The Deadly Traps of the Vietnam War | Good Enough | History Teacher Reacts
The Vietnam War saw some of the most successful guerilla warfare in modern history. Nearly 1/3 of American casualties came from Vietnamese traps. What were these traps? How did the work? How horrifying were they? Good Enough explains while Mr. Terry reacts and talks about the history of warfare.

People wonder how the US was willing to do so much damage to Vietnamese terrain from the air; it's stuff like this. Who would want to navigate a jungle filled with horrific traps when it can be blasted and burned away instead? I knew Vietnam was a nightmare experience for many soldiers but I didn't know all the details. No wonder so many came back screwed up.
Early in the Vietnam conflict some deaths were hard to explain. Soldiers sometimes died of what was thought as heart attacks. They later found out soldiers were dying from being snake bitten from various traps including snakes being nailed on trees soldiers would randomly lean against. The traps in Vietnam were next level.
I've heard from Polenar Tactical channel (this lad is from Slovenia), that this mason jar grenade was in fact invented during Yugolav wars, where standard frag grenade fuse (3-4s) was switched to smoke grenade fuse (instant) and instead of a jar the grenade would be put into a glass. Then it'd be placed on top of slightly ajar doors or tied to stuff, so that when opening the door or pulling something it would cause the glass to fall, shatter and let loose the safety lever. That made it a VERY frightening booby trap.
It's teacher appreciation week! Many hugs to a great teacher! I’m always happy to see your videos Mr. Terry! :)
I can answer how the tunnel-clearers (called tunnel rats) were chosen. It wasn't drawing straws; it was short stature and slenderness. The Vietnamese made their tunnels too small for an average white or black man to fit through, so the unlucky Joe Pesci-sized guys were assigned the horrible job of crawling into them with a gun and a prayer. My cousin was one of them and came back completely messed up. _edited: annnnd this is why it pays to watch the whole video before commenting because literally seconds after I paused it he explained exactly what I posted 🙄_
Okay, most of these were scary/terrible, but throwing in 16:32? That was hilarious and caught me totally off-guard. Well done!
I remember something about the history of Vietnamese traps. There’s a really old book that cataloged the traps they first used against the Mongols. It even had a trap to protect against naval landings. The book is now on display in Hanoi.
My 10th grade history teacher Mr. Sheffler was a Nam vet, and one of his war stories was about all the traps they were warned about, including baby baskets with LIVE BABIES in them because the VC knew that most wouldn't want to abandon a baby.

@@user-gw4kl8ft9u no, these were real. They used them in Afghanistan as well
Hey Mr Terry can you watch the kaiserreich documentary series(alternate history) from Kaiser Cat Cinema as it is incredible at least in my opinion.
The rubber band grenade and the glass grenade are scary effective even now.
Grenades do NOT throw anything 35 meters. The blast radius of a fragmentation grenade is 6 meters.
The Vietnamese apparently had an ancient manuscript detailing this kind of warfare that they used to against invaders throughout history. I haven't had any luck on finding any sources on this, tho.
Happy teacher appreciation week my dude, you got some lucky and (Im assuming) well-educated students
i dont know how many of these traps where made but i bet some are still out there today
I know a former tunnel rat and it was one of the most dangerous jobs. Death percentage rates in the 80's.
I would love to see your reaction to the Tunnel Rats of Vietnam. There are plenty of good videos on the subject from Infographics and others. There is also the movie "1968 Tunnel Rats (2008)"
I would absolutely hate being a tunnel rat, not only am I claustrophobic.... but i wouldn't have been chosen for that as I'm 193cm 6'4" tall. So i guess the trade off is never having to go into the tunnels, but presenting a larger target above ground. Lol
Why does this dude intonate his sentences like the "Burger King foot lettuce" dude?
In addition to beating a bunch of powerful empires, Vietnam also invaded Cambodia and ended the Khamer Rouge.

They ended the government but then got bog down for over a decade, which resulted in a pyyric victory
i love your videos
Rambo, Da Five Bloods, and other Vietnam related movies depicted the horror of these traps perfectly
I was visiting Vietnam and took a boat tour of the Perfume River. We stopped at a beach to see a temple but I walked up the river a bit and climbed up the bank to see a nearby field. There were hundreds of sticks sticking out of the ground all around the field. I shrugged and went back to the boat and asked the tour guide about it. He casually said "oh, those are land mine markers." GULP.
I mean, most of these are hunters stable, human is just another animal :). There was a tale of a tribal hunter killed about 300-400 soldiers just by trap and cross-bow. Never pick up gun and gernade since he belive the smell of gunpowder give him away. BTW if you want to know how deadly a cross bow is. m14 rifle can penetrate about 1/2 of a termite's nest, a good bamboo cross-bow can go all the way to the back and then 1/3 of another one. Bamboo is a miracle material, anti rot, anti bug, supper elastic and very easy to grows, since they are essentially grass. Also fun fact, Bamboo is the main weapon of Gióng (Saint? Demi God? God?), kinda like Hercules that repelled the North (China) after his metal weapon failed.
😂 LOL demented Dr. Seuss.
I really can't stand KZreadrs that use that cadence or whatever you call it. Not Mr. Terry. He sounds like a normal dude.
As a writer I am taking notes on this
They shopped at Acme?
Good 'ol punji sticks, can't be beat
3:35 Maybe the Afghani's? It is named the "graveyard of empires" for a reason
When you are fighting on your homeland it's a lot easier to defend.
My uncle fought in Vietnam. He would wake up screaming at night
Did we ever just pump millions of gallons of water into those tunnels?
@user-qv1gc1vn7o

it will lead out to clean their toilet apparently, the soil absorbed water very well, i mean the tunnel is not a flat scale, in 3D printing it has some stiff slope that water probably go that way, hence why the tunnel can withstand heavy rain yearly
Can you tell me doctor, why I still can't get to sleep? Night time's just a jungle dark and a barking M16. And what's this rash that comes and goes? Can you tell me what it means? God help me. I was only 19
When I was in the Army in the 80s, most of the senior NCOs were Vietnam veterans, and they taught us all kinds of fun things. The easiest was the forerunner of the Mason jar trap, but you used a C-Ration can opened at the bottom, inserted the grenade half-way, pulled the pin and placed it on the ground, bottom first with a couple of wrappers or the tiny roll of "John Wayne*" toilet paper. This made it look like the area had been quickly evactuated and the can forgotten in haste. Bad juju for any commie that picked up the can thinking it was free eats. *The toilet paper was so called because it was rough, tough, and didn't take sh-t off anyone.
Vietnam is the goat 🐐. They consistently kick the sh*t out of invaders and still in the end be like "it's alright, no hard feelings, wanna trade some goods fairly now?"
We did win the Vietnam war, considering we made Vietnam sign a peace treaty with the south
