guess is that this will amount to somewhere between 40.000 to 60.000 kr in your case. You can apply online beforehand so you’ll will know the exact amount. How do I know this… I’m from Denmark and I have done a chassis change on my 1996 Defender. I did also convert from a van to a 5 seater. I paid 85.000 kr for this in registration fee 3 years ago….

My D2 TD5 is the family pet... Find a Jimny to test drive and take it on the freeway for 30mins... you'll be cured. Great everywhere else though.

If you mean instead of a Jimny, the Grenadier is much more expensive (closer to a New Defender in fact). Also it is not yet available in Denmark, though I'd love to try one.

Greetings from a 77 year old Land Rover fan (no longer owner) in Canada. We know all about rust here in the salt belt called southern Ontario. I admire your decision to rebuild, however, I shake my head at the annual registration costs. I think I'd move.

Defenders are such weird beasts. Have a similar dilemma with mines. Don't use it enough to justify having it, but can't get rid of it. Both expensive (tax, fuel, rust, etc) and cheap (I own it!) to run. Both insanely practical and insanely impractical. Worth peanuts if I tried to sell it or worth more than I paid for it, depending on where I look or who I speak to! Do I chuck money at it, or leave it as is? Best and worst car I've had! Argh!!!

Probably all the defenders owners have had the same feelings sometime in our life. I bought mine like a hobby, no regrets, but I'm tired of spending money with cyclic repairs. It's a very old design, with a lot of leaks (not only of oil). Good for nostalgics, but for me it's time to change it by a more safe and reliable toyota.
