The Death of Creative Midfielders

Спорт

Creative attacking midfielders, also known at the number 10 role, were once considered the most coveted position in football. The likes of Mesut Ozil at Real Madrid, Juan Mata at Chelsea, Kaka, Zidane and many more being rated as some of the most valuable and influential players in the world. Now, the position is dying out.. why is this?

In this video, I discuss the tactical evolution in football away from the popular 4-2-3-1 formation, towards the most popular 4-3-3 shape that the best teams adopt in modern day football, along with which players have adapted well (Kevin De Bruyne) and which haven't (Mesut Ozil).

I can also see Ancelotti being one of the few modern managers to adopt the 4-2-3-1 shape (which includes the number 10) as he generally doesn't instil the Pep/Klopp/Poch style of play into his teams. Its 2022 and the 10 is slowly going to come back, but has to be mobile and energetic enough to constantly switch throughout the game from central to wide areas as formations change in and out of possession and in different stages of possession. Liverpool signing players like Nunez and Carvalho, the wingers slowly hugging the lines more and more and cutting in as needed.

Quick question, I still don't understand the difference between a 433 using a false 9 and a 442 diamond using a 10?? Regardless of where they start, in the end, the false 9 is going to drop to the midfield to get the ball and his job will be either to attack the goal himself or pass to the two other forwards to set up a goal. So he gets the ball in midfield, plays behind the forwards, and his job is to create. Sounds like a CAM to me. I used to think that a false 9 needs to also be a prolific goal scorer when he runs into the box like Messi, but Firmino or Benzema during BBC don't score a lot either, so that can't be it.

I grew my admiration of midfielders since they can do a lot of things like attack, defend, shooting and passing. But personally, I admire CAMs more due to their impressive ball control, passing and shooting The pure 4-3-3 made the midfielders at the center of the pitch. I mostly play PES Club Manager than PES 2020 Mobile, but one of my favorite things to do is to make different variants, as long as it's Total Football. My 4-3-3 variant is where one midfielder can go deeper and the other two can go for the attack, perhaps close to 4-1-2-3. Cruyff's 3-4-3 Diamond formation is my most favorite and my most used formation since I can use one CAM while the other 3 midfielders have a balance of attacking and defending. To me, CAMs need more love.

Also, you're absolutely correct to say that the 4-3-3 formation was around at the time. The point of the video is to highlight how most - not all - big teams have switched from the 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 and this has killed the number 10 role in most - again, not all - teams.
