"It's up for grabs nooooow!" those iconic words will always live long in the memory of English football.
In the midst of the ecstasy of just winning the league in the last minute and Graham still trying to show respect and move the celebrations away from the Liverpool bench is pretty classy 40:58
Jeez, how cool was Thomas putting that chance away under unbelievable pressure.
"First side to win by 2 goals at Anfield since 1986" That is insane. A definition of a fortress, makes the win even more impressive than it already is.
As a Gooner, a game that I will never forget. The whole street rocked that night. But I have another reason, mum had been unwell for a couple of weeks and was still upstairs in bed. I took a cup of tea and toast up at half-time and watched the second half with mum. What a second half, and at the end, we were screaming and had a big old hug. Mum passed away a few weeks later. R.I.P. MUM.
Thank you Arsenal! For us Evertonians old enough to remember this game it will always have a special place in our hearts.

Probably the most dramatic moment in English football history. I want to know why Bobby Robson didn’t select more Arsenal players for the World Cup back then. Adams, Smith and Rocastle at least deserved it
@robinmcewen3286
4 жыл бұрын
Because he had Butcher, Lineker, Robson and so on who were infinitely better players. Adams missed out on Italia 90 through injury I think. But the others were nowhere near the England quad then. It's funny how fans demand big-club players when they don't get picked. then demand form players from smaller clubs when big-club players get the nod. arsenal were a top team then. But apart from Adams, I don't think there was a case for another player to be included in the England squad. rocastle was brilliant, but perhaps he was already suffering from the condition that would take his life too soon. George Graham was Arsene Wenger x 10. Disgrace how they treated him

BT just spent £1.3bn for the next 3 seasons. Shiter if you're Scottish now we have to have Sky, Premier and BT
As a Gooner it was a great night for us. Going to Anfield to win by two goals or more. Liverpool weren't meant to be intimidating but the Gunners showed weren't scared and we got the two goals we needed. What a night.
Just had a look at the rest of league on Wikipedia. Pretty much unrecognisable in 2020: 3rd N. Forest, 4th Norwich, 5th Derby, 6th Spurs, 7th Coventry, 8th Everton, 9th QPR, 10th Millwall, 11th Man. U., 12th Wimbledon, 13th Southampton, 14th Charlton, 15th Sheff. W., 16th Luton, 17th Villa, 18th Middlesbrough, 19th West Ham, 20th Newcastle.
The most striking thing about this was the behaviour of George Graham. Pure class. He tried to keep the euphoria to a minimum - clearly conscious of the circumstances. Also, respect for his fellow Scot. Class act. Sure, fell foul of the money trap. but so what? Who didn't back then? Treated disgracefully and discarded like a rag doll. Graham was twice the manager Wenger was. Liverpool fans were pure class too. Not a boo to be heard. Tbf, Arsenal aren't a big LFC rival and the flowers gesture at the start was possibly part of it. But LFC fans, in my experience, are the most knowledgable football fans I've ever met. they were magnanimous that night and they deserve enormous credit.
Thomas ... it's up for grabs now ... Thomas! ... best ever ... the memory brought a happy tear to my eye.
Unusually, this was also shown live in Scotland. A rare treat back in those days!

My late Grandad was a massive Arsenal supporter and use to force me to watch this on VHS every time I went round there as a kid! I have no affiliation with Arsenal at all (Watford fan), but this ending was incredible and eclipses the Aguero moment for me. Don't get me wrong, that was ridiculous, but I feel this moment was the best ever climax to a season. The daunting task of not only having to go to Anfield, but to win by TWO clear goals just couldn't be achieved....or so everyone thought! Amazing.
Liverpool at this time were the masters! I've seen great finales in my time Manu and the treble Liverpool 2005 But to me this was the BEST Liverpool made the mistake of sitting back at 0-1 as they could still win the league. BUT..........

Very tough season as a Liverpool fan with the Hillsborough disaster 🙏🏽 RIP 96
I'm a Liverpool fan, and I was evelen years old in 1989. And me, my older brother and my man utd fan uncle still remember this like it was yesterday. We were watching this together in my home in London. Arsenal had to win 2-0 at anfield to win the championship on goal difference...Nobody gave arsenal any hope. But i must confess that the FA cup final defeat against Wimbledon the season before was actually still in the back of my mind. Something had to happen in the second half. Smith then of course scored. And that's when me and older brother were beginning to s*** our selves if you like.. Coming into storage time.. me and my older brother thought we've got this.... Then...... 😭... Michael Thomas scored with virtually the last kick off the season... Me and my older brother were stunned. Fergie always said that he wanted to knock us off our perch. But i think that even though we were to win back the championship the following season. That was our last championship win. I actually do think that it was this tragic season and this game that knocked us off our perch. We have never really the same since. I must admit that I hated arsenal for a long time because of this.. 😂... But what i didnt remember was that they threw bunches of flowers into the kop as a mark of respect for the victims of the hillsborough disaster.. So kudos to the arsenal players and fans for that... Since the creation of the FA premier league. We haven't been good enough. Until now of course. This season will be ours, and the championship will come home...ynwa

I'm not an Arsenal fan, I really don't like them at all, but like most of the UK on that night, because of who you were playing, I watched the game with pals who supported Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, United, and Scum praying for an upset. Everyone of us was celebrating afterwards, as if it was our team that had won. It's without doubt the greatest finish to any top class English season. A. Because it was the closest of all time and involved the top 2. and B. Because the whole country celebrated as one, because in that era we were all sick to death of the boring pass back to the goalkeeper Liverpool tactics and the arrogance of Liverpool supporters! 🤣🤣

As a Liverpool Fan King Kenny was totally responsible for the defeat as he had the team play a cagey defensive game. Had they gone into that game needing to win 2-0 they almost certainly would have done it.

After "Hillsborough"...no one gave us a chance, like it was written in the stars for Liverpool...the Afc team handing out flowers at the start was a sign...and the Liverpool players lack of grace in defeat was the icing on the cake...
