THE DEBRIEF: Tobin Heath Debriefs USWNT vs. Korea Republic (aka The Beginning of the Emma Hayes Era)

Спорт

This is the Debrief.
One soccer game, each week.
Debriefed by USWNT legend and 2x World Cup Champion Tobin Heath.
This week's match: International Friendly USWNT vs. Korea Republic
The Emma Hayes Era officially begins!
-
"The Debrief is a concept that comes from the U.S. Women’s National Team.
A sports psychologist came in before the 2019 World Cup to figure out the marginal gains - what could we do that no other team was going to do to win that World Cup?
We’d go on the field for 90-plus minutes. And no matter what happened - win, lose, or tie - we’d come back to the locker room, sit down, and debrief.
What did that look like? Everybody just getting out all of their energy on the past game. Their feelings. Their emotions. Holding each other accountable. Whether it was the good, bad, or ugly it was a time to expel all of our feeling about the game. And then we’d wipe our hands and say ‘onto the next game.’
Doing it collectively as a team was a game changer. It completely unlocked our ability to move through tournaments in a positive way.
So we took this concept and put it into this show. I’m going to watch one game every week, and then I’m going to just expel all of my feelings about the game and together we’ll Debrief.”
- Tobin

Seam 2 is the left half space. A lot of coaches divide the field vertically into 5 lanes, so the widest space on the left is 1, the middle left area is 2, the center is 3, etc.

So true! As a big fan of the USWNT, it's crazy to me how many cringe statements there are in the press about how awesome the US players are. I know huge positivity is a core part of US culture, but come on, all you have to do is *really* watch the best players from other countries at big international tournaments or Champions League clubs to see that many of the USWNT players are not better than the best of Spain, France, etc. It's really getting to be a problem when US players only hear how awesome they are - it's so easy to just show up and think that you're working hard, and then get crushed against teams that actually work hard, know how to practice technique, are disciplined, etc. Thank goodness Emma is here with some real perspective on what it will take to win.

@@HughHoit’s not necessarily the players aren’t good or that people only give them praises. Mostly fans of the team know the players are fantastic and you don’t get call up to the USWNT if you aren’t good enough. The issue is we haven’t seen the best of the entire team. Spain, France etc have been playin and coached well for some time now. They have a cohesive unit, and a tactical approach that best suits their players. USWNT did not and was under a heavily regimented unit with Vlatko. During that time a lot of new players who came in only got to learn his way which stagnated their growth. Now those players are having to relearn and adapt to a new way of doing things. It doesn’t mean they’re not good or better than those other nations players. The NWSL is still the best league, and competition is high, it’s just the old USWNT players like Tobin Heath and Press grew up in a different system from what they saw in Vlatko and that is what they’ve been trying to tell us and now Emma is task with rebuilding that quintessential USWNT DNA. If the US does what she is asking they’ll come right back to being the strong and dominant side and will be right there. Other than Spain and France and a lesser degree England no one else in the top 10 can really go after this team coached by Hayes. In the last game of the World Cup, the US outplayed Sweden on the pitch, game went to penalties and Sweden won but that game give me hope that it wasn’t a player issue this was a tactical coaching issue.

The US team already looked like they were playing more together rather than looking like 11 individuals out on the pitch not actually playing together. Loved seeing Crystal Dunn back where she belongs as an offense player which is where she started her career. The understanding is there from Fox, Horan, Macario of what Hayes is wanting based on their club experience in the UK and Europe.

Wish she got an opportunity to use her weapon, the throw in, when they were on the offensive side. Totally agree, Tobin, she should be highly considered for the Olympic roster. I think Emma's biggest strength is understanding how to break her opponents down. She's notorious for developing 10s to their own unique playmaking strengths and then deploying the proper 10 for each opponent while being able to play the other 10s as wingers or 9s so they can shift the attack style without having to sub. Look at Chelsea with Reiten, James, Kirby, Macario, back in the day Ji and more I'm forgettingI All of these players can play the 10 and are put there based on the style needed to win that specific game. It also feels like the rest of the team understand their roles and how those roles differ based on who else is on the field and dictating play. (again going off Chelsea since we only have 1 USWNT game to pull data from)

Contrasting Emma’s press conferences (1st one here and at Chelsea previously) to Berhalter’s tells the story. It is not about her trying to be the smartest in the room. I never learn anything about the game from know-it-all Berhalter…..he can’t read the game and he badly reads how to deploy his players. One game in and the team already looks like a modern side in fundamental tactical structures. Asymmetric back 3/4 that can defend in a 4-4-2 in passive moments and attack in 3-4-3. Nighswonger and Rodman providing maximum width while creating overloads with Mallory able to come inside and construct a box with Catarina, Horan, and Coffey. It really was far more enjoyable to watch than the World Cup team. One question I would like to ask Emma is how much the tactical structure are informed by the player profiles vs the selections being informed by the tactics she wants to play, because it seemed very natural for the players chosen and simultaneously very much how top club teams look to play now which is rare to implement at the national level.

Interesting thought in whether it is a mixture ofselecting for existing player profiles or Hayes' tactical vision guiding her selection. I tend to think that we are going to see a shift in the international game towards the dynamic play style of top club teams, especially with the dominance of Spain, which in my personal opinion has benefitted massively from leveraging Barcelona's tactical set-up. I'm incredibly excited the see how a club coach can shape an international team pro-actively in this way.

She started doing this months before she showed up, talking about the lack of creativity. Then when she first appeared here she was clear that she thought the US was behind the top teams, there was a "gap". At the same time she praises many individual players, and has the knowledge of the game to back up everything she says.

I think that the goal-keeping trainer needs to re-assess the type of gloves that are being used; the ricochet Thick gloves are still being used and in my opinion they are not good to use. Those came out back in 2015, and they forced goal-keepers to go out and Fist the ball clear instead of Catching the ball; that brings to mind Hope Solo. I did a lot of goal-keeping in my teens and I always choose a thinner pair of gloves, you can actually grab the ball using those. For example, Christiane Endler uses a thinner type of glove and is one of the best if not the best. South Corea was not a clear challenge and the next game will be much of the same, but it's a fact that the USWNT team is undergoing a reconstruction and the players are still adjusting to one another. I still can see a lack of control, confidence and creativity in the Midfield unit, the team that controls the midfield controls the game; when the team was under Mr. Andonovski he had the same problem, a lack of cohesiveness in Midfield and he wasn't able to fix it. I hope that Ms. Hayes picks up on that and gets to the task because Lindsey Horan's ability and soccer IQ. can not do it alone. Note: Ms. Heath, try to phonetically pronounce the word Era: Eeera, and thank your Debriefing of this game.

We have always had the AMAZING Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly on the width, and tick tock, tick tock, like clockwork along comes Ellen White our PHENOMENAL goal machine, as well as Tooney and Lessi and Georgia. But! With Ellen White retiring we no longer have that ‘3’ you talk about. James was supposed to fill the gap but she hasn’t shown up yet, and now we have 5 individuals trying to score goals instead of that tight-knot 3some (wings and Ellen) and others joining in, iyswim? As for the gays? Holy cr*p, that must be it?? I do believe we only have Lauren Hemp as our out and out gay rep?? And for years Alex Greenwood filled the left back or Centre back position flawlessly, but Sarina Weigman doesn’t like her, it seems! So we have any number of really good replacements but not THAT player who can make our defending seamless. If we can get through the hardest Euro Group EVER (don’t start me on FiFa changing the rules which previously - as European Champions and World Cup Finalists - England would have walked into both the Olympics and next Euros 😡), which frankly doesn’t now look probable, AND get Lauren James integrated into the Lionesses and playing her spellbinding best, we’ll be good to go re defending and Winning the Euros next Summer , but… …that was the long answer, sorry 😂. The short answer is we’ll be lucky - with no striker or defender I can think of who is as good as Ellen White and Alex Greenwood - to be back on track by the next World Cup, sigh.

@@krisjohnson-proctor355 thank you for such a detailed answer. i've already copied your reply into my cheat sheet for study of the game --- it will come in handy. I hear your pain ---- Ellen White was very special imho. I always root for England - special relationship and all 🙂 --- so I wish you the emergence of those talents you need. for Team GB [so sorry for the travesty of the Olympic qualiying] yep - see you in WC.

@@kevinkanter2537 Thank you! I admit i’m too nervous to watch the France v England match..tho of course i’ll have it on (whilst doing some pointless cleaning in the kitchen!) just in case we’re 3-0 up (I can dream) and it’s suddenly safe to sit and watch it! Strangely enough, with England out of the Olympics i’m really looking forward to a stress-free watch if it. Like most English fans i’ll be cheering Emma and the US on, but will be intrigued to see how all-dominant Spain, and the Aussies do. Will be a fantastic tournament, i think. 🙏

@@krisjohnson-proctor355 funny - cleaning while stressing. btw, i sometimes just record the game and peek @ the final score before looking at the tape --- I'm a wuss at times; no courage of a lion here (much less of a Lioness ... 🙂). I am looking forward to the individual performances and the input from the friendlies leading up to the Olympics. US seems very deep, unlike the WC team ... but, no excuses --- moving on.

The sound effects in these videos are unnecessary and distracting. Tobin doesn’t need them. Don’t dilute what she says with dumb effects.

I agree, I'll second that. Also, I'm a huge fan of Tobin and Christen.. they of course can believe, make or sell whatever they want, however as someone who grew up and still has to deal with a ton of homophobia and sexism I find it really hard to swallow seeing a "God loves gays" shirt.. That is just so out of touch with reality and it makes me feel sad that they are trying to in any way to make any organized religion seem less harmful or hateful than it actually is.
