The Deep Water Man (1983) by Sheila Hodgson

First of all, I have to confess that while almost all of the plays to which I have access came from my own recordings, a certain number have been acquired over the years from a variety of sources, courtesy of other people who were decent enough to share their own off-air recordings. This recording of The Deep Water Man is one such example - and the decent thing would be to acknowledge where I acquired it. However, I never bothered to keep a record of where I was getting these plays so I must simply say - if you're the person who made this off-air recording and first shared it: thank you.
On a general note, the sound quality of this recording is a bit lower than usual - but it's taken from an analogue recording made in 1983, so you can't expect contemporary digital quality from it..
As to the story, it's more mystery than anything supernatural - though the idea of a small community that doesn't want to talk about certain sensitive subjects is certainly one familiar from the horror genre. It's also 'consistent' with the channel's theme on account of being the work of Sheila Hodgson, whose adaptations of Algernoon Blackwood, and pastiches of M.R. James, can also be found on this channel.
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn

It’s well acted. I like Hodgson, the 5-8 I’ve heard, I’d say she’s in the upper half of mediocre. Despite being too obvious far too early, her style, atmosphere & characters keep you interested till the end, w/o feeling cheated. Thanks
