The Death of the US Dollar?

There has been an online explosion of discourse surrounding several currency agreements signed by nations like Russia, China and India, with some even predicting the emergence of a gold-backed BRICS currency to rival the US dollar but the end of the year. Is this actually possible though, and how likely are these five countries who have wildly different levels of interest, savings and inflation, to work together in the long term, or is this just Russia and China making political noise whilst still clinging to the stability of the US Dollar? Are we experiencing the beginning of "The Death of the US Dollar?", or a masterclass on why it has maintained its primary position for so many decades now? We ask our panel of experts:
On the panel this week:
- Vicky Pryce (CEB)
- Maximilian Hess (FPRI)
- Anders Åslund (Swedish Economist)

How is this clickbait? It's a question, an announcement of the topic (a very precise one at that), one that's been discussed often recently, so we all know the general outline and background (if we follow geopolitics at all). Plus, the content is of such high quality that I wouldn't even mind actual clickbait.

@@LVArturswhat he meant to say was, "I am a douchebag and this is a drive by trolling, just ignore it, I get paid by the post." Pretty sure that is accurate.

I can remember conspiritard videos back in 2011 that had the same title. They had nothing to offer other than imaginary scenarios and fear-mongering. Then they tried to get you to invest in gold.

Dedollarization will happen, but it will not happen overnight. the issue is the primary use for dollar is not in trading of goods, it is in servicing of debt. the total debt held in USD is 260 trillion dollars. so even if BRICS print 10 trillion dollar a year, it would take them 26 years just to replace existing USD denominated debt. this will happen, it just that it is a long and slow process.

Wouldn't that cause inflation for BRICS? I guess they'll be waiting for over a century to get their chance, but even then they're nations that have their currency used everywhere and last for half a thousand years so I don't think we'll see the US dollar go anywhere in our lifetime or our grandchildren's. But maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Wait - you can't just print your way to prosperity and a new currency. That leads to runaway inflation and a host of its own problems. The whole basis to begin with for dollarization is that at one time, maybe even still to a degree, the dollar was stable and had the backing to prove it. The backing is not there now. But no one is able to provide an alternative, at least a stable alternative, to supplant the dollar.

Great stream as always. I appreciate your level headed approach to the news and the marketes. A lot has changed and that implies to everything but the truth is I don't even care about the bull or bear markets anymore because Arthur Kade Fraser has provided me with cover while I'm comfortable with 1.7btc
