The Deepest Overpowered Anime Villain - Griffith from Berserk

Фильм және анимация

I discussed overpowered characters for a while, recently from newer shows like escanor from seven deadly sins or all might from hero academia... none are quite the masterpiece like Guts from Berserk and that video took a while to make, im really glad you seemed to enjoy it and I hope you'll enjoy this one just as much if not more, this completes my analysis on the driving force of berserk... this is my overpowered analysis on Griffith... hope you enjoy...

Griffith is only a hero by his own artificial dishonest means. He created his own little marionette show and he's pulling the strings with his ghastly powers while he himself is unspeakably wicked. Guts is true, through and through. He is constantly fighting, kicking and screaming his ass against what seems like an inevitable fate.

There's a segment in the manga where Griffith is shown the life he could have had, when marrying Casca. Griffith accepted it, in that moment. It was only when shown the contrast, that the vision with Casca had any psychological weight to it. Griff IS simple. But not in the way this vid postulates. He is incapable of understanding his own personality or motivations. He ascribes worth to actions; to achievement. Without his kingdom, without his dream, what is he but the street urchin playing in the shadow of the castle he so deeply longed for? For Griff, the ends DO justify the means. But the really obvious hangup people seem to have with this is that they're incapable of thinking about Berserk in a morally ambiguous way, in spite of the fact that both the protag and antagonist do good and bad, interchangeably, *all the time*. Griff was pressured into doing things he truly did not want to do - that caused him emotional turmoil - for the sake of his men and his 'dream'. He taught himself to discard his emotion, to take on the best qualities of a leader and to inspire hope and passion in his men. Griff moulded himself to be perfect. He learned of warfare, etiquette, mathematics, poisons, logistics, even sex positions - in anticipation of the moment that he would need to impress his wife. Griff denied himself humanity at every turn. And he rationalised it away as a pursuit of his dream; the only thing remaining in him that he could ascribe worth to. And so powerfully, did his desires burn, that he defined worth in others the same way. At least, this is what he thought. He met Guts. And he admired Guts. He found kinship; and grew to care for Guts. This, from the boy who had discarded everything human in himself. And lo: once he found a human attachment, his dream became... less important. Griff had found something that, in some strange way, was more important than his dream. Or at least *as* important. Guts turning his back on the Band did not destroy Griff because he was spoiled; or because he lost a duel. It destroyed Griff because Griff lost the only living thing he had ever resonated with. His dream was static - a castle in the distance. Guts was real. And the shock of losing something real crippled him, emotionally. It's only because the Godhand helped Griff rationalise his sacrifices, that Griff could go through with the Eclipse. Without appeals to logic and the 'greater good' (in this case, sacrificing the members of the hawk instead of the dream (and countless others) could be considered a greater good), Griffith may never have made the choice to sacrifice his men. Let alone Guts, himself.

People who watch the anime and movies cannot taken to accounts what happened in chapter 97, just before the eclipse. Griffith while carrying the dead apprentice soldier says "i wont apologized! Whatever happens i wont ask forgiveness...for i never could be forgiven". He knews and fully realized, but in his conditions (weak, crippled etc), he cannot obtained his goals, that so many people had died because of it, while knowing many more will die because of it. It is situations of "damned if you do, damned if you don't". For the people that just says griffith is evil, hope to heaven and hell you will not face the same situations.

you would be right, but the thing is during the scene where Griff decides to sacrifice everyone including Guts, he realizes that Guts was the reason why it came to this he, at the last moments of his humanity, realized Guts wasn't a tool for his dream, but the only thing that stood between him and his dream. So Griffith achieved his dream of creating a super-empire, banishing the supernatural evil and creating a utopia where human and Apostle live together in harmony, and had a 100% approval rating by his subjects? Ok. If Griffith now has everything he always wanted, where does he go from here? He's untouchable by Guts- if Guts killed him, the world would basically fall apart, so does this story end with the villain having a complete victory? Or does Griffith want even MORE power than being the leader of the #1 nation in the world? The only step I can think of is that he would be willing to sacrifice all his subject to get divine power to recreate the entire planet, or even the universe, in his image. HE'S NEVER HAPPY WHERE HE IS! If he could sacrifice falconia or even the entire world just to reach his next objective he would do it, so, if the end justifies the means, it doesn't apply to griffith because he has no real end, also he's become completely evil, yeah guys, he joined the godhand and left behind all his human emotions (even anger, yet he still raped casca for no reason) so he can't be good, he might have been before but not anymore

So the way I see it, (and this is one of the reasons I love Berserk so damn much, because I feel such a deep connection and understanding to both sides) Griffith was destined for greatness, nothing else really mattered, that destiny pulled him forward and in keeping up with it he had to slowly chip away at his humanity, he had to make himself cold and unfeeling. This is best shown when he's bathing in the rivier after sleeping with ganon for money. You see him struggle with it, wrestle with the person he's becoming. But he has to move forward, his feelings, the feelings of others, they're nothing compared to his dream. That feeling of being destined for something, for everyone else it might seem like it's the ends justifying the means but for the person doing it, you get swept up in fate and divorce yourself from any empathy. It's this calm cold breeze you flow with, as you know that this means nothing, nothing else matters. That's how I see Griffith.

A key point of Griffith for me is that he's entirely selfless - entirely, we see plainly he gave up his body (no one I know would ever accept to be sodomized for any personal gain) AND SOUL not for himself but for a mission - an intuition. This intuition must be that any human, anyone, can do anything and make heaven and hell bend to their will if they're devoted enough, and his ideal was a glorious kingdom ruled in justice and honour, far from any "material" interests that kill any ideology - a kingdom from a fairy tale, straight from raw ideals, a kingdom of heaven. He didn't know what fate had for him and the kingdom he envisioned, but in fact should he fail the whole kingdom would have been utterly eradicated, its people slaughtered and enslaved by, not only a foreign power, but a satanic power totally beyond the strength of any man to destroy. So for me Griffith is a "promethean" character : he "stole the fire" from the gods, he took their power, but from then on, only serve his ideal, and not himself. He allowed himself to sacrifice the band of the hawk because he sacrificed himself just the same and for the very ideal they had of equality of chances, and because they already sacrificed their lives by going to war - except for Casca's rape which was a very personal wrong. The god hand totally agree with him because as explained by the Idea of Evil they're subjected to what men want : they give men what they want, be it lust, power, war, and men did want what they offered ! There are still women wanting to bring men to their knees before them under their power through lust and jealousy (just look at Nina) and men like Zodd wanting nothing else than eternal violence and dominance over other men. Men don't know what they do here but they are not innocent in this ! If now humans want to be "freed by the divine", then it is human will and the god hand must obey and will help - that's all. They exist only by the free will of men. That's why to overcome them Skull Knight has very little room of action - he must abide to the same rules of the psychic, causal plane humans are governed by and unknowingly govern. From what I can see in the story the god hand don't even manipulate anything ! They exist "within the laws of causality" i.e from what is desired, and are certainly not judgmental, they will only give to one the extent of what he can grasp. Griffith had to get supernatural power to face supernatural ennemies, and in truth, I can see how in his eyes Guts doesn't even begin to matter - but he wasn't the one to create the apocalypse, the wars of the kushan invasion, the civil wars, the poverty, the courts and assassinations he partakes in, that's the world mankind created. Griffith was the one born containing the desire of his entire people, and the one destined to materialize it, and that he surely does. From the get-go you see how he masters any dark art humankind partakes in, so seeing him as a demon is no surprise. You can see how the "demons" dream themselves : some apostles behave like true knights, and knights they are, knowing even honour. As you said in the video if Griffith sees himself as a just ruler nothing prevents him from doing exactly that. Achieving it turned the world upside down, which was to be expected, and as anyone in this story, you're free to hate him or love him. He's free not to care. With that being said, I still hate to love him and love to hate him, but this story is clearly beyond Griffith, to me it's about how we humans create and are responsible for the world we live in. Finally to quote Griffith : "Gods... or demons ? Aren't they the same thing ?" in Berserk they are, they just very humanly decide what they do with their lives. Griffith loves both mankind and apostles, recognizes consciousness everywhere and as such incarnates the "Absolute", because his love and will extends through all realities. Skull knight to me is still the greater "good" here - he has the wisdom, and represents what humans would do if they knew what they were dealing with, contrary to the god hand who exploits the "gap" between human conscious humanity and unconscious divinity.

Well, two major mistakes here. 1) Apostles are not a different race. They are humans who have chosen to ditch their humanity in order to gain monster powers. A race is something that people are born into and their race doesn't determine their actions. (And besides, this is exactly why discrimination and profiling is wrong: because peoples' race doesn't determine their actions.) Apostles become apostles by choice and their choice results in their actions that become, accordingly, evil. So your entire "anti-discrimination" slur is plain bullshit. 2) Falconia is not a paradise for the entire humanity. It's a paradise within the borders of Griffith's reign while the rest of humanity is left at the mercy of monsters (ha-ha). The world used to be a place of mixed good and evil; then after putting up only one spiritual tree instead of many, Griffith has provided surreal good to his surroundings while the rest of the world is swallowed by surreal evil from which he then bravely saves some survivors. (A selfish bastard through and through IMAO) But otherwise, of course we can't get enough of Griffith videos on KZread.

@enji endeavor todoroki It's probably because it's not KZread anymore. Unfortunately, this place has changed from what it was originally supposed to be. It was to be a place for the community, for the individual; a change to do what you love as a job, a chance at fame by doing something you enjoy. It was very much KZread. But now, it's OURtube, a place for the companies, big groups that own lots of copyrighted content. It's a place for the masses instead of the individual. Single KZreadrs that don't get paid much at all, are constantly copystriked and de-monitised, cannot stand up to large groups with more money (eg: T-series) because of things like Copyright and the quantity of content per week. KZread no longer pays people right off the bat, they have to be above a certain level of subscribers before they are eligible to be paid. It used to be that nothing short of punching a baby on screen would get you de-monitised, now you get de-monitised for anything KZread can find an excuse for. It used to be people could see dislikes on comments, yet now people can't even do that because some people got their feelings hurt. KZread is slowly caving in upon itself. It's not KZread anymore.

Guts and Griffith are the 2 best written characters in history not just in anime but in everything they are the work of art and I love both of them Griffith may be somewhat evil but I cannot forget the time he and Guts spent in the Hawks when I saw his state after he was rescued I needed to pause for a half hour to cry man I don't blame him at all for throwing away his humanity. I can never hate someone who changed because of the selfish acts of others. This anime is burned into my heart Griffith and Guts thought me what the meaning of life is. As an atheist I did not believe in faith but Griffith one who threw away his humanity said he refuses to believe there is no purpose to life made me realize that my believes should not limit my ambitions and hope. As for Guts he reminds me of myself(not the basass part) but a person who has no dream... He opened my eyes and made me search for a reason to live other then to just not die. This Story is a bloody masterpiece and I don't think its possible to create better characters than Guts and Griffith.

I just see Griffith as a lonely child with grand dreams. I think his lack of empathy stemmed from his inherent nature as a person, he was dazzling and approachable and I think that would isolate him. His lack of empathy in my eyes stemmed from how little he was able to relate with his peers as a result of being who he was. I think the first person he was able to relate to was the boy dying and that shocked him to the point that he started to see at least some value in the lives of his men. He just seemed like he'd never stopped being that kid in the streets chasing the dream of reaching the castle. I think what he did at the eclipse was just the desperate last attempt at his dream rather than anything grandiose since he has already sacrificed so much that giving up at that point would make the lives he had begun to value mean naught. Plus the best future he could envision was with Casca and I'd sacrifice them too if my options were be a poor cripple with a tsundere wife or be a God

I think Griffith didn't realize that he never really wanted an equal or a friend. He just thought he did. Guts respected Griffith enough to want his respect and in doing so learned his own sense of self - respect. And as much as Griffith talked big about wanting an equal with self respect and ambition and how much Guts and the band meant to him, he couldn't stand losing Guts as an asset or worse, risk having to face Guts on the field somewhere down the line. The band was a sacrifice, meaning that he cared or at least thought he cared about them enough for them to count as a significant sacrifice. He just cared more about his goals.

While there have been some great videos regarding Griffith with that narrative in mind I always found the argument weird because he definitely sacrificed everyone before he knew that Falconia would be a thing.

I appreciate your thoughts and delineation of the character and specially in contrast of his importance and the narrative. However I think a dynamic between Guts and Griffith and his fundamental psychology in regards to that relationship...is a bit off. I feel like what's more grounded in cognitive dissonance and that he truly did love and care about guts, but only became aware that when they parted. He saw it as weakness as it was the reason for his foolish decision and when he got the chance stripped himself of that feeling and with it , his humanity. Just as you said, but I do honestly believe that Griffith was not fully evil until he made that choice, and was on the fence internally.

I watched the original anime back in the day and enjoyed it alright. I was kinda offput by the awkward CG of the newer one, but your Guts video got me to get some of the manga and it has got me hooked. It'll prolly be a while before I can afford to get caught up to current, but god damn. I know the characters are deep, and the story is great, but your character profiles are like adverts in of them selves. Really well done.

Ok, i just finished my first read through of berserk, and here's what i think of grifith In the black swordsman arc, puck said to that lord who turned into a demon these words : "You put aside your humanity to scape your weaknesses; but scaping something you can't confront means you're weak; in the end, you are still, a weak human" That was the perfect setup to the golden age arc So, hear me out; grifith is the perfect counter part for guts; guts is constantly trying to maintain his humanity, not turning into the beast (wich is beautifully shown through the berserker armor); where as grifith is embracing the flaud human being he is This sounds crazy but bare with me for a moment; grifith is a selfish human being that sees no end, he isn't the "ends justify the means" kind of guy, because he doesn't have an "end" As said multiple times through out the series, the hawk is always setting his sight higher and higher, flying to reach a seemingly endless goal Grifith is the same (wich, mind you, is brilliant writing in my eyes). He is a selfish human who only wants to get higher, and he embraces that part of himself; he knows he's a flaud being and he doesn't run from it; he sacrifices everything to reach his goal and it's totally in character for him That's why he balances guts out so perfectly A human that tries to remain human, not give into the dark desires of a human being; and a selfish human being who only wants to go higher without a goal in sight, a man who does everything he can to get higher and has given into his flaud desires as a human being I know this sounds really crazy, but this is what i got from my first read through of the series

I think I figured out with over 90% of confidence what Griffith's going to do now. All the pieces fit together and I'm already pissed off at him. Let's just say that it's quite heartwarming to see him bonding with the new Band of the Hawk. Also, he wasn't a complete monster before the Eclipse, and now there's still like 0.001% of Humanity in him, just like how the Count legit loved his daughter even in Apostle form.

Who else got a bit lost when nux was making some of his points? I really enjoy his analysis videos but I just feel as though he doesn't elaborate on his points well enough, at times losing focus on the points made. Berserk is a manga - a world, of such incomprehensible magnitude and so there's so much to explore and discuss, as a result there is a lot more that could be delved into; specific characters, events or the state of the world. Although some of the community can exaggerate certain aspects of the story such as, "Griffith is such a morally ambiguous character" - which he isn't, I feel as though those points do have merit as the real nuance of Griffith lies in his rather inconsistent psychology. With that being said nux the most sarcastic KZreadr, love the videos and I would love to see an update on the Guts and Griffith analysis, based on recent events in the manga, as well as a Casca analysis. (Why do I sound like an English teacher setting homework 😅🙄) ^you can die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain😂^
